What our customers say about their holidays

    • Anna - Verified booking

      Perfect location for walks.

we and our two dogs stayed here for 7 nights and I feel like we could have stayed for at least another 7 at least and even then we couldn't have discovered all the gems of the Lake District. It's set at the most perfect location for any walks. It's literally 5 min walk from hardknot pass and about an hour walk from the Roman ruins on the other side of the pass. Coniston and Ambleside is around 30-45 min drive if you want to stock up on food you better off ordering online on asdas or tescos website as they do food deliveries. The cottage is very clean and fully equipped; washing machine dishwasher separate fridge and freezer kettle, toaster etc. The house is squeaky clean and very cosy. Perfect for a couples getaway. There's a fire burner in the front room, I do recommend putting the fire on, we visited mid May and the evenings do get rather chilly without the fire on. We lit the fire each afternoon, it gives the coziest, loveliest atmosphere to the whole little cottage. The owner, Sandra is the real gem of the Lake District. She is warm, welcoming and always there if needed. We purchased additional firewood (which is only a fiver btw) and Sandra was back in a heartbeat with more wood. She can look after the dogs if you'd like to visit the mines or if you'd like to go somewhere without them.. The area is perfect for ramblers and for dogs. Mind you sheep are everywhere so do keep your dog(s) on leash if they tend to chase for everyone's peace of mind. All in all a lovely charming little cottage with great walks just outside the window. Well worth a visit. We will be coming back. Thank you for the lovely hospitality, Paul and Anna. x

As previous reviewers have highlighted, if this is your first trip to Cockley Beck it may be advisable to take the A595 as your first route inbound, the Wrynose Pass is not for the more inexperienced driver.

.. The cottage itself is fantastic. All modern amenities are available, the kitchen is well equipped, and the living area is clean and well set out with the addition of a wood-burning stove. The bedroom is cozy (the bed was comfy & warm) with plenty of storage, and the bathroom is, well, a bathroom (and yes the shower does work and is perfectly fine - just watch yourself when setting the water temperature, the hot water is extremely hot). At the back is a parking area with a large garden which is fenced in to keep your dog(s) from wandering and mithering any of the local sheep. Did I mention that the cottage is a little remote though? Well it is, so be prepared... The cottage basically sits at the intersection between the Wrynose Pass, and the Hardknott Pass. The nearest pub, the Newfield Inn is approx. 4 miles from the cottage (a nice stroll itself) and serves good food and ale. If walking is your game (it is mine), then the walks from the front door are great, just keep your dog on a lead and shut the gates behind you! All the fells are close by, including my favourite Harrison Stickle, and Ambleside / Coniston are not far away at all. Wonderful, quiet cottage, with great hosts - would I recommend? A definite yes

Having had our holiday abroad cancelled due to Covid, we were looking for somewhere to holiday in the UK.

Our favourite place is the Lake District, so we were feeling extra lucky to find that Cockley Beck Cottage was available in August. This cottage is situated between the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes. WOW our journey brought us over the Wrynose Pass which is dramatic and spectacular (especially when the sun is shining). The Hardknott is just as amazing to ride too. We were warmly welcomed by the owner, and the cottage was just as we had expected. It was big enough for us (a couple and our four legged friend). There is a comfortable living area with a wood burner, dining table and an open kitchen area with everything you need, including a washer and dishwasher. The bathroom has a shower over the bath, and an heated towel rail. The bedroom has a bed, wardrobe and dressing table in, and is comfortable. At the rear of the cottage is a lovely long secure garden which our dog loved. There is also a table and 2 chairs (which we sometimes used to sit out and have breakfast or dinner). The owners are friendly, helpful and on the day before our departure we asked to buy some of their free range eggs, which were freshly picked for us. We would highly recommend this lovely cottage, and would not hesitate in booking it again.

This is a lovely cottage in a very remote location.

The owners are keen to stress this as it is several miles along a winding single-track road with passing places and several hills the most delightful countryside to the nearest shop. If you are looking to get away from the modern world then this is ideal...there is no phone signal or internet throughout most of the valley. It is also worth noting that from the cottage the road divides, one going over the Hardknott Pass and the other over Wrynose Pass...both exhilerating drives and not to be attempted in bad weather. Set your satnav to find Broughton-in-Furness first, then Cockley Beck as the final destination. However, please DO NOT be put off by these comments...the cottage's location is extremely beautiful and is an ideal base for exploring arguably the most wonderful valley and fells in the Lake District. The location, and absence of a lake makes it quieter than the shores of nearby Coniston or Windermere for example, and is particularly good for rambling. Plan your visit accordingly, bring all your provisions with you and unwind in front of the wood burner (logs supplied) with a glass or two of something that cheers!

The cottage has all that you need and the location is remote.

The owner answered our first call to give ETA but we couldn’t get hold of them after that. We therefore didn’t get additional logs needed for the log burner. Heater in the bedroom was inadequate and had no instructions. Upon arrival, after 7 hours drive, there was no heating, hot water or sense of welcome. We had to find and follow a set of instructions to turn on heaters, fridge, freezer, microwave etc. We’ve stayed in lots of places and never had this experience. Due to the bad weather, coupled with the remote location with limited alternatives to hiking, we left two days early. Again, no answer from the owners when we called to tell them, and we’ve heard nothing from them since. We won’t be going back, and can’t really recommend this place, especially since there are so many lovely other options.
