What our customers say about their holidays

    • Laura - Verified booking

We had a lovely stay with family at this huge house in a beautiful location.

Every room was a good size, the beds were so comfortable and the number of bathrooms was ideal. The shared spaces were also of decent size which was perfect for our family getaway with a fantastic view from the kitchen and dining space. The house feels very private and the one neighbour that we did see was very friendly. The supplies in the house were handy, such as the hand soaps and washing up liquid. Unless I missed it on the description, it would have been handy to know what was provided as we came with these supplies but the kitchen is generally well equipped. The house was beautifully decorated on the inside but we didn’t feel the communal spaces were furnished to the high standards as described. We just feel a few tweaks are needed to elevate the place to what was expected. There was plenty of seating in the living room but 2 of the sofas were particularly uncomfortable as they seem to be sofa beds and the kitchen seating could do with improving as the chairs were a bit wonky and not comfy for longer periods sat there socialising. It would have been lovely if there was more outdoor seating as the decking is so big, there was only room for 4 people and the cushions in the box outside were not in a great state. The garden is a good space but unfortunately the grass needed a good cut, it was very long and not ideal when one of the guests was a sausage dog who needed drying after every visit out there. The boiler isn’t quite powerful enough for the number of bathrooms as when many of us were showering before and after hot tub use the showers were reduced to a drizzle and it was tricky to get the temperature right. We also agreed with previous comments in reviews such as the teaspoons being in short supply, some kitchen equipment such as the baking trays not being the cleanest and the decking in need of a revamp but I notice this is on the agenda for the owner as pieces are loose and it needs a good paint. We also feel that the house is being let down somewhat by the cleaning and maintenance team with some areas a bit ‘rough around the edges,’ such as more attention needing to be paid to the bottom edges of the floor to ceiling windows in the kitchen, spillages in the freezer, toilet brushes left covered in tissue, sweet wrappers being found in a bedroom drawer, cleaning cloths left in the dryer and the jacuzzi bath needing a thorough clean due to the red residue around the taps. We also noticed the upstairs toilet seats were loose and some of the hot tub jets weren’t working. These were, however, minor issues to us and didn’t affect the enjoyment of our stay. One issue we did have that did bother us more so was the bad smell of the hot tub on the Sunday morning. It had a strong chlorine smell when we arrived on the Friday evening and we only used it for perhaps 30 minutes as it was late, we used it again for no longer than an hour on the Saturday due to bad weather, following the proper usage instructions each time. Come Sunday morning, when we took the cover off it had a nasty stagnant water smell. We rang Sykes who put us through to maintenance but we were told it had been prepared properly, it should last a week and so therefore must be something we’d done and we would be charged if someone came out. It was a disappointing response given we’d paid £250 for it over a 3 night stay. With a short time of use and following the instructions, I’m not sure what we could have done to avoid this. We put up with the smell to use it on the Sunday, although for not as long as we would have liked, it was a good job we weren’t staying any longer as there was no way you could put up with the smell for a week! This was such a shame as the the hot tub itself is a good size in a perfect location. It was lovely relaxing out there with the beautiful views. Just a further suggestion, as the hot tub and bond was a separate payment, it would be really useful to get a confirmation of payment received for these. I rang up to check we were down for the hot tub as didn’t want to risk arriving to find our payment may have been missed and a slight panic was caused the day we were arriving when we were told the owner hadn’t received our good house keeping bond. We had provided the booking reference on the bond payment but a different member of our party paid it who therefore had a different name so we think this may be why it was missed. I hope our feedback is constructive. All in all, it was an enjoyable stay. We would definitely recommend the property, more so if the required attention was paid to the areas where it’s needed as it’s such a lovely place to be.

We had a fabulous time at Talgais for the May Day weekend.

The house was plenty big enough with 6 bedrooms and enough bathrooms for our party of 11. We enjoyed celebrating my 70th Birthday and our upcoming 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary. Beautiful lounge area which we didn’t use much as we couldn’t resist the fabulous kitchen/dining area with the wonderful views of Dinas Brân. The beds mattresses duvets pillows were very comfy and good quality the towels were of good quality also very pleased. Kitchen… wash up liquid, cleaning items, starter t bags sugar coffee biscuits liquid soaps in all bathrooms and toilet a nice touch. Great dishwasher, washer, dryer, microwave, toaster, oven and hob. Plenty of crockery and cutlery. 15-25 minute (depending on your ability) walk into beautiful Llangollen. Nice pub/restaurants and shops. Shame we couldn’t pre book the canal aqueduct trip so we may have to return to do this. The younger members in our party walked up to Dinas Brân they loved it! Fabulous views from up there. The older ones met them in Llangollen when they descended. We did have some issues: On arrival found the front of house/porch a little shabby. The downstairs bathroom toilet was dirty on arrival. The “clean for you” tape was on the floor the lid was up and in the toilet bowl was soiled toilet paper (brown) I quickly took a photo (which I can forward to you if requested) and then flushed. Couldn’t believe that we could only find 2 teaspoons!!! We searched to no avail. 2 glass Wine glasses only!!! Not good as we had occasions to celebrate so we used Gin glasses and Plastic ones (yuk!!!) Grill in cupboard dirty not usable. Some of the lights didn’t work in the dining area. The Hive control was easy to raise the heating temperature but 1 radiator in dining area, 1 in master upstairs bedroom and the one in double bedroom upstairs did not work. The Decking area is in a very bad condition and needs a lot of attention. BBQ not nice… dirty so we didn’t use. The conservatory (once we found the key) was found to be quite dirty and old cobwebs on windows and broken toys we’re glad our grandchildren are older. No bath/shower mats available (we would have taken our own if we had known this) the 3 elder members in our party including myself found the areas very slippy. The plumbing/heating needs some attention as the upstairs radiators took sometime to heat up on arrival. The upstairs bathroom shower went hot to cold and only worked well if nothing else was in use in the house. The toilet in upstairs bathroom filled almost to the brim on first flush and so it was “plunged” with the toilet brush and was fine after that so must have been blocked. The master bedroom bathroom upstairs had a few issues: Took an age to part fill the double jacuzzi bath (which our grandchildren wanted to try) but the jets were not very good and they soon got out and back into the Hot Tub. The Shower! This was not usable for us… we could not adjust - it was scalding hot or cold! Same with the hand held hose and without a mat very slippy with only a small flat area by the head rests to stand in. The double sinks? The left one took an age to let the water out and the right one was unusable to wash in as the plug would not stay down. ( We had to use the family bathroom) Some of the windows (upstairs) the seals have broken down so wet and misty need replacing. Dining area was well used by us all with such a fabulous view of Dinas Brân but the chairs are very creaky and wonky and not very comfy needs better seating we had to use cushions from lounge for the backs of the chairs. The dishwasher and washer and dryer were great to use thank you. Even with all the little faults… we would definitely return to Talgais and be most happy to book with Sykes Cottages again. It was fabulous for the young and the old. We had a great time and made some very precious memories for us all to treasure. Thank you.

