What our customers say about their holidays

    • Susan - Verified booking

We chose to re visit Falmouth having moved up north some eighteen months ago.

Prior to moving we had lived in Falmouth for over 38years and knew Pendra Loweth / Maen Valley so chose to choose a cottage on the site, this been Spring Tide as it advertised no dogs, king size bed and a twin which was our criteria. Its been the worst cottage we have stayed at with it’s non welcome food smell of curry and to its total lack of cleanliness, lack of maintenance and lack of information on the use of equipment. The issues made us very wary with regards to our health. (Allergies especially dust). 1. Extremely dusty skirting boards more so in the twin room which we ended up cleaning, however, looking behind both bedrooms (with a torch) furniture the dust was extremely thick behind the wardrobes meaning this cottage has not been deep cleaned for a very very long time. (Photos taken) 2. The washing machine: the washer draw has not been cleaned and the washer had a very unpleasant stale smell so didn’t use. (Photos taken) 3. The standard of cleanliness regarding the crockery and cutlery. The dish drainer was dirty. The utensil holder for larger items has seen better days. (Photo taken) A wooden chopping board which should be condemned. The kitchen wooden blinds are dirty. (Photo taken) The lounge has such impractical furniture for a holiday let the cleaner has no way of moving to clean behind. 4. All the fans in the house are dusty , hence not used. (Photos taken) 5. The shower head is dirty (photo taken)with black mould along with mould in places in the bath. (Yes Cornwall is a damp county but it’s no excuse not to keep on top of it especially more so in a holiday let) 6. The patio table and chairs had not been cleaned prior to the let neither had the patio been swept or weeded (monkey nut shells under the table and chairs ) (photo taken) Other observations: 1. No instructions folder left out for guests (eventually found under other items in the bookcase):- No instructions for : A. TV which had Four monitors. B. Microwave ( instructions were for a former model) C. Instructions of how to use the oven and grill - all markings had faded over time along with the hob knobs. D. No first aid in any kitchen cupboard as per the Sykes part of the folder. E. The blind in the main bedroom had a hand written note on the windowsill to say it wasn’t working properly and how to higher and lower it. If it was known to be an issue by the owners ( who we understand visited before our arrival) then fix it. (Photo taken) We feel Sykes Cottages need to re inspect this property. We trust this constructive information will be taken onboard and improvements made in order that future guests will have a better experience than we did.

On arrival the house was very cold with no heating on.

Additionally the house was filthy and smelt appalling.Nothing had been hoovered the stair carpet in particular looks like it's never seen a hoover. The smell turned out to be all the downstairs hard floors had been mopped using a filthy mop that smelt of stale urine and has long seen better days. There we're filthy crockery in cupboards and as for the cutlery what can I say truly horrendous..u Upstairs was no better the bathroom has toilet seat that doesn't stay up or even fit and the grouting on the floor is filthy the sink doesn't hold any water.in the bedrooms things are no better very old poor quality mattresses in each room covered by toppers that don't fit.also why would you put double bed size bedding on king size bed? On our first night we went out and bought replacement bedding crockery and cutlery.Additionally the thermostats on most of the radiators don't work so you either cooked or froze the heating in the front bedroom room does not work at all.The blind in the twin room is broken Outside the garden is not dog proof with fencing being down in several places You also have to put out other people's rubbish which considering there is only one small bin is unpleasant Overall if I could leave zero stars I would. It appears as long as it's being booked the owners don't care about guests holidays or even there own property. All this points have been left by previous guests either in visitor book or online so please please do something about it before you ruin more people's holidays.please note that we booked this in 2019 and then had to change because COVID lock downs etc so at time booking we're unaware of poor previous reviews

We arrived after a 6 hour drive parked the car and then looked for the keysafe, which we couldn't find.

Rang Sykes as we were very tired and needed the loo. Sykes duly contacted you and said you would be in touch shortly. You weren't! We were pretty upset by this time as no-one from your company had bothered to ring us so rang Sykes again who contacted you a second time to get this situation sorted out. A neighbour who had also just arrived, heard what I was saying to Sykes and after a while we realised that the car parking was at the back of our our property - Flotsam - no. 87 and not at the front. All the other houses in our terrace had key safes near the back entrances except for ours and no. 86. This meant that we had to walk down the hill to the end of the row, go accross the side of the last house and then walk back up the path to get to the front of the house where there was not one but TWO keysafes. Finally, after a lot of unwanted hassle, we could get in. We were considerably upset by this experience as it would have been so easy to get in through the back entrance had there been a key safe there to enable this. We are both disabled and in our 80's. Luckily it wasn't raining or one of us would have been soaked by the time we got around to the front door. Not having one of those key safes near the back door is definately not user friendly and there is no mention of having to do the hike around the houses to get to the front. After a long and tiring jpurney this is not acceptable.. There is also no dishwasher in the property even though dishwasher tablets are being left for its use and there is no dryer either. What a fiasco that we could definately have done without!!

Cream teas and milk in the fridge on arrival was great and the property was clean, but is very tired and dated.

It has the potential to be amazing but it feels like you are living back in the 1980’s. Every cupboard in the kitchen is absolutely full of ‘stuff’ meaning there is nowhere for you to put food or anything you brought with you. The TV only worked sporadically as it has a loose connection and the shower was disappointing and the front door only stays closed if you lock it! We were aware there was no downstairs WC, but it was more of an issue than we expected as we took elderly family with us- the utility room is a huge waste of space - plenty of room to incorporate a downstairs WC- but as I’ve already said- the house needs money spending on it. The garden is a positive, getting the sun for most of the day. We also had telecom workman digging holes in the road for two days, blocking the driveway and starting work at 7.30am - it would have been good to be warned! The property is in a great location, but a bit basic - so sadly not for us.
