What a lovely warm, homely cottage this place is feeling spacious - even for 6 of us and a Golden Retriever - in a beautiful and convenient location with an enclosed rear garden but with a few niggles.

Let's start in the kitchen; it is only fair to mention that this property is missing some standard kitchen basics such as an ice cream scoop, oven gloves, baking trays of any description (yet loads of pots and pans!), or storage for personal food. Bearing in mind this is a property that sleeps 8 there is virtually nowhere to store any food you might have brought with you or bought whilst out and about. The fridge freezer is great but the lights on the Rangemaster didn’t work which was inconvenient. Water waste from kitchen sink plastic drain kept coming away from the outer wall leaving all the grey waste to simply pour onto the concrete path outside the kitchen. The door to the outside from the kitchen is so stiff it is almost impossible to open and close. Fortunately, there are wide, easy-opening patio doors from the lounge to the rear garden area. The lounge is odd. There isn’t enough seating for everyone if all 8 berths are used and then it’s completely disjointed so families cannot all sit easily together. Some seating is set around the fire whilst others are set around the TV. Notices are quite adamant that you aren’t allowed to re-arrange the furniture due to damaging the beautiful floor (understandable) but why then can’t the decent sized TV be moved to the same wall side as the fire and have all seating around both the fire and TV allowing the whole group to watch a film together or cosy-up sharing stories around the fire; a simple change which would have made our stay significantly better. The sofas were different than in the pictures. They have been upgraded and are very comfy. The second small lounge was really useful and very cosy. A big plus. The dining room also worked well for us as a family of 6. It doubled up as a games room for us to play card and board games. Might be a tight squeeze for 8. The bathrooms are pleasant spaces although the toilet seats in 2 of the 3 toilets aren’t designed for men to stand up to wee in as the seat physically can’t stay up without being held in place. The showers are good - if used on their own. Unfortunately, you can’t use them at the same time, water pressure and heat vanishes when showering upstairs if someone starts using the downstairs shower. A towel hook close to the showers themselves would be a nice touch rather than having to leave towels on the floor. The towels are lovely and soft but not really large enough to walk around the property with - especially when there is no curtain, covering, or frosting over the glass front door. The bedrooms are spacious with plenty of storage although one of the twin beds is extremely soft which was a shame as most of them were lovely, firm, and comfy. The landing and stairs have a lovely comfy carpet and whilst the stairs look very grand and luxurious there’s not much room to get past to the kitchen, shower-room, and dining room areas. There are also parking issues. We came in two vehicles, a large Ford Tourneo which we appreciate is large and wouldn’t fit on the drive but our other vehicle is only a Citroen C5 Aircross which I would consider a typical sized family car. I could only just fit it on the drive by getting right up close to the front wall. Again for a large family property, to utilise the 8 berths, better parking is required and could be fairly easily accommodated by a bit of landscaping at the front. I appreciate this sounds rather negative but really we wanted to highlight a few frustrations we had as we had an overall really lovely time here. There is so much to enjoy and admire about the property, it was a relaxing stay and it will be on our shortlist of places to return as overall, it worked well for us.

Overall this is a great sized property for the recommended number of people and we would be willing to stay again, more so if the issues are fixed.

Good points include the upstairs bathroom being a great size with a gorgeous bath and shower, location is great close to nice pubs and amazing walks, the garden is a great size and well enclosed for dogs, the kitchen is well equipped for cooking and has a good sized fridge/freezer and oven. The sofas and beds are a little tired but really comfy and more than fine for the purpose. There are some negatives though and points that need fixing. The washing machine wasn't working, it didn't appear to have a hot water supply and hence we were left with cold wet dirty washing. The clothes airer provided is broken with plastic parts snapped, we were unsure as to why this was left in the property, luckily we had brought our own. A few of the bulbs in the lamps were not working, these just need to be checked and replaced. No fuel was provided for the fire despite this being advertised on the listing and there was some newspaper filled with ashes at the side uncleaned. Frustratingly a lot of the doors won't close properly as the latches are either not there at all or don't work. This can make it difficult stopping dogs/ children leaving certain rooms. There is no starter pack provided so you have to crawl on the floor get to the wifi password and figure things out like laundry and bins for yourself. There was not enough hand soap and toilet rolls in the property so we had to buy more of our own. Only 3 hand towels were provided despite there being 7 of us in the house. The seal around the downstairs shower needs replacing as now the water spills out if the shower head is pointed towards the shower screen. The kitchen needs much better cleaning in the future, there was an open packet of something on top of the fridge, many of the insides of the cupboards were messy and greasy, and the floor was black when you wiped it with a damp piece of kitchen paper.

The holiday cottage was compact and homely and had beautiful views over the hills surrounding it .

It felt like an escape from our other pressures and some of the neighbours were very helpful about the surrounding areas and lots of leaflets in cottage too . Parking at the cottage was reasonable, and we were shown by a helpful neighbour how to access property behind ,as to the front is a pretty busy road, so difficult with shopping and dogs . It would have been useful to have some basic pointers about useful info, as to how to work the boiler, use hob and recycling or bin facilities. The manuals were in a drawer, but I for one struggled with the convector hob , gave up one night but eventually got it to work . For dog owners ,they need to be prepared to lock front door and take dogs out on lead to garden that is set up high at the back..up 2 sets of steps ,this was not an issue for us,but could be if less active . The bonus was the rural setting was really lovely . The beds were comfortable enough and towels and linen provided.. Possibly the sofa and chairs needed to be a bit bigger or something for sprawling, but yet again the cottage is quite small for larger furniture .Many thanks, we enjoyed our stay and the purple heather on the hill behind was in full glory ..

We choose Chinley due to the location and size of property.

Family close by so it was perfect. We agreed with previous posters that said there wasn’t enough plates & bowls for a house that slept 8 people. The dresser had some random items in it that would be of little use to many. Didn’t use the washing machine so no idea if that worked or not. Also agree that the drive is only suitable for one car, not an issue as easily parked on the road. The double bedroom nearest the upstairs bathroom smelt very strongly of damp which we think was possibly down to the shower leaking next door. It was very noticeable if the door had been shut for any length of time. Overall with this being used as a large holiday let some areas showed signs of wear and tear. The carpets had a few stains on mainly on the landing. The sofas were well used. It’s very difficult to find holiday homes close to family that have a secure garden. This house had a good secure garden. We had a great takeaway from the Indian restaurant and the coffee/wine bar is also very good. We would definitely stay here again and would give it 5 stars if some of the issues were addressed.

The cottage could best be described as ‘adequate’.

Not particularly clean and rather lacking in kitchen utensils (plates, bowls, cutlery etc.) There was no welcome pack, or information provided. I wasn’t aware that the field at the end of the track behind the cottage was out of bounds to people and dogs, but was abruptly informed of this by a very grumpy woman who accosted me as soon as I passed through the open gate. Information about this in the cottage would have been helpful. However despite this, we enjoyed our stay at Bea’s Cottage - the views at the front are lovely, the surrounding area is beautiful and perfect for great walks with our dog. Access to the front door of the property is difficult due to lack of pavement and a very busy main road, which made unloading and loading the car quite perilous. Bed was comfortable and plenty of clean towels and bedding provided. The local pub - The Lantern Pike was excellent. We enjoyed two meals here and the staff and regulars very friendly.
