What our customers say about their holidays

    • Christopher - Verified booking

We booked a week over Christmas with our dog.

Could only stay 3 days. Really nice area, in the mountains, secluded but close to everything you'll need for your stay. That's the good. Now for the bad. There really is no parking, so prepare for a pretty long walk from car to house. The actual location of the house is really really bad, and yes you have to cross a railway to enter the property. Luckily it wasn't running in the winter. Then theres the mud, puddles and rubbish that greeted us as we first arrived at the property. Generally the garden and outside areas have been left to rot and not been maintained. Also our springer spaniel did escape the garden, and the key safe is held together with tape. The inside on arrival was so cold no coats were removed for a very long time. Every room had its own electric radiator and all of them were turned on immediately. There is also a wood burner in the living room. But this is the biggest problem with the property. It's impossible to warm up the downstairs. Upstairs was lovely and toasty, but every room downstairs was constantly ice cold. We did receive a wood starter kit that burnt for maybe a hour before needing to buy more. Even with the log burner going it never warmed up to a comfortable level. The kitchen was dirty and didnt have anything to make food. Everything needs to be washed before use theres no enclosed drawers or cupboards so everything just sots in the open to collect dust and insects. Also there isnt really anything more than a few cups, cutlery and a few saucepans. So make sure you pack a few things. Barthroom was really nice, warmest room in the house and everything worked as it should. Although incredibly dangerous as the stairs go half way through the bathroom door. The bed also needs repairing or replacing. Theres a dip in the middle thats so large its noticeable with the naked eye. Its like sleeping in a hamuk. There is no wifi or tv which is stated and missed by ourselves at the time of booking. We did find a few games hidden away in a cupboard. Higly recommend burning them as they are mouldy and stink. Overall the property has so much potential but lacks the care and attention it deserves. If the owners tried to make it a home instead of an abandoned house i would highly recommend. I am writing this in the hope of positive changes not as a complaint.

I stay in the area every 2 months and I’m from this area with family going back generations!

I dislike giving negative reviews and only had 2 other stays out of over 30 + cottages here with average reviews otherwise I often return to most cottages. I feel I have to list things to make it clear to ensure they are addressed for future visitors without sounding petty. Very disappointing with lack of basic utensils such as no veg peeler, no whisk, no spatula, a side had broken off handle, broken bottle opener, 2 frying pans both burnt, some crockery a bit worn and especially dinner plates. Lack of oven proof dishes(only 1 large lasagna dish) nothing else! Other broken items - mirror taped up in bedroom, frustrating with kitchen bin lid broken. We have never stay anywhere where there is such a lack of ‘basic’ facilities and don’t expect too much in a starter pack for fire but this was very poor! One ‘hand towel’ for two persons for 7 days! Freezer iced up and really needed a proper clean and defrosting. Fridge very small inside and broken light so difficult to see dial as temperature very temperamental and no battery in torch when I tried to use it to cede fridge dial. Think the fridge is so old needs replacing. Damp smell everywhere evidence on skirtings some ceilings and base cupboards in kitchen showing black mould from damp inc plaster coming off walls by front hall etc. Not great for asthma sufferers like myself. This is not condensation this requires damp proofing as many old cottages do and have been damp proofed over the years. Cleanliness needs a bit of attention with dust in places and more so in bedside cabinets and lamps just felt a bit grubby in places. Finishing on a more positive note the shower pressure is great and good some rooms with cosy living room, furnished quite nicely in bedrooms, bed a bit small for a double. Parking we managed outside the house quite well. I regularly stay in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Llan Ffestiniog, Tanygrisiau and other areas close by, on the whole, Hen ty Capel is too disappointing to return too. Needs a little attention and added extras to make it worthy of a good review.

Cottage is bright and airy, cosy and charming in a rural location.

