    Holiday Cottages in Derbyshire

Derbyshire is one of the most beautiful parts the UK, boasting some incredible scenery, notably the Peak District. It's also home to some picturesque towns and villages such as Bakewell and Chesterfield, and has a long heritage and charming character all of its own. If you're looking for accommodation that breaks the mould then you'll find lots of great holiday cottages in Derbyshire, from tasteful and spacious lodges to quaint little stone dwellings that are perfect for romantic escapes.

Holiday cottages in Derbyshire are a great choice if you're looking for something more than your average getaway. The county is packed with charming, unique, and characterful properties, making holiday cottages in Derbyshire special. If you're looking for something larger for a group or family trip then there is plenty of choice. If you if you need a pet friendly option for you and your pampered pooch you're bound to find what you're looking for in Derbyshire.

Things to do on a Derbyshire cottage holiday

Predominantly a rural region, Derbyshire encompasses a large part of the Peak District, a stunning National Park that's characterised by rugged uplands and moorland, such as Kinder Scout. The area feels very remote and is the ideal spot for an adventure. There are lots of ways to explore the Peak District hiking, cycling and even on horseback. Stay in one of many pet-friendly holiday cottages in Derbyshire and your favourite friend can even come along with you.

Scattered throughout Derbyshire's rolling hills, you'll find lots of historic and picturesque towns and villages. Bakewell, for instance, is considered to be one of the finest towns in England and, yes, it is the birthplace of the Bakewell tart! If you're looking for something livelier, the city of Derby lies along the river Derwent and is awash with museums, galleries, and a magnificent Gothic cathedral.

Derbyshire is less touristy than somewhere like Cornwall or the nearby Lake District. But it's definitely worth exploring if you want a holiday to remember. The sheer number and quality of holiday cottages in Derbyshire makes this pretty part of the UK ideal for unforgettable family trips or romantic getaways.

Encompassing swathes of the Peak District, Derbyshire is a top place to stay. With luxury cottages on offer you can enjoy your next staycation in style. Whether it's as a romantic retreat or a family getaway, there will be a place for you in this lovely county.

The Peak District is, of course, a popular place to go in this county. With plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling, as well as stunning views; it's easy to see why. However, this isn't the only attraction of Derbyshire. Both in and out of the National park there are numerous pretty towns and villages in which to enjoy a luxury cottage holiday. It's just the place to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ian - Verified booking

The cottage had a well equipped kitchen including boiling water tap (although a kettle was also provided) and a very good shower room.

Parking was just outside the cottage in their gated courtyard, which is situated near the owner’s farmhouse. The settee was very comfortable and I also enjoyed sitting in the “rocking chair”! No mobile signal but the Wi-Fi was good. Much enjoyed the rural view, seeing the cows being moved daily to the top field. The cottage was well placed for sightseeing and would be good for cycling or walking,. We went on the Peak Rail steam train trip from Rowsley to Matlock, on a wet day, and enjoyed Matlock Bath, Ashbourne, Ilam Park, Dovedale, and Bakewell. The relatively nearby pretty village of Winster was a daily visit, for newspapers, local bread, butter, milk and groceries (local shop and Post Office). Sainsbury’s (with petrol station) and other shops could be found at Matlock. The garden was small but very secure for our two small dogs, with a small lawn and paved patio with garden seats - and an outside light for nighttime “visits”. As I was on crutches I did find the steps were quite steep to the garden, with no handrail, but I did manage, with care, and this was of course mentioned in the property description. A very handy porch/boot room to the front of the property was convenient to dry off the dogs and to leave our wet coats, shoes, etc! There was also a washing machine, if required, and a very handy mop! We enjoyed our visit to the cottage and would recommend.

The photos on the website don't do this gorgeous cottage justice.

It is immaculate inside and out (and bigger than we expected) with a brilliantly stocked kitchen with everything you could need, (other than a dishwasher but hey, my husband is my dishwasher so not an issue for me!). The thing I was really happy with was the amount of cupboard space, as often in self catered cottages there is nowhere to put your food as the cupboards are full of cockery! The host was very welcoming and left a gorgeous welcome pack of a Chatsworth Cream tea in a box, chocolate muffins and pikelets from Chatsworth. He sent a lovely email before we arrived to check if we had any questions, to let us know about the opening situation of the local pubs and the closure of one of the village roads. Just lovely! The sofa and lounge furniture was comfortable, as were the beds. There were plenty of extra blankets (not that we needed them). The location is lovely and quiet and the neighbours were really friendly and went out of their way to have a chat and offer recommendations of things to do. The village was brilliantly located for visiting a range of different attractions but also the walks from the door were spectacular. One of the very best Sykes properties we've stayed in. If I had to be picky the only thing I'd change would be the addition of thicker curtains or a blackout blind in the back bedroom. We had to improvise by hanging a blanket over the curtain rail.

On arrival at the location no obvious sign of Clover Cottage.

Contacted owner via an Intercom system attached to farmhouse door. Owner apologised for non appearance said she would be home as soon as possible. Tried to describe where entrance to cottage was but signal kept breaking up and could not understand what she was saying. Spoke to a lady in the adjoining cheese factory who said she had never heard of Clover Cottage. Eventually found another person at cheese factory who directed me to the property. The entrance was off the farmyard but was not obvious that it was like photos on booking site. Entrance via a very unimpressive leanto to the back door. This led into a small kitchen with no window and then into the living room which was minimally furnished. The bathroom was off this room and was the best room in house with large walk-in shower, wash basin and toilet. The two bedrooms were uninspiring with large heavy furniture, one looking out to garden. The photos on the booking site gave the impression of a much more cosy and comfortable property which it was not. The cottage was described on the web site as "a stunning two bed roomed cottage" Not in my opinion. This short break was to give my wife a bit of a ' pick me up' after a recent stroke but because of what we found as described above we felt that we could not stay and we drove home.

Unfortunately we do not recommend a stay at Appletree Cottage.

The main reason for this is the beds. The double bed has a foam mattress. Only this is so sturdy that it literally feels like you're lying on a board. We therefore moved to the other bedroom halfway through the first night. However, the mattresses in this room are not much better. High in the middle because of the springs, only a few centimeters thick on the sides. So every time you turn over you practically roll out of bed. As a result, you don't really get a good night's sleep. The cottage itself has been refurbished and decorated with much love and attention. Yet you notice that the owner himself has never camped there for a week, because there are quite a few points that could be improved. • There is a smart TV in the living room, but it will not connect to the WiFi in any way. So watching Netflix is not an option. • The central heating is off in the summer. But that also means that the towel rail in the bathroom is off, so towels don't dry and you have to dry off with wet towels. • There are not enough plates, so you actually have to run the dishwasher every day because you keep getting wrong, especially on plates. The cylinder of the front door is loose and the closing mechanism of the front door does not feel very reliable.