We had a three day long weekend at Talgais Friday to Monday, 7 adults, 6 children plus dog.

The house was an excellent size with plenty of space for all. We had only been there four hours when unfortunately there was a power cut which wasn’t restored until the following late afternoon. It was cold of course but as it was 10 at night we all went to bed. Luckily the hob was gas and we were able to make hot drinks. There were unfortunately no candles or torches on the property, we had to use our mobile phone torches, which the children turned into a game. The following morning although very cold we got on with it and went out walking. No phone signals all day, when eventually phone could be used I spoke with Sykes Cottages who were very helpful and contacted the owner for me, whilst not available to bring torches or candles, I have made the suggestion in the unlikely event this happened again, it would be helpful to store some at the property. Power was eventually restored and the rest of the weekend was spent enjoying our break especially the hot tub which was glorious and the surrounding area is beautiful. The views are lovely from the back of the house. My only criticism of the house is there is no lighting at the front of the property, the porch appears to have lights but they weren’t working, it was very dark unloading cars when we arrived. Also there are various radiators which do not heat up, I assume they need air releasing form them and the outside paintwork needs refreshing. I feel the summer house could be utilised - on the booking site it shows children’s games and computer in there, however it was just an empty room and the children were disappointed the trampoline has been removed. I assume there are reasons for this. Aside from this minor points, I would definitely recommend this property for a large family break. We had a great time as a family despite the unexpected power cut. Thank you to Sykes when we finally got through to the. Excellent customer service.

Our much looked forward Christmas break at this cottage was disappointing to say the least.

First impressions were good, nice views and cosy log burner. However, there were two main and significant problems. The TV didn't work properly so we were unable to watch any of the planned tv programmes we had been looking forward to. The screen kept displaying an error message which said 'weak or no signal, check your aerial and connection'. After contacting the host, he replied that the WiFi speeds were OK, but that the aerial may have been affected by a previous storm, and there was nothing he could do. All channels had the same problem. The biggest problem for us is that it took hours to cook our Christmas dinner. Even to pre heat the oven was a trial in itself, and it took hours to produce our meal. The owner's response was that it only runs on a 13amp fuse and isn't connected to a main wire so isn't as hot or powerful as a normal oven. In fact you can only use one shelf at a time! Surely this should be made clear at the outset and in the description of the cottage prior to booking. I don't think this cottage is fit for purpose for a Christmas break. The cottage was originally part of the owners house, which they sectioned off to make a stand alone cottage for holiday lets. Also , I would agree with other comments from previous guest reviews and an entry in the guest book which mentions that their child took a nasty fall, that the stairs are extremely steep, and I feel that this should also be mentioned in the description, since this could be a big problem for some guests. There is also a mini fan heater in the cupboard of the main bedroom which lacks a safety cut out function. So whilst I appreciate the gesture of biscuits and a Christmas card on arrival, I would much prefer to have had a good Christmas meal and a tv that worked.

Talgais was a lovely large house with great views.

The house was clean and there were plenty of nice white towels. Our group all slept well and the bedding was also clean with well presented rooms. However with the exception of the main bedroom there was a lack of storage space with only a hanging rail in in the double room downstairs, the other rooms had a small chest of drawers. The kitchen cupboards would benefit from a good clear out as there was many half empty jars and out of date items just left from previous occupants which didn’t give a good impression. We struggled with the lack of large serving dishes and had to buy 8 wine glasses as what was provided was inadequate. The garden was large and the children enjoyed the swings and trampoline but once again there were broken items lying around which should be cleared away. The hot tub was enjoyed by everyone. The large spa bath in the main bedroom looked inviting and after filling it up (which takes a while) we discovered that the jets didn’t work so unless it’s fixed don’t waste your time or water using it. We had a lovely week and it is a really nice house but does need some tweaks.
