"listed as 5 star. It is not 5 star. The building is lovely, the location idyllic , the fittings are substandard for 5 star but the beds were comfy. We have stayed in many 5 star properties and even 4 stars which have been better than this and they have all provided everything we would need right down to the smallest detail like salt and pepper in the larder. After a 9 hour drive we arrived to find we could not even make ourselves a refreshing cup of tea as there were no supplies at all. Unlike an owner last year who even left us a home made cake and a bottle of wine along with eggs bacon bread tea coffee and milk as well as larder basic like sugar salt and pepper. This owner could learn a thing or two about 5 star treatment. The cottage was not furnished as the pictures show. We were a party of eight adults which included two chefs. The kitchen was poorly supplied with pots pans crockery, cutlery and glasses. Barely one of each and mismatched. We had a birthday to celebrate that week and couldn't even set the table for a three course meal. The picture shows an aga and an electric oven. The aga is not there and the oven too small to cook for so many. The bedroom pictures show tv's and curtains. No tv no curtains only a blind which didn't work properly in our room because it was broken a poorly repaired. No curtains in the dining room. The bar area in the lounge was totally unequiped, not a glass or jug or ice bucket to be found. The garden which is wall enclosed is beautiful but the pictures show a table and 8 chairs but in reality there was a large pub bench, fine for eating outside but nowhere to sit and while away a lovely summers day. Luckily we had taken a couple of folding chairs for us older members of the group or we wouldn't have been able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The bathrooms were lovely except for the bathroom on the landing which smell extremely bad. The bath in the attic bedroom had to be washed before use as it was dirty. There were many cobwebs around the house. Overall I would have to say this cottage is not 5 star. This the highest grade which cannot be improved upon so should be top class in all things, supply all things you could possibly need and have attention to detail. It did not."

"We were a four generation group with ages ranging from 85 down to 3 months and so the layout of the property suited us perfectly. The garden was secure for the two young children to play in and had a good area of level lawn as well as a large patio where they could ride their trikes and scooters. The games room provided entertainment for all age groups and housed the laundry facilities. The location was lovely and quiet and provided a peaceful place to relax and take in the beautiful view and yet was close to the M5. On the downside, the property was a bit grubby with a need for a better cleaning regime. The floors under the furniture were dirty and the cushions hadn’t been removed from the sofas for some time and so there was food and wrappers under them. It was a bit the worse for wear too. The property is eco-friendly and as a result the dishwasher wasn’t very effective and glasses, mugs and plates had been returned to the cupboards with food still stuck on them. There were far too many plates, glasses, dishes etc which meant there was limited cupboard space for our groceries, but the fridge freezer and cooking range were good. The property was warm and we never ran out of hot water. The bedrooms were good sizes but the mattresses were a bit uncomfortable apart from the fixed double sleigh bed. The bedding was clean but a bit worn. The TV in the lounge was tiny and there were only 3 chairs which could sit around it which didn’t bother us as we had good weather but could have been a problem if we were a group of people who liked to watch TV or films in the evenings. The BBQ was tiny and couldn’t be used to cook for more than 4 people. The owners are very pleasant and friendly and we did enjoy our stay."

"Oh wow what a stunning location! The views are wonderful. Waking up to the sounds of the countryside and watching the antics of the resident House Martins was amazing. The farm house is well equipped, clean and comfortable. Still not sure about the feathered topping on the mattress but thats only because I have never used one. It certainly did not stop me from having a goods night sleep. In fact I have never before slept so well in a strange bed! Loved the granite work inside the house, the fire places and very old wooden doors.Getting a mobile signal is not easy though we found we could get a signal either in the downstairs toilet(!!!) or in the back yard occasionally! Internet connection is also iffy but that happens in these remote places. Actually it was good to be un-glued from my mobile etc. for a week - I really DID have a holiday. Oh, and I saw a shooting star! Big thank you to the owners for our welcome pack i.e. local milk, butter and eggs and for the 'good places to eat' recommendations. The owner will even sort out your dinner on the day of your arrival - how good is that! We had amazing homemade pies and homemade ice cream - so lovely! For those who have dogs - the garden is completely secure (if you have very small dogs i.e. smaller/slimmer than a Jack Russell let the owners know and they will make the gate more secure - our little girl was able to slip through the bars - cheeky wotsit!)."

"We stayed at the Cider Barn the weekend of 16th March and wow….what a fantastic time we had. The house was absolutely stunning and so clean! All of the rooms were beautifullly set out and it was a real advantage all of them being en-suite. The house was spacious but also warm and cosy with spectacular views! The huge dining table is magnificent and the lounge area very comfortable! The kitchen was very well equipped and meant we could easily cook a large meal for 13 of us. The owners have literally thought of everything from two toasters, two kettles, two dishwashers etc, to having lots of games available and tea and coffee when we got there. We had such a great weekend and location is great, close to Exeter, the beach and we had a lovely lunch at the Smugglers Inn which is about 15 mins away. It’s really easy to find the house, the sat nav takes you to the bottom of the long steep drive, and then you basically just keep going all the way to the top. Also a massive thank you to Ralph who went above and beyond to rescue our friend when the taxi couldn’t make it out to the house to get her because of the heavy snow! He very kindly rescued her with his 4 x 4 and managed to safely get her to the train station, what a superstar! Could not rate this place highly enough and we are looking forward to hopefully returning one day."

"Cottage was beautiful, I expected it to be so and it was everything and more than I was expecting. Stuart was very accommodating, offering to keep an eye on the dogs if we wanted to leave them for a few hours and also asked us to call or see him if we wanted to know anything about where to go etc. We weren't the quietest group; celebrating a 30th birthday and an engagement all in one, but I never once felt that this affected Stuart and Jan who said hi every time we saw them. I thought we would make more use of the games room which is brilliant and had darts, books a ping pong table and also stuff for the kids (nit that we had any with us, but plastic kitchen play, skittles and probably more) but the house was so well suited for a social group, even though there were 12 of us, that we never did. I planned a skydive when I went as there is an airfield in dunkeswell 5 miles away so I would advise anybody to check that out! The only thing I think I would suggest is perhaps a sign for the hay loft at the guests entrance as I initially drove past maddocks farm as I was looking for the hay loft and then drove into maddocks farm having missed it, but the hay loft is immediately before maddocks farm. extremely minor point! I would love to book this place again!"
