What our customers say about their holidays

    • Kay - Verified booking

All was pretty much as expected and we have used Sykes numerous times so have trust with the name and quality of accommodation and will continue to do so.

A few things fall outside of Sykes' control. One being noisy neighbours! They had a riot in the first proper sunshine of the year which kind of ruined our hot tub quiet until they left on the Monday. Also they parked in the Cowshed allocated parking spot. We parked elsewhere but it was inconsiderate for my 87 year old father. Note the lanes are a bit precarious for nervous (or impatient) drivers. It was difficult adhering to keeping the dog off furniture and downstairs. There's a door to stop him going upstairs (which we managed) but off furniture during the night would be impossible as its open-plan. Hence we always travel with throws to amply cover a small area of a sofa and protect it well. We move cushions to stop him jumping on elsewhere. This works when we can't watch him. We thankfully gave my recently widowed father a great holiday. The ground floor facilities suited him; we visited so many places and all had a holiday to remember.

We had a lovely stay at the Olde Cowshed, the property suited us well and was well presented, tidy and nice to have cake, wine and a few essentials available on arrival.

The call a few days before from Chloe to give us key information - and particularly to give us a heads up about the recent flooding in the area - was great. The area is very nice - very rural and quiet (though will depend a bit on how busy the surrounding cottages are!), and some nice walks along the nearby ridge and other paths. There were signs the cottage is well used, in that a few things were worn/broken or loose and could use attention - the bits I noted were: - One of cafetieres has the wrong lid for the body, so won’t work - Lots of loose fixtures, e.g. glass holders, towel holders in bathrooms - Missing/broken stairgate wall fixings upstairs (and one missing downstairs) - Loose screws under both small coffee tables resulting in wobbly legs - Corkscrew broken and close to unusable All the essentials were in good order though, so none of the above greatly affected our stay.

We had a great stay at the old hall barn 2.

The bath is well equipped with everything you need, the bath is a lot bigger than expected, with lovely homeley touches. The hot tub is just an added bonus. Garden great for the dogs, there is a back gate which is a bit stiff which could do with improving when coming in that way with the dogs after walking. We spent a lot of time at the lovely local pub, beautiful walks are literally on the door step, amazing scenery. We were a little surprised that the dogs were not allowed in the living room or bedrooms, so we spent all our time when together in the one main room. When there are more than two of you it would be nice to have another chair to sit on rather than just the dining chairs. Nevertheless we had a lovely time and the beds were very comfy. There is a washing machine and the owner provides an airer, and a washing line outside.

The cottage is lovely, comfortable and well-equipped.

My dogs were very happy in the enclosed garden. Lovely views from the hot tub! The owners were friendly and helpful without being intrusive. There was plenty of wildlife to watch from the garden - my mum even saw a heron close-up, that came down to the stream at the bottom of the garden. There are a lot of walks nearby, with Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley virtually on the doorstep. Church Stretton is about a 15 minute walk (or a quick drive) away - a pretty little town. The golf course also welcomes walkers and dogs (on leads, there are sheep everywhere) and you can get a coffee there when the clubhouse is open. We had a nice lunch in the beer garden of the pub in Little Stretton, which also allows dogs. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay if you like walking, or just want to sit and relax.

We had a great stay in a lovely cottage - however there are 2 areas that would stop us from returning unless rectified.

      1. The sofa in the living area need replacing as it is extremely uncomfortable and we note complaints about this go back to 2019 in the guest book. 2. Why is there no door to the bathroom and toilet area ? We dont think this would be an issue if access was to a shower room only but the toilet is also there. Cardington itself is very picturesque and the local pub The Royal Oak is excellent and only 2 minutes walk from the cottage. We found the locals very friendly and engaging and the Shropshire hills wonderful walking country. The welcome pack from Sue Tyrell was very much appreciated as was the constant supply of logs for the wood burner. All in all a brilliant break apart from the 2 points already noted above and we would definitely recommend and return once the negatives above are rectified..
