What our customers say about their holidays

    • Julia - Verified booking

We had a very disappointing stay at Rose Cottage.

The property itself has fabulous potential, lovely size and location. Access is very narrow but we knew this from previous reviews. The main issue was how dirty and run down the property was. There were also safety issues with low windows with no child lock restrictions ( when we arrived windows were wide open and low level and we were not warned and children had gone upstairs to find their bedrooms) also every window has blinds with no safety latches for the cords. Not acceptable for a cottage advertised as for families. When we got to the property and started to unpack we noticed stains on carpets, stains on the table cloth and sticky patches, crumbs etc on counter, mould and hairs in bathroom, stains in bath, dust in all cupboards etc. I then checked the bedding and found hairs, bits and even what appeared to be dog biscuits inside a pillowcase in second bedroom! Did not feel the bedding was clean or the cottage. In order to try and enjoy our holiday and how late it was now getting we bought all new bedding and cleaning products from Tesco as well as throws for sofa (dirty and musty smelling) as well as an air freshener as there was particularly unpleasant smell upstairs. Upon returning home we contacted the owner as we were aware they used a cleaner and caretaker to look after the cottage to make them aware and advise they should visit to see how bad it is. They were very dismissive and simply said it was a shame we had not advised them whilst staying. We did not contact whilst on holiday as their cleaner was clearly not up to the job and the issues were not minor and easily resolved. Furthermore we did not wish to waste our holiday waiting in for caretakers or cleaners and would not leave our possessions without us there. Why should we be penalised for their negligence? I emailed the owner a second time and never got a response. Also the backdoor is broken (does not open) and there is a dangerous shaver socket below the sink in main bathroom. Overall would not return and would not recommend until owner resolves safety issues and gives a deep clean.

The cottage was generally as described and a great location for visiting local towns etc.

Given the current C19 pandemic and the extra cleaning that we were expecting to have been done we were disappointed with what we found, there were issues relating to the property that should be addressed: Lounge - the central heating radiator didn't work at all, there was a small oil filled radiator at the other end of the room not sure if this was supposed to be in addition to the CH system or extra. We propped open the dining room door and this allowed the heat from there to circulate into the lounge. There weren't cables from each of the TV boxes to the TV and no instructions. A small bin would have been useful. Dining room - very comfortable and homely. Kitchen - when we arrived all the crockery, glasses, cutlery etc. had a dusty/gritty residue as the dishwasher didn't seem to be able to rinse properly - probably needs a good clean. Some of the cupboard door were dirty with grease and finger marks. The non-stick cooking trays has burned on residue from previous use which was easy enough to wash off but should not be for us to do on arrival. Bedrooms - the double bed made us roll toward the middle, it wasn't until the last morning we discovered that the longitudinal bar underneath supporting the middle was in fact toward one side. As a result of this one of us slept in the twin room where the bed was in fact very comfortable, but not what we had wanted. Bathroom - the shower screen was very dirty with limescale and has obviously not been cleaned for many months.

Rose Cottage was a very happy experience for us.

A lovely and well-appointed cottage (truly with lovely Roses to greet us!) Arrival was most happy, with many thoughtful instructions from the owner and great assistance from the owners when the boiler needed a reboot. The surrounding region is wonderful for day-trips, and we enjoyed Charmouth & Sidmouth in particular. Some thoughts for future guests: a) The listing is quite accurate that the laneway access to the private drive is very (VERY!) narrow. It. might help guests to suggest that a larger vehicle (like we had) would be very difficult to navigate into the parking spot....especially if it is a nighttime arrival (as was ours). b) the mattresses could do with a refresh - the middle bedroom has a bed with a metal frame that provides only a moderately comfortable rest. The small single bedroom, could definitely use a mattress refresh. c) The garden was lush, yet could do with a cut-back, so that guests could easily use the picnic bench and single bench - the greenery was all-round those seating areas. Otherwise, it was a fine and restful week at Rose Cottage and we will certainly be booking it again in the future!

Cottage was great apart from a few niggles: 1).

Lack of a full-size bath. I appreciate the bathroom has been made out of the original master, which restricts the space available but placing the toilet next to the sink (i.e. ditch the cupboard between) would have allowed room for a corner bath. 2). As explained in a phone conversation to the owners, the mixer tap on the bath / shower was stuck on very hot and the plastic release switch doesn't work. 3). The cottage description hints that access / parking is tight but it really is VERY tight. I was just about okay with my Vauxhall Insignia but, should anyone book the cottage with a slightly wider vehicle, they are going to have real problems getting in and out. I think this could be made clearer in the description, because I don't think clients with large vehicles are going to be very pleased if they have to park in a nearby road and haul all of their stuff round there by hand. 4). The large cooker extractor hood - I banged my head on it several times, it is too big and sticks out too far into the kitchen. Apart from that all was great, thanks.

Really looking forward to our long awaited holiday.

At first glance were impressed. We went into the Kitchen then the Bathroom and so shocked at the very poor cleanliness of both rooms. We did not expect to come away on holiday to clean our holiday let to a standard to which you claim to make in this covid era. some of the appliances in the Kitchen ie the fridgefreezer, had mould and food debris around the door seals and also the microwave is rusty inside the cooking compartment. We did not cook in the kitchen as it is not my place to completly clean the kitchen. We could go on but there isnt enough space. We had to completely clean the Bathroom, the shower door was so dirty you couldnt see through it due soap scum and lime stains. It looked as though it hadnt been cleaned for a long while. On top of this 3 of the venetian blinds where broken, the one in the main bedroom could not be closed properly so no privacy. Wardrobe in main Bedroom smelled very unpleasent so did not use it. also not safe as my husband went to open it, it fell on him. The doublebed in the main bedroom was awful
