What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jennifer - Verified booking

I would have given 0 stars but the least you can give is one.

The only positive thing I can say is the property is in a great location. On arrival we struggled to gain entry to the property as the front yale had been double locked from the inside. Overall the house is in a very poor state of repair, cracked and peeling plaster, peeling paint on walls, kitchen cupboards and furniture, window frames coming away from the walls. It is a period property so I assume listed, so you could overlook it being rough around the edges if the property was clean, but it wasn't. We felt grubby and unable to fully relax for our entire stay. The floors, rugs and carpets were dirty, there was dust, cobwebs and general dirt everywhere you looked. Black mould on bathroom grout and shower heads that didn't work fully due to limescale build-up. Baked on food and actual food in the microwave and oven. Dirty oven trays just sat in the oven that has not been cleaned for a long time. Towels and bedding were clean but it is clear to anyone who runs their own home that the property has had nothing but a cursory "clean" for some time. Shonky bannister rail on first floor which left the member of our party with mobility issues feeling unsafe using the stairs. (They live in a period property themselves, so are usedto steep staircases). A more trivial issue that the tv remotes don't work properly and the tv turns itself off at random. We tried to ring the landlord about the state of the kitchen, calls did not connect to his phone. I rang Sykes immediately and sent photos, got a standard "we've passed it to landlord" response and my complaint was closed straightaway, even though it wasn't resolved. We heard nothing from the landlord and nothing further from Sykes (despite making further contact that wasn'treplied to). We were left with a kitchen no one would want to use. The kitchen was in the same state wbe we left so it is not the case that it was resolved whilst we were out. Would not recommend the property or booking through Sykes to anyone. Which is a shame as my family have used Sykes for many years without issue but it only takes one poor experience to take your business elsewhere. You are told to report issues as soon as they happen so they can be resolved. We did and they weren't. If we had reported it after we would have been told it was too late to do so. It seems that it doesn't matter when you report issues, they don't get resolved either way

We locked ourselves out of the property about half an hour after arriving- not used to Yale keys!

The Sykes member of staff was extremely helpful and contacted the owner, who arrived about ten minutes later, in the rain, in her dressing gown, having just got out of the shower! Dedication to the property =100%! She was so lovely and friendly. From then on, the holiday just got better. The property had everything described online, but more in character than could be described. The owner has really tried to think of everything that you might need. Even had 2 fridges in case the main one was full. Dishwasher..yay! The owner had left us some welcoming cake and wine, and milk, tea and coffee. Perfect ! The bedrooms were lovely and comfortable, and views from the windows were great. We and our adult sons and their partners were easily able to gather around the dining table to eat, and the sitting room was comfortable- could perhaps have done with one more upholstered chair but we managed fine. The "boys" were really happy with the x box for a game one afternoon, and the dogs enjoyed playing in the gardens and on the playing fields just up the road. The village of Condover is a short walk away down the little road (Station Road) , and there is a Post office there. It is a peaceful village with a lovely church and some quaint houses. The trains on the Shrewsbury line are little (one or two carriages) and whoosh past- right next to the house but do not disturb. A couple of comments- 1. If you are not used to the countryside and do not like walking on single track roads, this would not be ideal for you. We loved it- climbing up onto the banking to avoid the odd tractor and all! The skylarks singing in the field next to the road more than made up for that! 2. The house is next to a small dog kennels/rehoming kennel. The dogs were quiet overnight, and barked a bit first thing in the morning and in the afternoon- feeding times, I'd guess. Kennel staff and walkers sometimes park near the holiday home. We visited in autumn and were glad of the central heating. Plus we have hayfever so the bare fields were a bonus- we were able to watch the farmer ploughing! I gather that crops are grown in the fields nearby, which could have affected us if we'd visited in the summer! A fantastic property with lovely owners. I would certainly recommend.

We were 8 adults, one child and one big Labrador staying for Christmas and furthermore our first Christmas together for 3 years!

From the moment we stepped into the Station House we knew that we had made a good choice. The house was decorated extensively outside and in with lovely touches such as seasonal cushions, fireguard, table centrepiece and other ornaments and a huge (real) Christmas tree. Chocolates and a bottle of bubbly were a real welcome treat! The big porch area serves as an idea place for coats and shoes, especially our walking boots. The house is very dog friendly and there are extra dog bowls and a few accessories in the utility room. A large games room gives extra space where there are plenty of board games, Lego bricks, wooden train and other toys as well as an air hockey table and a TV with Xbox. The large and well equipped kitchen was perfect for preparing our Christmas dinner and the dining room big enough for comfortably accommodate us all. Upstairs the bedrooms where comfortable and spacious and included 2 en-suite rooms. Our 4 year old grandson was very happy with the toddler bed and there were 2 additional cots in other rooms along with extra stair gates. Although we did not need them it indicates the consideration the owners have made when equipping the house, offering plenty of choice for those with young children and babies. We note from previous comments that the adjacent train track can be a disturbance, especially at night. As we were staying over Christmas (and there were train strikes) we have to say there was no problem apart for the occasional rapidly passing commuter train. If we were to note any issues it was was the lack of a good carving knife among the cutlery, also the family bathroom lock did not work properly. We had a lovely time at the Station House and it has long been known to our Grandson as the “Christmas House” it truly lived up to expectations and provided a magical Christmas for all “children” young and old!

Lovely property with everything we needed for the stay provided, but looking a little tired and needed a good clean in some places with plenty of cobwebs!

Entrance hall is very welcoming, especially when sunny, and useful for stripping off wet clothes after rain before moving into the inner hall, but loose cables could do with pinning to the wall. Living room was nice but the couches were too soft and difficult to stand up from, the entrance door was sticking, and the room could benefit from some table lamps. The main TV was only connected to wi-fi so main channels could only be reached through catch-up. Bedrooms were clean and beds comfortable, but two of the shower trays were showing signs of age and use. Lovely large kitchen with plenty of utensils, cutlery, dishes, glasses, etc, and a good large fridge. One of the small units needs repair and spoilt the overall look, but otherwise the kitchen and utility are well stocked. It was very useful to know that Sainsburys (and maybe others) deliver direct to the door. The garden was a little overgrown and in need of some maintenance, but was fully enclosed, exactly what we needed for two dogs. However, the lights outside the back door appeared not to work which made it difficult when the dogs went out late at night. The noise from the trains was certainly no issue, especially as the line was closed from the second day! And the late night goods train only provided a background rumble. With a few minor tweaks and maintenance, Station House would be restored to perfection.

Unfortunately our stay at this house was very disappointing.

It was described as a luxury house, but it was far from that. Everything was tired and dirty. We couldn’t log onto the internet and couldn’t get any of the televisions to work. In the main bathroom the toilet seat was broken and the sink was blocked. We couldn’t open the windows and there are no fans in either bathroom. There were no instruction packs for the heating or televisions, as mentioned. Meaning that the house was cold and the heating was fixed on a timer, which was no good when we were there during the day. The oven trays were dirty and when moving the settee to find the lamp switch we were disgusted with the dirt and grime we found behind it. Even though the house slept 8, there were only 4 dining chairs, so we had to bring in the tired and dirty outside chairs in so we could all sit around the table for our daughters 30th birthday meal. I tried to contact the owner whilst we were there to discuss the heating and television controls with no response. The issues with this house put the dampers on what should have been an enjoyable weekend away for our daughter’s 30th birthday celebrations. I would suggest that you remove this property from your site and that you inspect the properties periodically that you advertise on your site.
