Take a break with our dreamy Kent holiday rentals

With centuries of history, the famous white cliffs, classic seaside towns, award-winning beaches, idyllic gardens, and picturesque villages, Kent is known as the Garden of England for all of these reasons and more.

Whether you want to relax and recharge surrounded by nature, get your heart racing with walks and water sports, or peruse award-winning galleries, historic castles and family attractions, you can do it all.

To discover everything this stunning county has to offer, choose one of our Kent holiday cottages to base yourself in. At Snaptrip, we have cottages spread across the county, so you can choose the ideal holiday home in your dream location.

Why choose a Kent weekend break or staycation?

Escape to the seaside, breathe in the fresh countryside air or explore the county's vibrant market towns and cities. Whatever you're craving for your holiday, there's something for families, solo travellers, and couples alike in Kent.

Kent's 1,500-year-old history has been the inspiration for many poets, writers, and artists. You can find more than 17,000 listed buildings, including the beautiful Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Just wandering around this pretty castle makes you feel like you are part of history.

Speaking of history, add Chartwell House to your itinerary. This magnificent stately home belonged to Winston Churchill from 1922. You can see many of his personal effects such as photos, books, and art. The grounds are also lovely (and dog-friendly), and boast woodland trails, lakes, gardens, and a sweet playhouse constructed for Churchill's daughter.

No trip to Kent is complete without visiting the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. As well as seeing the cliffs in all their glory, you can walk along the cliffs, pop into the Victorian lighthouse, explore 900-year-old Dover Castle, and head underground to discover the tunnels used in WW2.

If you'd like to see more castles, Kent has them by the bucketload, with more castles and historic houses than any other county. Rochester is one of the oldest castles in the UK, dating back to the 1080s and has survived three major attacks over the centuries. Leeds Castle is often called the loveliest castle in the world. This elegant stronghold has a moat, maze, grotto, and playgrounds for little ones to burn off energy.

Kent is also home to two of the oldest cathedrals in England. Canterbury Cathedral's spectacular interior will leave your mouth open in wonder. With a history stretching back to 597 AD, medieval pilgrims were drawn to the spot where Thomas Becket was murdered. Rochester Cathedral was founded in 604 AD and recently unveiled the first fresco to be painted in an English cathedral in nearly 800 years.

Kent boasts some of the most incredible countryside in the country, with almost 7,000 km of footpaths waiting to be explored. Or, if you fancy a day at the seaside, visit Kent's varied coastline. Make your way to the sandy bays of Broadstairs, Charles Dicken's favourite place for a holiday. Joss Bay is loved for its variety of watersports and shimmering water, Viking Bay is a brilliant choice for families and splashing in the sea, or go to Whitstable or Herne Bay on the north coast to experience their diverse landscapes.

We've only scratched the surface of what to do in Kent. To experience this gem of a county for yourself, book one of our Kent self-catering properties, and enjoy everything it has to offer.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Joseph - Verified booking

The property generally was quite good but with a few problems.

      1. The wooden slats under the mattress were damaged causing the mattress to fall though them the first time I used it. I managed to patch them up temporarily. 2. The bedding was awful. All polyester- causing my wife and I to sweat profusely, made worse by the warm weather. We ended up buying a new cotton duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases. 3. The shower was excellent (one of the best I have ever used) but the shallowness of the shower tray meant I had to keep checking to see if it was overflowing. 4. Wi-Fi. Couldn't get it to work on any of our devices. Maybe it was my ineptitude. Maybe it was the complicated password which had been written with amendments added to it. Very frustrating. I gave up with it. 5. The Ninja had not been washed/cleaned prior to our arrival. There was a significant amount of oil and food residue left in it. I cleaned the inside containers myself but they were pretty grubby and needed soaking, suggesting to me they had not been cleaned properly for some time. 6. The house itself was good apart from the above niggles. The location was fantastic with easy walking access to the beach, Whitstable and Tankerton. The bus stopping outside was a real bonus allowing us to travel to Canterbury and Herne Bay. 7. Sykes. I didn't like doing business with the rental company. I thought the tone of their emails to be abrupt bordering on threatening. I was surprised by the booking fee. They charged me for a pet which I did not request. I won't book through them again.

Positives: Clean and nicely decorated, extra sofa bed if two single occupants arrive, well-stocked with equipment and mod cons.

Negatives: The picture of the garden, that is used as the primary selling point, is misleading. The last autumn's leaf fall had not been raked up, the furniture was old, tatty and falling apart. The garden has had about three years of usage since established (according to the guest book entries), and it looked like no-one was bothering to maintain it. It was a big disappointment, as we had expected to see something more well-maintained like the picture. No guestbook, and occupant information like an updated wi-fi password or local area information was clearly displayed/provided. We used a clearly displayed sign for the Wi-fi password which was out of date, battled with it for half an hour, and eventually had to go and knock on the door of the main house to ask for the information. Eventually, we found informational items tucked in behind the TV, a day later. We felt that it was a bit of an oversight to not make the location of these much clearer or to update their sign. We felt that the owners of the accommodation could have attended better to the small things, and the garden was a big disappointment.

The owners were very helpful and available when we called or texted them.

