If you if you need a pet friendly option for you and your pampered pooch you're bound to find what you're looking for in Derbyshire.

Things to do on a Derbyshire cottage holiday

Predominantly a rural region, Derbyshire encompasses a large part of the Peak District, a stunning National Park that's characterised by rugged uplands and moorland, such as Kinder Scout. The area feels very remote and is the ideal spot for an adventure. There are lots of ways to explore the Peak District hiking, cycling and even on horseback. Stay in one of many pet-friendly holiday cottages in Derbyshire and your favourite friend can even come along with you.

Scattered throughout Derbyshire's rolling hills, you'll find lots of historic and picturesque towns and villages. Bakewell, for instance, is considered to be one of the finest towns in England and, yes, it is the birthplace of the Bakewell tart! If you're looking for something livelier, the city of Derby lies along the river Derwent and is awash with museums, galleries, and a magnificent Gothic cathedral.

Derbyshire is less touristy than somewhere like Cornwall or the nearby Lake District. But it's definitely worth exploring if you want a holiday to remember. The sheer number and quality of holiday cottages in Derbyshire makes this pretty part of the UK ideal for unforgettable family trips or romantic getaways.

Encompassing swathes of the Peak District, Derbyshire is a top place to stay. With luxury cottages on offer you can enjoy your next staycation in style. Whether it's as a romantic retreat or a family getaway, there will be a place for you in this lovely county.

The Peak District is, of course, a popular place to go in this county. With plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling, as well as stunning views; it's easy to see why. However, this isn't the only attraction of Derbyshire. Both in and out of the National park there are numerous pretty towns and villages in which to enjoy a luxury cottage holiday. It's just the place to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • James - Verified booking

Just returned from a 2 day stay.

The cottage is basically OK but had some serious maintenance issues that ruined our stay: The boiler broke down on our first day so we had not heating or hot water. We ended up having to walk across a courtyard to another empty cottage to use a single bathroom rather than having two ensuites that we'd paid for. We reported that at 8am and it wasn't fixed until 5pm (after we chased again at 4:30pm) and it seemed that there is no emergency policy in place for 24/7 boiler/maintenance cover. The person we spoke to was not exactly sympathetic and it felt like we were an inconvenience, not a customer. Looking at feedback, it's not a new problem. We thought that was the end of it, but later that evening the electricity tripped and we lost use of all sockets and the kitchen. So, again we had to go over to the other (rather musty smelling) cottage to use the kitchen to cook dinner. At least the lights and heating stayed on! The owner did promise to give us a refund, which is good, although in all honesty just a bit more empathy would have gone a long way. She said that we'd have to apply to Sykes Cottages (via this form) to get the refund. Something else I didn't report at the time - there is obviously a rodent problem (although we didn't see any). There are mouse poison dispensers everywhere (outside and inside the property) to prevent this becoming an issue. However, it will be very easy for mice to get into the property as there is nearly an inch gap, for the full length under the front door! Presence of mice is normal out in the country, but what concerned me was that the poison dispensers in the front courtyard had not be loaded properly and I found my dog licking a poison block. Fortunately I saw this as soon as she had found it and she's fine, but these really should be pet proof! All in all this was a pretty poor experience, which is a shame as with a little bit of an upgrade (e.g. fixed heating system, new sofas) and better customer focus (e.g. providing a welcome pack with a pint of milk and providing better instructions to get there as the satnav postcode given takes you to the wrong place) it could be quite nice.

We had a lovely week at Ivy Dene. The house was 2 houses at one point and has been joined together but keeps the unused second front door, so is bigger than you'd expect. Lovely for family life with teens to have the extra sitting room and also 2 places to eat. Very comfortable, with everything you need (probably the most well equipped kitchen we've ever found in a holiday cottages, including plastic cutlery and plates, and good, sharp kitchen knives - makes such a difference!). Crich rec is opposite the cottage with a play park and space to kick a ball, and we did some walks from Crich. Also recommend the Greyhound pub and Crawford Mill (the pub in Crich doesn't currently do evening meals). Nottingham Castle is great, lots of interactive displays and a play park (for under 12s). Fave walk, Lathkill Dale near Bakewell, absolutely stunning. A really comfortable and enjoyable week away, made by having such a pleasant base to return to. Loved sitting out in the pretty garden too.

Beautiful and cosy little cottage in a lovely quiet village close to lots of places to visit and a perfect base for exploring the area. Owner and everyone in the village were friendly and helpful. Private garden to front was well used and lots of walks to be had from the front door. Smart TV and wifi worked well with half decent mobile signal. Kitchen well supplied and a cake and brew making gear provided on arrival and very welcome. Double bed was super comfy and shower nice and powerful. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth and plenty of other spots 15-20mins drive with great range of supermarkets, cafes and pubs. Highly recommend Chatsworth gardens for a day out and Ilam Hall was lovely. Lots of prehistoric sites in the area, Nine Sisters, Minninglow, Arbor Low and great photos to be had from Chrome Hill near Langnor. All in a great holiday for man and dog and would be happy to come back.

The four of us, plus dog, enjoyed a lovely Christmas week at Ivy Dene. The house was cosy and warm upon going through the door, and very tastefully decorated with a beautiful tree aside the bay view window of the sitting room. There was lots of space, the house if a characterful solid construction and despite being in the heart of Crich, it was perfectly peaceful. Loved the kitchen which was well provided for in terms of pans, crockery and equipment such that nothing was lacking and the quality of everything was good too. Lots of walking to be had from the doorstep, even if it is wet and muddy, there are lots of quiet lanes for miles. The local pub, Indian restaurant and fish bar were all super and reached by foot within a minute, as was a pleasant artisanal bakery. We loved our stay and hope to return to try the experience during a summer next.

Lovely cottage in an ideal location to explore the local area.

The pool and games room were the reason we booked here and we are glad we did. The pool was warm and private and despite being shared we had it to ourselves at times. The games tables were excellent for the children too and they have now taken a keen interest in table tennis! Lovely big field ideal for my dogs in the morning. The cottage was very comfortable with all the accessories you needed. Beds were the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept on whilst on holiday. The cottage was very clean and the area was quiet. The welcome items were much appreciated and having the washing up liquid was a plus - an antibacterial spray would have been handy too. The heating was excellent - so warm and toasty - especially the underfloor heating in the bathrooms. Overall a lovely relaxing short break and we are looking to book again later on in the year.
