What our customers say about their holidays

    • Elaine - Verified booking

My family used to have caravans in Southerness for 20+ years in the Lighthouse Leisure site so spent my childhood there every weekend and holidays, lots of happy memories, but when my dad became terminal gave van up so hadn't been back for 20 years.

I was shocked at how close the vans are in all the sites now, far too close. After being housebound for 3 years after breaking my back and covid lockdown living alone I really needed to get back out into the world but my confidence took a humdinger of a battering so I thought go back to Southerness but I wanted a peace and quiet too so not in a caravan in a busy noisy site so thought a private cottage and came across Sykes where I chose Wigwam because I knew the family had good taste because they've got 2 of the same pictures I have lol The Sykes internet booking experience I admit I had trouble with trying to pay for it because the part that sends you to your bank site to acknowledge you're paying they send you a code to type in then continue on to finalise but instead kept taking me back to start of booking process and after 6 times I gave up but unfortunately staff aren't allowed to take over the phone payments so had to wait until I was on another device for it to go through. The Wigwam itself is an amazing place with beautiful decor throughout every bit reminding you that you are on holiday by the sea. The views overlooking the beach from the 'a little sand between your toes takes away your woes' bedroom (sure as heck does btw) and the single bedroom and the whole of the living room windows look out onto the beach and the 2nd double bedroom even although overlooking the back of the site complex it was still quiet. Wigwam has all mod cons kitchen, dining area and living area, bedrooms and bathroom which admittedly I was a bit worried about with my mobility issues walk with crutches, have a wetroom and seat at home, but I still managed in and out of bath holding on to sink and towel rails. Overall an exceptional home, holiday which brought back plenty of happy memories and aye a wee bit teary bits too from start on the bus going turning into the Southerness road knowing all the times we went down 'the tickly hill' (kind of big dipper tickly tummy feeling like you get on the big dipper when dad put foot down on that bit for 20 years lol) but first time dad not there. I'll definitely be back.

Barnacle Cottage is a lovely cottage based on RSPB Mersehead. This is a great location if you are interested in nature or want complete peace and quiet. That said, the reserve is open to the public so you do have people driving and walking past your window and outdoor seating area. Being able to walk round the reserve late evening or early morning is a real bonus. However, if you are just looking for a base to explore the area I would suggest looking somewhere with more amenities. This cottage is nowhere near a shop, pub, etc. unless you want to drive. I had stayed previously and improvements have been made since then. However, I personally feel the cottage falls short of the standard you would expect for the price. Whilst generally clean, I think many people would feel the need to do further cleaning before being able to settle. I washed all crockery and cutlery I needed before using it as some items were far from fully washed. The cottage is well equipped but everything needs a good sort out. Overall the standard is good but there is a lack of attention to details. So 4* from me because I am a birdwatcher and love staying on a reserve but I would not recommended it to my non-birdwatching friends given the cost of renting.

Very good. We enjoyed staying in this very stylish cottage.

The owners live next door and they were always helpful, there to show us round the cottage and give us a lesson on the wood-burner stove, after that they always respected our privacy- perfect. 2 mins walk to the co-op, by far the best food shop in Langholm. Unusually, we had a double/king size bed each as they are link-lock so can be unlinked to give 4 beds. Upstairs, I found earplugs useful as there were a lot of trucks on the A9 early morning (though the sound insulation was good, the A9 is near). The central heating can only be adjusted by the owners but we didn't have to ask as the sun shone through the lounge windows and the basket of wood provided in the cost was more than we used all week. Marvellous base for walking and our hosts were experts in the walking, providing excellent info. in the cottage and whenever we had a chat about our walks when we met them.

We have just had a very comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay at Stables Cottage.

After a long drive negotiating the bank holiday traffic and the M6 hold-ups, we arrived very late at night, but Leila still gave us a warm and friendly welcome. It was so good to see milk waiting in the fridge for a much needed up of tea, amongst other welcome treats. The cottage is lovely and spacious, with a mix of modern and traditional decor and the beds were super comfy. The garden was lovely to sit in in the sunshine and the area itself is very scenic and quiet. We used the cottage as a base for day trips out in the car and the information folder was full of interesting information about the area. The Co-op is very handy across the road too. Thank you Leila, we loved our mini break and definitely recommend your cottage for a home from home stay.