The cottage was clean. The location of the cottage is within a shared area with neighbouring cottages and hot tub and a swimming pool. The cottage was very nice for a short stay however few improvements needed. - Provide guides/instructions for the property (we didn’t notice there was a freezer at the back of the kitchen counters until the end of our trip) - The heating was not working. It was very cold the first night as we only had one electric heater. After asking the owners we noticed there was a spare fan heater. - The cottage could do with a coffee table by the sofas for when you want to watch TV and eat. - Pathways to the cottage could do with some lights as it gets very dark in the evening and it is a long walk from the entrance of the property. Having to use mobile flash light can be difficult when you have bags to carry. - We were expecting there to be basics like salt/pepper/sugar/milk but none was provided given the price we paid for the stay. However basic kitchenware provided.

Lovely cottage in a great location. Very quiet, clean and comfortable, and fully equipped with everything we needed for a two week stay over summer. Parking is easy, the owners of the cottage are very helpful, and there are lovely neighbours in the adjoining cottage. The wifi as it was a bit hit and miss & rather slow during our stay but for us this wasn’t a huge problem. There is so much to see and do within a short drive in any direction from the cottage and the owners thoughtfully provide lots of brochures and information about the local (and wider) area. It is also only about an hour by train into central London from Headcorn station (about a 15 minute drive from the cottage). We fully recommend Penhill Cottage as a place to stay.

We booked this property for a weekend break 2 friends and a dog. It's an area we were unfamiliar with but wanted to explore. We found the property, Fernwood, exceeded our expectations, it was warm, light and welcoming with a lovely outlook onto the woods behind, perfect for bird watching from the sofa and for great dog walks. The kitchen /lounge was lovely and the beds were really comfortable. The shower was great too. In fact we felt so relaxed here we didn't do as much exploring as planned. However we did enjoy a trip to the vineyard, pottering in the nearby village and loved Sissinghurst which is National Trust and a great day out. Its a place I would happily return to and visit some more National Trust properties.

    Leeds Castle
Set within 500 acres of stunning parkland, Leeds Castle is famously one of Kent’s most beautiful country estates and offers a wide range of attractions including hot air balloon trips, arts and crafts shops, a maze, an Aviary, a golf course, fine cafes and restaurants and acres of beautiful grounds and gardens.
    Dover Castle
A medieval castle founded in the 11th century making it England's longest serving fortress. It is located on the iconic white cliffs and houses 80 acres of grounds for you and your canine friend to explore.

    Tonbridge Castle

Tonbridge Castle is reputedly England’s finest example of a Motte and Bailey Castle. Boasting a splendid 13th Century Gatehouse, it is also surrounded by acres of beautiful grounds. An audio tour brings to life the rich history. Today the castle hosts open-air cinema and theatre nights during the summer.

    Upnor Castle

This attractive turreted castle is set in the picturesque village of Upnor within an area backed by rolling, wooded hills. The fort was intended to protect both the dockyard and ships of the Royal Navy anchored in the Chatham Dockyard which is a short distance downriver. It entirely failed at this task in 1667, when the Dutch sailed past it to burn or capture the English fleet at anchor.

    Rochester Castle

Strategically placed astride the London Road, guarding an important crossing of the River Medway, this imposing fortress has a complex history of destruction and rebuilding. Today it stands as a proud reminder of the history of Rochester along with the cathedral and cobbled streets.

    Stoneacre (National Trust)

Stoneacre is a Grade II* listed National Trust property in Otham, near Maidstone. It is a half-timbered yeoman farmer's house and garden dating from the 15th century, together with a small garden, orchard and meadows. Arts and Crafts scholar Aymer Vallance saved this mediaeval yeoman's house from destruction in 1920, and restored it into the charming house that it is today. Toilets and picnic benches.

    Hever Castle & Gardens

Hever Castle began as a country house built in the 13th century and was home to the Boleyn family from 1462 - 1539 including Anne Boleyn, the second queen consort of King Henry VIII. The castle fell into disrepair in the early 1900s. Much of what you see is the result of the efforts of William Waldorf Astor, who used his fortune to restore and extend the Castle in the early 20th century.

    Frequent questions

    • What is Kent best known for?

Kent, a county in southeastern England, is renowned for its iconic White Cliffs of Dover, historic Canterbury Cathedral, picturesque castles, and its designation as the "Garden of England" with its beautiful countryside and abundant orchards. Additionally, Kent holds literary significance as the setting of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and as a place where Charles Dickens resided and drew inspiration for his novels.

    • Which seaside resorts are in Kent?

Kent is home to several popular seaside resorts, including Margate, Whitstable, and Broadstairs. These coastal towns attract visitors with their sandy beaches, charming promenades, and a variety of entertainment and leisure activities.

    • Is one day enough to see Canterbury?

While one day in Canterbury can give you a glimpse of its highlights, it may not be sufficient to fully explore and appreciate everything the city has to offer. Canterbury is rich in history, with attractions like Canterbury Cathedral, St. Augustine's Abbey, and the Canterbury Tales Museum, so extending your visit to at least a couple of days would allow for a more comprehensive exploration of this historic city.

    • Which area is best to stay in Kent?

Determining the best area to stay in Kent depends on your preferences and interests. Canterbury is a popular choice due to its historical significance and central location. If you prefer coastal charm, towns like Whitstable or Margate offer a seaside experience. For a rural escape, areas such as the Kent Downs or the villages near the North Downs provide tranquility and natural beauty. Ultimately, the best area to stay in Kent will depend on the specific experiences you seek during your visit.
