Guests say

St Margaret's Cottage in Chard, Somerset, is a quaint and cosy property praised for its excellent location as a base for exploring the West Country. Guests appreciate its well-equipped nature and the tranquillity of the surrounding area. While some guests encountered issues with cleanliness and maintenance, others found it to be a comfortable home from home, highlighting the effective communication from the owners.

Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with some guests finding the cottage to be below expected standards, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom, while others reported it as very clean. The inconsistency leads to a slightly above average score.

The cottage's location is highly praised for being quiet and tranquil, as well as an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions in Somerset, Dorset, and Devon. The narrow access lane is noted, but it does not significantly detract from the overall positive feedback.

Comfort receives positive remarks for the cosy atmosphere and homely feel. However, some guests mentioned issues with the beds and bumped heads due to low doorways, which suggests room for improvement.

Facilities are generally well-received, with the cottage being described as well-equipped. Nonetheless, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as problematic appliances and parking challenges, leading to a score that reflects the need for attention in these areas.

There is insufficient information regarding the presence of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. As such, this category cannot be scored.

About this property

A charming, semi-detached cottage, dating back to 1880, tucked away down a little single-track lane within the South Somerset village of Tatworth. The village is also known as South Chard and is just three miles from the town of Chard itself, near the borders of both Dorset and Devon. This lovely period cottage has been renovated to an extremely good standard, offering a delightfully comfortable home-from-home in Somerset. It has two bedrooms with windows overlooking the adjacent little lane, a bathroom where you can enjoy a soak after a long day outside, and a well-equipped, narrow galley kitchen, access from the dining room down two steps.

The dining room has a warming, woodburner-style gas fire and a TV, meaning it can double up as a social space once dinner is over. The cosy sitting room has stairs to the first floor and features a warming open fire providing a further place for your group to socialise. Outside, there's a small private sitting area at the front and a private courtyard at the rear of the cottage, beside the little lane. When the sun is shining, you can sit out here with a book, or enjoy refreshments whilst you discuss your day’s activities. Close by are lovely rural walks to explore, whilst a short drive takes you into the nearby town of Chard, which offers an interesting selection of shops, pubs and restaurants.

There are several historic houses and beautiful gardens to visit within an easy drive, including Barrington Court, Forde Abbey and Montecute House. Alternatively take the route south to the market town of Axminster, or take your buckets and spades and enjoy a fresh fish supper at the charming seaside resort of Lyme Regis. Not great. Grubby in places (cutlery, chopping boards dirty/smelly, dirty shower screen, taps, blinds). Only one of the two singles was made up, yet advertised sleeping for four. Lack of privacy in lounge - no curtain/blind over glass door looking in. Broadband feed is shared by ethernet with neighbouring property, causing speed issues and security concerns. Advertised as with garden/patio but is shared access with another property, tiny so unusable. Parking tight, but fine for our small Fabia. Double bed is metal-framed both ends, felt hemmed-in. Both bumped our heads going into the kitchen. Had to replace batteries in two remote controls. Batteries dead in two out of the three clock. Chard and Tamworth are a good base for exploring south Somerset, Dorset and Devon.

The cottage felt warm and cosy, and appeared in good order. It's location is excellent for exploring, suitable for both young and old, the many attractions which are located within a 30 mile radius. The only downside, which obviously the owners have no control over, is the access by car. The cottage is on a lane which is very narrow and twisty, and provides a challenging drive, especially if you have a large car.

Parking is particularly tight but we made it work. Steps are a bit steep for very little ones but a lovely cottage, great location and surprisingly big. Very much enjoyed our stay!
