What our customers say about their holidays

    • Michael - Verified booking

      A beautiful home from home.

What a fantastic week we've had at the Retreat. It is a beautifully presented cottage, with all mod cons and some really nice comforting touches like the log burner, which would be perfect for those cold winter evenings. The cottage is surrounded by amazing countryside, with wildlife literally on your doorstep. Our family dog, Cora, took a very welcoming shine to a resident sheep in the field next to the cottage. We have it in good faith from a previous guest, it is called 'baa baa blackberry' :) We had young pheasants visit us every night and it was really wonderful. On arrival we were very warmly greeted by Steve, who also offered to help us with our baggage. He gave us a brief history of the cottage and of his adjoining home, which I must say is rather beautiful (I'm jealous). Upon showing us around the cottage, there was a welcome pack of goodies for us to get us started. This was such a lovely touch indeed, and really started things off on the right foot. Steve and Dawna are the perfect hosts, left us to it and we always had a friendly hello from them every morning. The cottage is very welcoming and has all the facilities that you need. Has a small patio area which surroundings it, which is nice to sit out in on the morning as the sun rises and great for dogs too. Both bedrooms have french doors which you can open up and have a cup of tea in a bed as the birds sing. The walk in shower is lovely! As are the cosy sofa's. Overall, it is Immaculately presented throughout, we could not have been happier. The location, for us, what just about perfect! It could not have been any better. 10-15 minutes either way and you are in Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford-Upon-Avon. And the Cotswolds are no further than 30 minutes drive away, and I recommend you visit as much of that as you can. Literally everything is on your doorstop. The village itself is very quaint and peaceful, and the local pubs full of charm and serving some delicious food. We had some recommendations of places to visit from Steve, and also previous guests in the guestbook have written many places to visit and where to eat. You really are spoilt for choice, trust me. Even our dog had a fantasic time exploring all the local parks, and we had some lovely walks out at Kingsbury Waterpark also. Our holiday was perfect, and we loved the Retreat, so much so that we are looking at booking again!!

We always go with Sykes, as we have found their homes to always be of a high calibre.

Unfortunately this property was disappointing. We always look carefully at the internal photos of the houses on Sykes; as it gives us a flavour of the quality of home. However, the photos on the Sykes site are not current and are therefore misleading. The house was very cluttered with lots of random, (what I considered) unnecessary extra furniture, including a large fridge/freezer in the living room area! I would not of chosen the house if the pictures had been current, this needs rectifying immediately, to prevent any further disappointed customers. The Retreat also needs some TLC: a through clean to remove the cobwebs in the bathroom, an extraction fan in the bathroom that works, replacement of rusted soap/cream dispenser, re-sealed/varnished wood underneath bathroom sink, the tumble dryer to be fixed, the wooden floors to be polished/varnished, plates that don't 'arc' the microwave when you want to heat things up (due to decoration on rims), etc. We also found that the heating system was locked, so we were reliant upon the owners to ensure the house was warm enough. We don't go on holiday to have to hassle with what should be basic amenities in a home. On the plus side the Retreat still has potential: the lovely fitted kitchen, the bathroom tiling/spaciousness and the wooden internal doors (which were as shown on the Sykes listing photos). The location of the Retreat was also great, from the point of view of being away from the hussle and bustle of the villages, but very close to areas of interest such as Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick. However, I do not feel the property is currently anywhere near it's 4.9 'outstanding' rating (I have stayed in lots of Sykes 4-5* holiday accommodation), which will continue to lead to customers being disappointed and unhappy.

      Property not as advertised.

Lots of mould in bathroom shower and rusty soap dispenser. NO welcome package, not even 1/2 cup of milk! There were 7 teabags, some instant coffee and some sugar, that was it. Tired, torn couch in living room. No windows to open in bedroom for fresh air. Dryer not working and promised fix never happened. Signage for property extremely difficult to read in the dark and rain. Property is a considerable distance from the village, not “in” the village, it would be a 30 minute walk minimum to the actual village. Pictures online do not reflect the actual furniture, decor or grounds and the owners blamed Sykes for this. Huge additional fridge stored in the dining area, making it extremely cramped. Luggage racks would be nice. We had to buy a scrubber for dishes, and a soap dish. No shelves in shower for shampoo or soap. We had to ask for a teapot. Drawers in bedroom dresser were difficult to open. Overall a disappointing experience. Positives: Bed was comfortable. Linens were clean. Location was quiet. Owner was very pleasant and friendly. Large TV worked well.

A lovely cottage set in a quiet and beautiful location ideal for accessing the numerous attractions within a fifteen mile radius.

We received a warm welcome from owners Dawna and Steve who even offered help carrying our luggage from the car. They also left us with a much appreciated pack of starter supplies. The cottage is well equipped with integrated appliances including large fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and separate tumble dryer. There are wonderful views from every window and the surrounding garden is stocked with lovely flowers and shrubs. The Retreat is even better than the photographs depict, spotlessly clean, spacious wet room, and has a dining table which seats four as well as the large breakfast bar. Both bedrooms are a really good size with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. We have a one year old cocker spaniel who was also made very welcome in a secure environment and everything was perfect for us all with numerous safe walks on the doorstep. We really enjoyed our weeks holiday and will certainly be returning. Thank you Dawna and Steve from Keith Pauline and Toby (Norfolk)

We were very happy with the accommodation.

It was just about ok for us and our five children, especially with the brilliant outdoor space and the play area. The children had a wonderful time playing outside with the lovely views, as well as seeing the animals on the farm. The farmer was very friendly and allowed the children to come close as the lambs were being fed, which was lovely. Would highly recommend staying there, and there are loads of wonderful places to visit nearby! (Unfortunately, us adults had a more difficult time, as we had recently experienced a family bereavement at the same time as catching a nasty flu which we had for the entirety of the week - with five young children this made for an especially exhausting week! However, the accommodation was very comfortable as a place for us to recuperate, and the children had a great time in and around the place)