It had everything we needed for a comfortable, pleasant and restful stay. Owners are very personable and easy to deal with. Gaining access was straightforward. Parking is relatively convenient although there is a steep climb up a narrow path to the rear of the property, bear in mind when unpacking and loading the car on arrival and departure. The garden is private and the setting is altogether very peaceful. A couple of things to note, stairs are steep and narrow which caused me some anxiety. I navigated them slowly, sideways each time - there is a handrail, Hot water is plentiful, it is very hot so be careful. There is a selection of games, books and information which could do with a bit of a sort out and refresh as all a bit tatty and out of date. The cupboard itself was disorganised, dusty and cobweb strewn. On that note the vacuum was situated in the wardrobe in the bedroom which deterred me from hanging up my freshly laundered clothes. Whilst I could have moved it I did think it a little strange as the housekeeper’s cupboard was next to it, surely it could be stored there, out of the way. No disrespect, I love l a Henry. The local village is a low key affair and nearest hostelries are approximately a 10 min drive away. We were very content to cook, light a fire, read/chat or watch Netflix most evenings after a busy day out and about. I personally found having 5 remote controls too much, although thankfully James was on the end of the phone, promptly to assist. Perhaps a simple radio would be a welcome addition for those of us who find smart TVs a little too clever. Plenty to do and see in the surrounding area. We enjoyed our stay, it was relaxed, restorative and recommended.

My second time to this lovely, cosy and welcoming cottage.

No problems with booking, key and travel information and the cottage is exactly as advertised. It’s definitely not for anyone with mobility issues or young children as the path up to the cottage is fairly long and steep, as well as a narrow steep staircase up to the bedroom. The cottage had everything i needed except maybe a decent pair of scissors and knife sharpener (which of course are very minor), plenty of towels, blankets and comfy bedding and pillows and a really nice big bed with a lovely view! Make sure you bring some bird seed with you as there are loads of beautiful birds who visited! I had a Tesco delivery on the day I arrived which was crucial! The driver was amazing and brought everything up to the cottage so I didn’t have to lug it all up the path, so this is a must :) The only downside this year unfortunately was the house that sits opposite the track up to the cottage was having extensive building work done, therefore lots of noise from power saws, drills diggers and hammering. I know this is absolutely not the owners fault but this really impacted the peaceful position of the cottage, which was one of the reasons I chose it in the first place. There were also traffic lights which covered the end of the track which meant getting out was a bit hairy. As I said, not the owners fault but there you go. I have booked to come again next year as the cottage itself is just lovely, it’s in a perfect position for visiting Criccieth, Harlech, Porthmadog, Pwthelli and more! Definitely recommend Harlech beach if you have a dog, it’s massive and plenty of room for a good run with the pup! Hopefully the building work will be complete next year :)

      Negatives: 1.

No Fire Starter Pack ( not behind a door, not in the wicker basket not anywhere 2: No 1 Black Rubbish Bag To Be Seen Anywhere 3. Microwave Inside dirty big spats from tomatoes sauce and other sorts! 4. Not Clean, Kitchen Cutlery Tray Dirty You have to wash everything before use. Floors dirty. Under Wooden Bed Full Of Dust And Dog Hairs. It’s lovely to allow dogs but there needs to be vacuumed after stays. Also There Was (Probably Still Is, As I Read Another Review Mentioning This) A Dirty Tissue Next To The Bed, Under The (Also Dirty) Bedside Table. From A Previous Stay 5. Shower is really tricky We couldn’t get it nice and warm, and the minute you try to move the button to try to get it warmer it goes ice cold instead. 6. Front Of The Cottage Is Very Muddy It’s Very Tricky To Try To Get Passed It. It Could Do With A Proper Path (Slate In Abundance :). An A Pretty Gate Or Give It A Paint Positive Points: 1. Gorgeous Old Cottage, It Has So Much Potentia, The Cottage Oozes Character. I especially Loved The Upstairs Super Cosy, No Problem Falling Asleep After A Long Sight Seeing Day and Sitting By The Fire (Once We Got The Wood :)) With A Nice Glass Of Red 2. The Owner Is Busy Making A Patio Next To The Cottage, Which Will Be Lovely In Summertime To Sit And Sip A Glass Of Wine :) 3. The Steam Train Railway Right In Front. It Was Delightful To See The Steam Train Going Passed a Few Times And Waving To Each Other :) 4. The Location Is Ideal! Close To The ZipLine Slate Mine Where We Had Booked, And Many Other Sight Seeing Places, Lots To Do And See. Once The Negatives Are Sufficiently Addressed (Change Cleaner!:) It Would Be Perfect
