What our customers say about their holidays

    • Nick - Verified booking

Not a bad cottage for the money and also dog friendly.

Reasonably spacious inside but does have a small living room. The log burner in the living room is nice and heats the place well. When we arrived it had been lit and was burning already which was a nice touch. We did find the place was too warm for our liking but that is personal preference. There was enough kindling and coal to get us through the first night. The kitchen was big and quite well kitted out. There was no foil or cling film, which would be nice to have, meaning we needed to go to the shop the next morning to get it. We also found many of the glasses were not well cleaned so we had to wash them first. The bathroom was a bit of a let down. It was spacious and had some rustic charm but the shower was abysmal with all the pressure of a dripping tap. The shower curtain wasn’t too clean at the bottom and would be better if they could put in a screen. The space in the shower in general was small and claustrophobic. We were shocked that there was only a single toilet roll with less than half a roll left for us. We had to add this to the shopping trip for the next morning and hope we didn’t run out, if there were four of us it may have been a different story. The bathroom is downstairs which is common in old properties but does make for a long trip if you need to go in the night. There is a small room, between the living room and bathroom, which makes a great reading nook or study and has a great feel to it. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a dressing room. There is a double bed in the one room which we used. We found this to be quite uncomfortable and the duvet seemed small, this may be due to being used to a king size. A king sized bed would fit in the room and be a nice finish. The room was quite hot and we had to open the sky light but this meant the wind howled through waking us up regularly enough to need to close it again. The other room which is accessed through the dressing room had two mis-matched single beds. On the whole the furniture throughout is outdated and really needs updating. The house could do with some refurbishment to bring it out of the 70’s and 80’s, I know some people think that is rustic but it does need updating. The cleanliness could do with being better, there are lots of cobwebs about and the kitchen wear is not well cleaned, but in the whole it is ok. Be aware this is an old property with low door frames and a very low ceiling height up the stairs. The outside is nice with a raised grass area and a decent wrap around patio. There is plenty of parking out the front with a car port. The garden is secure but if you have a dog which jumps fences I would avoid this as the fences are only around 3 feet tall in places. We chose this cottage because of the secluded setting but were disappointed to find it is surrounded by static caravans. It was quiet for us due to being a winter trip but I imagine it could be a busy setting during the summer. It looks like more static caravans are being built in the area too making it even more busy.

We had a lovely stay over the half term break in February 2022.

Fabulous accommodation that has been recently refurbished so very fresh feeling. Clean and spacious throughout and designed well with aged wooden beams used to divide downstairs rooms but allowing an open plan feel for families and groups. We had everything we needed for our stay and the washing machine and dryer certainly came in handy when we returned from being caught in the rain. The Wifi worked brilliantly which is always important for our sanity when going on holiday with 2 teenagers. The hot tub was perfect and we spent many an evening under the stars sat in it relaxing. Parking was right next to the cottage. Beds were comfy. Bathrooms spacious. Very cosy inside. It was perfect. The hosts/property owners live locally and introduced themselves. They are very friendly and were on hand to make sure you have a lovely stay and kindly gave me information on local walks and areas of interest. A welcome basket was left for us on arrival full of local goodies but the welsh cakes were the best i've ever tasted (and i've tasted a lot). We will definitely book Swallows Rest again in the future.

The cottage is in a lovely quiet setting, with views of rolling hills and great parking facilities.

We regularly saw the owner who was extremely friendly and helpful. As a newly marketed property there were a couple of issues which we fed back to the owner, and, where possible, these were sorted straightaway, and other issues, if not already in hand, were taken on board. The cottage was immaculate, and on arrival we were greeted with a welcome basket containing wine, home made scones, butter, milk, eggs, fruit juice and bread - thank you Jayne. On booking the cottage a hot tub was not a requirement but it actually made our holiday and was used everyday. We liked that it was located in the side garden, so lots of privacy. Disappointing that the pub in the village is no longer open, especially as it was walking distance. You definitely need a car to enjoy this property but there are walks and bike rides that start close by. We also had days out to Fforest zip line world in Betws y Coed, a trip to the beach as Aberystwyth, and kayaking in Shrewsbury, so plenty of choice to fill your days. Great relaxing week had by all.

    • Mr Steven De'Ath - Verified booking

The first thing we noticed when we arrived was just how close the next door neighbour's property is and that they overlooked where we were staying. However this was never really an issue except on the day of our arrival (which was also the day of the Queen's funeral) when they were playing very loud music which was quite upsetting especially because after a 7 hour drive to get there all we wanted was to enjoy a quiet drink next to the babbling stream. Another matter that surprised us was the steep drive down to the house. We were warned about this by the owner just prior to the holiday commencing so we elected to take our 4x4 SUV rather than our estate car. And I'm so glad we did because the estate car would easily have bottomed out and grounded for sure. However, none of these were a major issue and certainly never detracted nor spoiled our break in any way. in fact overall we had a really fabulous stay and loved everything about the cottage which is a credit to the owners. Thank you.

On the day of travel we were informed that the log burner was out of order.

This was a huge disappointment as it was one of only two important search criteria for us when booking and we'd purchased logs for our stay. On arrival we couldn't access the key safe. We rang the contact and a man came out promptly to help us, however he couldn't access it either. Eventually we got in. The inside of the cottage was nice and traditional, however every room is covered in thick dusty, old cobwebs from eye level and above. We honestly had never seen so many cobwebs! Door handles, switches and light pulls were very grubby and the lid of the loo doesn't stay up. The lounge is cosy and upstairs there's plenty of space. Sleep was not good though as every morning a noisy boiler fired up at 6.30am. The boiler makes the bed shake! This could be a lovely cottage as the location and privacy is great, but it needs a thorough deep clean.
