Basically a very pleasant and comfortable cottage for two people set in a lovely part of the Cotswolds within easy reach of numerous attractions, but, and there is always a but, the devil is in the detail and it is in the detail that this cottage fails.

Our feeling was that the owners have rather given up. The occupancy rate is clearly rather low and the level of care and attention likewise. All of the following complaints are, in themselves minor, but they add up to making what could be a really lovely experience turn out to be a bit frustrating. The information (or perhaps instruction) booklet clearly dates from Covid and has not been updated, similarly the rack of tourist information leaflets is wildly out of date, many are dated 2018. The lighting, particularly in the living room is so poor that reading during the evening is difficult. The TV is very small and the DVD player only worked once. The instruction book did not seem to refer to the TV on the premises and the remote control did not work properly. The kitchen was quite good but the fridge was only a larder fridge without even a compartment to make a tray of ice cubes or to freeze ice packs for picnics. There is no washing machine which is unusual these days. I believe that electrical appliances should have a PAT test certificate, only one had and this was some years out of date. I also believe there should be a gas safety certificate on the premises but we couldn’t find one (forgive me if I am wrong about either of these points)

      The accommodation was fine.

However we found the lady owner unfriendly and unhelpful. Shortly after arriving I left a message on her phone requesting some salt and paper and also some kitchen roll. The photographs on your website appear to show salt and pepper on the worktop and clearly show a roll of kitchen towel – neither were in the kitchen (there was an empty kitchen roll holder). I received a curt text back thanking me for the call but saying “we are self-catering” – end of message. The duvet in the bedroom was a heavy, winter 10.5 tog and there was no alternative blanket or throw to use instead. Two tablets of dishwasher detergent were left but no detergent for the washing machine. It would have been nice to have a container for the recyclables as well as a kitchen bin for rubbish. Most establishments also provide a small amount of oil and clingfilm – again nothing. Rather than a box of chocolates being left surely more than 4 individual teabags, 4 Nescafe sachets and 4 tiny rolls of sugar would be more useful and appreciated. It was friendly of Mr Buckingham Snr to say goodbye to us on the morning of our departure. My husband enjoyed his chat.

The perfect house! From the minute we arrived at Upper End House to the minute we left, we have the most fabulous time. The house was perfect for us, there was literally nothing we needed that wasn't provided and the house has been put together thoughtfully and a lot of love. We took care of it like it was our own. The house is well planned out, the kitchen diner was perfect for gathering the family whilst dinner was prepared and we enjoyed sitting in the living room playing quizzes of an evening, as there was plenty of room fo us all ( 7 in total). My little boy was delighted with the toy box and his toys didn't get touched all week! The house was well placed for travelling around the Cotswolds, we actually went to the Cotswold Wildlife Park, Blenheim Palace and Chedworth Roman Villa, which were great as well as visiting Burford and some of the surrounding villages. It's such a beautiful part of the country! We made the most of the garden as we had lovely weather. Our only regret is that we didn't book for longer. I can't recommend this beautiful house enough, thank you.

Appin Cottage was a lovely little property in a fabulous location and was well enough equipped for a short break.

Lack of outdoor space was an issue for us as we enjoy spending time outside relaxing. There is only a (very) small area to sit which is on the road so no privacy. The cottage unfortunately was not clean when we arrived. There were dirty trays in the oven and the floor needed a good clean. 2 hoovers are provided however neither worked so I had to resort to a dustpan and brush. I wouldn't like to say how long the floors had not been cleaned but they were not good. There was also a very strong pungent smell of what we thought was mould/damp/drains as soon as we entered the cottage and remained throughout our stay. Due to the lack of a hoover, I lifted the rug to shake off outside to discover it was full of mould on the underside. There were also no starter logs provided as stated in the listing. As the cottage has a damp feel, it is quite cold so logs are necessary whatever the weather. Overall, it is a lovely little place but could do with being checked by the owners. I have already been in touch and informed them of the issues.

We arrived at Upper End after two weeks of travelling in luxury hotels so I wasn't sure how we would feel after being spoilt from serviced environments. Any reservations were quickly discarded! The house was everything and more we could ask for. Homely, restful, clean and located in a rural spot where the birds sing but 5 mins from multiple towns including Burford which has many shops, restaurants and a coop for our grocery needs. The welcome eggs, milk and small supplies were greatly appreciated after 11hrs of travel that day. Our family of 5 couldn't have felt more rested and relaxed. We spent many mornings and afternoons by the fire after a day exploring the Cotswolds. The toys and books were a delightful touch to our country retreat. Upper End house left a warm feeling in all our hearts and should we be lucky enough to return we would book Upper End again without a second thought. Thank you so much We travelled from Australia and feel blessed to have stayed. Thank you Thank you Thank you 💗
