What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

I have been wondering whether or not to leave this review, but on reflection, have decided this could ruin someone's holiday if they were to book here. Check in was straight forward and the gentleman who keeps the key is nice and helpful. The house, however, wasn't clean. I was informed I was the first person to stay here this year, and I hope the owner makes changes before too many more come to stay. The house is in desperate need of some updating. There is too much furniture in the house and this makes it cluttered, a lot of the furniture is old and dirty. The bed sheets were old and stained also. The carpets deteriorated. The worst issue though, was the mouse droppings all over the house and general cleanliness. Mostly in the kitchen, I didn't feel like I could safely cook a meal without having to clean absolutely everything. I contacted the caretaker, and he was very helpful. He brought the traps and bait I had asked for and I set them. Nothing was caught which told me that perhaps the house just wasn't cleaned properly since the winter. I asked him to arrange for the cleaners to come, which he did, and they came the next day. When I returned to the property, the same mouse droppings were still there, some spots he mentioned specifically to the cleaner were the droppings on the kitchen floor. It hadn't been cleaned very well at all, even though a note was left by them. In the end, I gave up and emptied the hoover and gave the whole house a going over myself. I washed the minimal stuff I needed to, so I could have some cereal for breakfast and a coffee but looking at the worktops and the rest of the kitchen, I decided it was easier not to cook. I ate out every night and had take away. There is a loud noise and banging outside the bedroom window from some structure on the roof of the Co-op next door. This has been previously mentioned apparently and was supposed to have been dealt with but if its windy, it can be very noisy throughout the night. I have photos and videos of the mouse droppings, but I won't add them. I have sent some to the caretaker. I left the house earlier than I was booked to stay until as my plans had changed and to be honest, I didn’t want to stay any longer than I had to. I hope they used that extra time with it vacant to make some improvements to the cleanliness of the house. In hindsight, I should have asked for a refund and looked into hotels in the area, but it was a busy time of year with the Easter holidays and accommodation was difficult to find at the time.

We loved the apartment: beautiful, elegant, and comfortable, showing its origins as a grand house, and wonderfully spacious. (We had cupboard envy!) It's self-contained, and the boot-room lobby in the entrance downstairs meant we could leave all our muddy and sandy things well out of the way. David had obviously put considerable thought into everything one might need, for everyday living and for recreation. (The family bookshelf offered a snapshot of classics for every age, including a duplicate set of 'Tin-Tin'.) The kitchen was excellent, and well-equipped, though I was glad to have a tall companion, to extract large, heavy, crockery, out of high shelves. Perhaps adding few smaller mugs would be helpful? A large and useful fridge was great for self-catering. All spotless, making me worry a little about spoiling the carpet, under the dining-table; again, perhaps a large rug there might avert risk? Views, gardens, and little balcony were lovely, and the walk to the sea a delight. It was a treat to be able to walk in the whole lower garden, with its old plantings, and visits from wild life. Thank you!

Stroan cottage was fantastic. it was immaculate and beautifully presented with super modern bathrooms, a lovely open plan living space and decent sized bedrooms. The wood burner meant that it was a lovely and cosy place to relax in the evening. I had a dog with me and the park just over the road was perfect, given that the cottage does not have its own garden. and the people I met on there with their dogs were really friendly. As a woman staying there on my own, I felt very safe and comfortable. The kitchen had pretty much EVERYTHING you could want on a stay away from home EXCEPT any kind of coffee machine. I had hoped that there would at least be a cafetiere for my morning coffee, but couldn't find one, which I was surprised at given how well kitted out the whole place was otherwise. Would highly recommend for anything from 1 to 4 people. Lovely place to explore from.

We were unable to take our holiday and offered it to our niece, Stephanie and her partner Harry.

We advised Sykes who were happy with the transfer at no extra cost, while we remained responsible for the holiday. Stephanie and Harry loved it and this is what they said: Key points: - Lovely accommodation. Spacious, airy, and spotlessly clean. - Shower is amazing! Again, spacious and very clean. Lovely deep bath. - Very quiet, peaceful location less than 10mins walk from the town centre and less than 10mins walk from the waterside. - Surrounded by gorgeous countryside and walks/beaches you can reach in 20mins in the car. - Wigtown centre is very nice, unexpectedly amazing array of hand make cakes! - The owners are super helpful, very approachable and keen to share great tips for places to visit. - The owners left nice little touches for us, a bottle of wine, some disposable slippers. Lent us some sun chairs to use as well.

Holiday originally booked for March 2020!

! We finally arrived this year and we were not disappointed. Accommodation was lovely, clean, spacious and everything you need to have a relaxing holiday. Friendly welcome when we arrived and thank you for our welcome treats. Location good for walks locally. Plenty of places to explore and visit including lots of forest walks. Portpatrick, Isle of Whithorn, Mull of Galloway and Port William are just a few of the places we visited. The areas and scenery are just stunning!! The Steam Packet Inn at Isle of Whithorn is well worth a visit for both a drink or food. The Bladnoch Inn which is walkable from Hillcrest House good for Sunday Carvery. All in all a good holiday and we were really lucky with the weather. Would highly recommend and hope to return one day.
