What our customers say about their holidays

    • David - Verified booking

      This is an amazing place.

We visited in February 2024, finding that this place was big enough for us to holiday with some friends of ours. They have a family of five and we have a family of four, making 9 people in all, including 5 children (all under 10 years old). It’s nice that it’s a bungalow so you don’t have to worry about stairs and children falling down them, and it didn't feel in any way cramped with all the people staying there. This place is it is massive! All the rooms are a good size, but the kitchen / diner / living room is just huge, and a great place to hang out. The weather was just ok while we were here, but that didn’t matter as there was plenty of space to play for the kids without having to be outside all the time. It’s also a very quiet place. When you look out the window all you see is fields, and a little pond/lake. It’s worth mentioning that it is brand new. This is a great thing, as almost everything in it is new, but there were a couple of ‘teething problems’ when we were there. The owners were very quick to respond to our issues, but we’re aware this is common when things are new. We couldn’t for the life of us work the record player, for example, but the owner has said she will put in instructions to make this easier to use. We experienced a small leak of water during the heavy rain above the main sliding doors too, but again, the owners addressed this. They were only small and understandable things, and nothing that stopped our stay there from being a great one. It’s worth mentioning that it’s a bit of a drive to the nearest shops. There’s a Co-op in Wem 12 minutes away, but Lidl & Tesco are a 20 minute drive away in Shrewsbury. Not big issues, but just worth being aware of. Despite the weather, we did still manage to get out, enjoying visits to Shrewsbury, Hawkstone Follies and Chirk Castle. All of these places were lovely, and there were plenty of other things we could have done if we were there for longer. There’s certainly plenty to do in the area. We couldn’t really fault the place. It’s a great holiday home and we had a great time there. It had everything we needed, and we would love to stay there again, which is why we’re rating it 5 stars.

I stayed at Grange Barn a couple of weeks ago with some friends and we all loved it!

The single-storey accommodation is very spacious and built to a high standard. Despite its size and exposure, it’s very warm and cosy with underfloor heating and good insulation. It is also very well equipped, not just in terms of furniture, kitchen equipment etc. but also in terms of supplies provided by the owners, which far exceeds what most other such accommodation offers. The owners are also very helpful and responsive, I found them a pleasure to deal with. There are 4 good sized bedrooms, one double bed and 3 kings that can be split into singles, the 2 bathrooms (1 ensuite) are spacious with large walk-in showers and dual shower heads, a rain shower and a handheld one. There is also another toilet with a sink, making 3 in total. Even the hallway is spacious and has its own sofa! The coup de grâce is the open lounge and kitchen, it’s enormous and extremely sociable for entertaining and celebrating. It also helps that noise is not an issue, even if the bluetooth Bose speaker (also connected to a vinyl record player) is at full blast. The large, enclosed patio will be brilliant during the summer, the owners already have outdoor furniture and a BBQ would be a welcome addition. We didn’t manage get to get the outdoor hot tub going due to bad weather but it’s another indication of the quality of the accommodation. The secluded location can be difficult to find, the postcode is useless and will take you to the wrong place, using what3words (https://what3words.com/library.flexibly.unlisted) and/or following the owners’ directions is your best bet. The coordinates for the venue are 52°50'53.3"N 2°48'48.3"W – you should be able to enter these into Google Maps to find the exact location. The venue can be used to explore the local meres or for more varied and challenging outdoor activities both the Shropshire Hills and Clwydian Range & Dee Valley areas of natural beauty are around 45 minutes drive away. I highly recommend Grange Barn as a venue and intend to go back at some point.

We had a wonderful stay 3 night stay at Grange Barn.

We were two families meeting up for the first time in approximately 18 months. The house itself was just beautiful, the renovations and decorations have been done immaculately. The communal space was just perfect for us, eating, chatting and dancing! The children were very happy with so much space. There were lots of little extras provided to get you started, that you wouldn't always find in a holiday let, such as tea, coffee, bread, milk, local biscuits, prosecco, dog shampoo... to name a few! This was a lovely touch and added another level of luxury. The owner, Kirsty, was very helpful prior to our stay, answering my questions via email, nothing was too much trouble. They recommended a local pub, The Dickin Arms, where we had a lovely Sunday lunch. My only suggestion might be to look at developing the outside space, in particular the grassed area in front of the terrace, as I could see this being perfect in the Summer for garden games and children playing. We visited at the end of March, so didn't have the weather for it this time! We did make use of the wood-fired hot bath, which took quite a while to prepare, but was lush. (Logs and firelighters provided too!) All in all, a fantastic place that we hope to return to one day, as I am sure there is lots more to explore in the local area (or maybe just to chill out in the beautiful house again!).

I was upset to find there was no phone signal at Cranberry Cottage, this needs flagging up on the website, not something to find out on arrival.

Combined with the owner not being around I felt vulnerable with a medical condition that could need urgent contact by phone. A named person and house to go to would have alleviated my anxiety: there were not " plenty of people around" and no one contacted me. Welcome was generally poor with minimal provision- a few tea bags, sugar, jar of stale , solid coffee but no milk and no oil. Great to have a pepper grinder and to find some vinegar though. Cooking for myself, I needed to run the dishwasher every day, but only 4 tablets were provided. Otherwise the cottage was great, super location for walks of all lengths from the door and an excellent collection of walks leaflets and books for exploration near and far. I loved watching red kite and swallows from the comfy sofa. The shower room with its heated towel rail was very comforting on the day I got drenched and chilled. Good storage in the bedroom with a firm bed, which I like, but a hard mattress that I don't. The living space is bright and open and didn't overheat on the hot days. A lovely place to be.

The cottage itself is very lovely.

Is well equipped for everything you'd need for your week away. There's a welcome chalkboard with all the relevant information you'd need, however unlike 99% of Sykes Cottages there isn't a welcome pack ( ie tea, coffee or milk ) It's an incredibly easy place to keep clean if you take your four legged friend with and walks a plenty just up the road. However visitors should be aware you can't let your dog off a lead when in the 'garden' part of the property. So if you were to visit in the warmer months and wanted to sit out this is something to have in mind. Think it might be an easy fix on the owners behalf by putting gates at the entrances. We unfortunately didn't get a chance to meet Kate on our visit but she was more than helpful on the phone before we arrived and had we had any problems I wouldn't have hesitated in giving her a call and asking her help. Would recommend.
