What our customers say about their holidays

    • Diana - Verified booking

A darling little cottage for 1 or 2 plus a small/medium pet, like ours (Jack Russell), which is attached to The Coach House so you are overlooked but this didn't bother us at all.

On entry, you walk straight into the galley dining & kitchen which provide everything you need for your stay including washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, ( even laundry pods! ) dishcloths, tea towels and oven mit. A nice touch was the bottle of prosseco, pint of milk, tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits, salt & pepper. There is a fire extinguisher. In the lounge , we are on the large size and found, the 2 seater comfortable. The wifi and freesat worked fine ( had to switch off and reset router once which is usual for us at home so not a bother). There is also a small selection of books and dvds. Toilet/shower room was clean and even I could squeeze into the shower so it is a good size and water was lovely. The provision of soap and toilet paper was a bonus. All linen and towels are hotel grade; White and soft. The bed is a double with a soft, bouncy mattress. Lush! You can squeeze past to get to the single wardrobe which was large enough for our clothes. There are only 3 drawers in the dresser but again this was enough for our smalls. We could hear our neighbours only when they went up or down stairs, otherwise it is very well soundproofed. There is a folder containing all the information you need (eg alternate bin collected on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday and they recycle). It was very clean, albeit a cobweb, but it is in the country so we weren't bothered by this. On leaving we were happy to strip the bedding and put into the laundry bag with used towels and ensure everything we used was washed and put away. We spent 4nights here and enjoyed walking the grounds of the house and gardens. We truly felt we were on holiday!

Basically a very pleasant and comfortable cottage for two people set in a lovely part of the Cotswolds within easy reach of numerous attractions, but, and there is always a but, the devil is in the detail and it is in the detail that this cottage fails.

Our feeling was that the owners have rather given up. The occupancy rate is clearly rather low and the level of care and attention likewise. All of the following complaints are, in themselves minor, but they add up to making what could be a really lovely experience turn out to be a bit frustrating. The information (or perhaps instruction) booklet clearly dates from Covid and has not been updated, similarly the rack of tourist information leaflets is wildly out of date, many are dated 2018. The lighting, particularly in the living room is so poor that reading during the evening is difficult. The TV is very small and the DVD player only worked once. The instruction book did not seem to refer to the TV on the premises and the remote control did not work properly. The kitchen was quite good but the fridge was only a larder fridge without even a compartment to make a tray of ice cubes or to freeze ice packs for picnics. There is no washing machine which is unusual these days. I believe that electrical appliances should have a PAT test certificate, only one had and this was some years out of date. I also believe there should be a gas safety certificate on the premises but we couldn’t find one (forgive me if I am wrong about either of these points)

      The accommodation was fine.

However we found the lady owner unfriendly and unhelpful. Shortly after arriving I left a message on her phone requesting some salt and paper and also some kitchen roll. The photographs on your website appear to show salt and pepper on the worktop and clearly show a roll of kitchen towel – neither were in the kitchen (there was an empty kitchen roll holder). I received a curt text back thanking me for the call but saying “we are self-catering” – end of message. The duvet in the bedroom was a heavy, winter 10.5 tog and there was no alternative blanket or throw to use instead. Two tablets of dishwasher detergent were left but no detergent for the washing machine. It would have been nice to have a container for the recyclables as well as a kitchen bin for rubbish. Most establishments also provide a small amount of oil and clingfilm – again nothing. Rather than a box of chocolates being left surely more than 4 individual teabags, 4 Nescafe sachets and 4 tiny rolls of sugar would be more useful and appreciated. It was friendly of Mr Buckingham Snr to say goodbye to us on the morning of our departure. My husband enjoyed his chat.

Appin Cottage was a lovely little property in a fabulous location and was well enough equipped for a short break.

Lack of outdoor space was an issue for us as we enjoy spending time outside relaxing. There is only a (very) small area to sit which is on the road so no privacy. The cottage unfortunately was not clean when we arrived. There were dirty trays in the oven and the floor needed a good clean. 2 hoovers are provided however neither worked so I had to resort to a dustpan and brush. I wouldn't like to say how long the floors had not been cleaned but they were not good. There was also a very strong pungent smell of what we thought was mould/damp/drains as soon as we entered the cottage and remained throughout our stay. Due to the lack of a hoover, I lifted the rug to shake off outside to discover it was full of mould on the underside. There were also no starter logs provided as stated in the listing. As the cottage has a damp feel, it is quite cold so logs are necessary whatever the weather. Overall, it is a lovely little place but could do with being checked by the owners. I have already been in touch and informed them of the issues.

Overall it was a lovely holiday cottage, it was just the right size for me and my daughter and in a beautiful location.

My only gripes are the following: 1) Please have the owners install an electric towel rail. The welcome manual advises no clothes to be hung over the electric heaters and suggests you hang towels over the bannister to dry. After 2 days of wet towels, wet shoes there was a definite dampness in the cottage. We were lucky with the weather so hung wet towels on our camping chairs at the front of the property but had this been typical British weather, we would’ve struggled. 2) the front door wouldn’t stay open by itself so with trying to let air circulate, we had to use the broom then eventually a rock that was used to keep the bin lids shut to keep the door open. There is poor ventilation in the cottage so Please ask the owner to fix a hook to the wall so the door can be latched on to. 3) And finally, a cheese grater. This may not sound an essential holiday need but keeping with essential kitchen utensils, it would’ve been very useful, we had to use the potato peeler instead so all was not lost.
