  • . Tucked away down a very quiet country lane is this 16th-century Grade II listed thatched cottage. The property is one of a pair and has been completely renovated, offering some original features including inglenook fireplace, beams, historic bread oven and also very contemporary touches for today’s lifestyle.
The property is decorated and furnished to a very high standard, situated next door to the owner, but offering a very private setting. At the bottom of the lane is a small river with a ford across to the fields, and there is no through traffic. It lies close to Axminster, an unspoilt Devon market town situated on the River Axe, surrounded by stunning countryside and filled with charm and character. This attractive market town lies in the beautiful Axe Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasting quaint villages and unspoilt countryside. Famous for its carpets, the original Axminster factory was opened in 1755 by Thomas Whitty and authentic British ’Axminsters’ are still made in the town by Axminster Carpets. Situated a few miles inland from the Jurassic Coast, guests can visit towns such as Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Seaton with its famous tramway.
Tucked in the south east corner of Devon, Axminster is an ideal touring centre for the neighbouring counties of Somerset and Dorset, with Lyme Regis and Charmouth just 6 miles away.
Celebrity chef and TV presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has his very first River Cottage Canteen and Deli (an organic produce shop/market and canteen) here, and his River Cottage HQ is nearby in the Axe valley. There are many places to visit close by including many NT properties. This is an ideal spot for walking with a footpath close to the property. The Yarty Valley is a very peaceful area and ideal for bird watching, cycling the country lanes or just relaxing on the patio enjoying views of the river. Shop and pub/restaurant 2 miles (1 mile via footpath).

"Loved this cottage. Great place, very well supplied. Very friendly and welcoming. We went with a dog and a 2 month old and it was excellent for both."
    Geoffrey ‐ 11 Nov 2019
"Stayed with friends and our dog at the beginning of November. Is a tough cottage to find, and the roads are a bit frightening, but the reward is never to be forgotten !The cottage has been thoughtfully and beautifully renovated, every detail has been attended to and no expense spared. The kitchen is massive and everything is there, underfloor heating this time of year is frankly genius !The stairs are steep and I would worry about infirm/young people, but they are only short at least. The bedrooms are big, the en suites excellent and again everything has been thought of, comfortable mattresses and pillows with plenty of wardrobe space too.Lovely comfortable living room with an extremely efficient wood burner, also probably the cleanest !Outside space in the garden not huge and quite a slope up to the parking area, but nice to have a covered 2 space area in The Cider barn.Surroundings are great, as is the farmshop Millers, only 1 mile away, but I would have gone there everyday as the food quality and wine choice are truly awesome !A great place to unwind, thank you"

"An excellent cottage. Have already recommended to friends. Would definitely stay there again. The owners were very helpful and lovely."
    William ‐ 20 Oct 2019
"Absolutely the best out of the 8 we have booked!"
    Joy ‐ 15 Oct 2019
"Utterly blown away by this cottage and all the family loved it. It was exceptionally clean with every utensil needed for cooking - which made my role as chief cook a delight to undertake. The underfloor heating was heaven as I hate slippers and thus I spent most of my time dancing on the warm floors! The owners very kindly left some fabulous goodies which were all yummy 😋 The chickens were so cute and I found myself visiting them several times a day! Like everything else in the cottage, the bedrooms were tastefully and beautifully furnished and the beds and pillows were so sumptuous.Good use of the games, books and dvds were made - an excellent selection for all to enjoy. I have stayed at some beautiful and unique cottages over the years and I am delighted to say that The Farmhouse is unequivocally in my top three favourites. Enormous thanks to the Sue and John, the owners, for their thoughtful planning and exquisite taste and being so approachable and helpful."

"Absolutely the most comfortable and well equipped holiday rental that we've ever stayed in! Owners were lovely and couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful! We had 3 generations staying at the cottage (and a dog!) and there was something for everyone. Wouldn't hesitate to rebook if we come to this area again for a holiday. Thanks!"

    Tom ‐ 21 Apr 2019
"Great location with relatively easy access to a host of holiday locations within 3 counties as well as being hidden away within lovely Devon countryside. The cottage is very well presented with a wide range of comforts and plenty of space for outside activity or relaxing within. The owners, who live next door, were very welcoming and discrete. Very happy to recommend this cottage and we will hopefully return as some stage soon."
    Lara ‐ 6 Apr 2019
"Beautiful cottage with a perfect mix of traditional and modern in an idyllic location. Fully equipped with everything you need home from home. Thoughtful and tasty treats were an added bonus. Will be booking another stay as soon as we can!"
    Alan ‐ 30 Mar 2019
"A superb cottage, extremely well equipped, all to a high quality. A lovely feeling of isolation on a dead-end drive terminating at the River Yarty, yet only a 10 minute drive into Axminster. Great walking from the door, lovely views, the owners very approachable and friendly but not over-intrusive."
    Samantha ‐ 2 Mar 2019
"Had the wow factor as soon as we saw the cottage from the lane by the time we stepped inside we were smitten. So thoughtfully designed. The welcome pack of food and drink was very much appreciated. Thank you so much for a wonderful week bathed in February sunshine."
    Tracy ‐ 24 Feb 2019
"Beautiful property with everything you could possibly need."
    Michelle ‐ 3 Nov 2018
