What our customers say about their holidays

    • David - Verified booking

One of the most dog friendly cottages you will ever stay in, this is a sympathetic restoration of an important historic mill on the edge of the Tan y Bwlch estate.

The terraced gardens are secluded, well maintained, lovely and typical of the area with camellias starting to bloom in January, backing onto fields and woods. There is ample off road parking to the front of the cottage and we found it easy to get in and out although this road is the busy main road into Porthmadog. We weren't disturbed in the least by traffic noise, the stone walls of the cottage are very thick! We found the cottage warm and cosy with the log burner in action- wood was provided, and it lasted us all week. The night storage heaters kicked in effectively during the night so that the cottage was warm in the mornings. The bathroom is clearly newly refurbished and well equipped with a rain shower as well as a bath. The kitchen has everything you could want to make full meals including a microwave and a Nespresso machine with pods included. In fact, we have rarely experienced such generosity from a host who left us wine, condiments in the cupboard, Yorkshire teabags and treats for the dog. A soft dog bed next to the fire made our greyhound very happy. We were very comfortable in the large bedroom with its double iron bedstead and extensive wardrobes, and our daughter was similarly happy with her single bed in the smaller bedroom. Mill Cottage is a short walk away from the Oakeley Arms where the food is good and the bar is dog friendly, you can get straight into walks through deep woodland on the estate and catch a ride behind a steam engine on the narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway from Tan y Bwlch station up in the woods. Mill Cottage is clearly the owner's pride and joy and we would love to stay there again.

      What an absolutely fantastic property.

Cartref provided everything we were looking for, and more! It's beautifully designed & built, tastefully decorated, VERY well equipped (including kitchen utensils, games, books, local information leaflets, etc.) and extremely comfortable, with stunning views of the countryside from every window! You could simply sit there for hours and never get bored watching the changing weather coming in over the mountains. Also, the two calves resident in the field outside were an absolute delight to see each day. The owners couldn't have been more considerate, and were keen to ensure that we had everything we needed (having already provided us with a gorgeous welcome pack of biscuits, crisps, sweets, cookies, beer, G&T, and a range of tea bags!) On holiday with my partner's 93-year-old mother, it was reassuring to know that there weren't any stairs for her to climb, and the rooms are very spacious so no worries about bumping into furniture either. I needed to work during the day, so was very pleased with the wifi connection, particularly in such a remote area. I enjoyed the pool table in an evening too! The location is great for going out of the door to explore the local area, or for taking a short drive to local towns or even to the coast. I honestly think that this place would look spectacular in any/every season and hope to return to find out for myself!

This place is full of character with wood burners and provisions for using them in both lounge and kitchen.

This was a delightful place to stay. The facilities provided were excellent, kitchen very well kitted out, lounge very much a home from home, bedrooms spacious and a huge bathroom with more towels than we could ever use. The WIFI was much appreciated. Upon arrival we thought noise from the busy road may be a issue but once inside this turned out not to be the case and neither watching TV or sleeping were a problem. The location was ideal for us with good walking for our little dog very close by, Porthmadog 10 minutes drive down the road for supermarket shops and plenty of places for a day out close by. Despite more than our fair share of rain we did get one sunny evening to enjoy a glass of wine and the view from up the garden. Sadly our stay was cut short by a couple of days as the lounge end up 20mm deep in water after torrential over night rain. The response of both Sykes and the owner to the unfortunate event was swift and appreciated. We have been to this area of North Wales for the last 6 years and will be returning again, hopefully to Mill Cottage.

Absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean and decorated cottage with framed prints of local landscapes in each room.

Waking up to the fantantastic views made me feel like we were in another world. Our first evening at the cottage we sat in the garden taking in the view of the Moelwyn Mountains and enjoyed drinking the wine that was left chilled in the fridge for us (Thankyou Sarah). The neighbours and all the locals were friendly and knowledgeable of the area which was great. There are so many things to see and do locally, Portmeirion, Harlech Castle, shopping and lunch in Caenarfon. We were unsure what attractions would be open during our week, but there was plenty to do and we enjoyed our week as much as we would have done anytime. We highly recommend Moelwyn View Cottage and now that I have been to Snowdonia, I so much want to visit again , maybe with my sisters who I know would love it as much as I did. Such a lovely holiday that was so needed after a challenging few months.

The cottage was spotlessly clean, spacious and well-equipped; the views from the property were absolutely fabulous, and the location was ideal - isolated but close to plenty of activities.

Mountain biking a couple of miles down the road (brilliant, and for all levels - bring your own helmet!), Barmouth beach relatively close, and Harlech Castle and beach not far. And if you want walks, we did some easy walking from the cottage towards the Rhinogs, drove a couple of miles then walked up Rhinog Fawr (an effort, the top being visible from the cottage) and went towards Barmouth to walk the New Precipice Walk (amazing views). Local owner's, Mari and Rhys, came to say hello and were contactable during the stay with any questions, although the cottage contained all the practical information and things to do that you could possibly want. Such friendly and lovely hosts who made us feel really welcome...thank you! Nice welcome basket of treats too!! :) We had a wonderful holiday. Little surprise this cottage has such great reviews!
