What our customers say about their holidays

    • Kev - Verified booking

REVIEW OF Y FELIN COTTAGE, CARDIGAN WALES MAY 2023 Overall Summary: We stayed at Y Felin for 7 nights in May 2023.

This was our second cottage holiday with our adopted rescue dog. She is highly reactive to many situations, so we booked Y Felin as it was quite secluded and out of the way - and it catered for dogs! (Although, for us, with a reactive, dog the fence surrounding the side of the garden was not particularly high and we had to keep our dog on a lead whilst she was outside….just in case !!) It proved to be a great base from which to explore the Cardigan area of Wales and, at a pinch, you could probably walk into Cardigan but, unfortunately, that wasn’t an option for us. The cottage itself is set on the roadside in a small hamlet and has a peaceful secluded garden with views over open countryside and woodland. The garden housed the hot tub which we hadn’t had in any of our previous holiday cottages Surprisingly for us, it turned out to be a great place (and regular way) of relaxing at the end of each day following our exploration of the local beaches. It was a nice option to have. With secure parking for at least 2 cars, it’s only minutes from the main road (and a couple of large supermarkets) up a short, single track, lane. There is minimal passing traffic. The property itself is very well furnished and homely and has pretty much everything that guests could need. Open plan in layout and decorated and furnished in a traditional style it had a couple of sofas, a small armchair and a 6-seater dining table inside, a picnic table and a table with 6 chairs on the small patio outside, together with a well-equipped kitchen. We also found that the small utility room that housed the oil-fired boiler and the freezer was an ideal spot for drying out our damp clothing and footwear at the end of each day. The log burner in the lounge area looked very homely and a good supply of logs was supplied, but there was no need for us to use it during our stay. It has 3 bedrooms and a bathroom. That said, one of the bedrooms was more of a converted garden room with French doors leading out into the garden (It had 2 single beds in it but no wardrobe space). The double bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable. Ffion was a good host and, as she lives just up the road, was always on hand to sort out any issues which occurred during our stay quickly – and to our satisfaction. If you want a base to stay in when you’re visiting this part of Cardigan then Y Felin could be for you. That said we did feel that there were some areas that looked a little tired and where a lack of attention to detail let the cottage down a little. For us, these were: • A layer of dust in some areas. (Granted, the cottage had been empty the week before we arrived but we would have expected that to be picked up in a check before our arrival). • There were only 11 coat hangers supplied for the 3 bedrooms (and potentially 6 people). • The kitchen was well equipped but with most of the cupboard and drawer space being taken up with kitchen equipment, crockery and utensils there was very little space to store groceries etc. • No washing or dishwasher tablets were supplied. We do understand that this might not be a problem for some people but it would be a nice touch for the time we were there (and save having to buy a large pack of both from the supermarket). • There was no handwash or soap supplied in the bathroom. • One of the dog bowls supplied was dirty and clearly hadn’t been washed since the last visitors had used it. • The clothes airer supplied was old and broken. • The doors into and out of the garden bedroom were sticking and very difficult to open. • The key to the French doors out into the garden was missing. • One of the 2 light bulbs in the cooker hood was missing. • The shower head and the towel rail in the bathroom were showing signs of wear and corrosion. • The toilet pan was not secured to the bathroom floor so moved slightly when you sat on it ! • The barbeque was a little old and tired as was the table and chairs on the patio. • The provision of a small “Welcome pack” would be a nice touch. It would be a great way to showcase some of the local produce and wouldn’t cost much to put together. (That said, if the cost was an issue then it could easily be added to the fees for hiring the cottage- and go pretty much unnoticed). We have to say that none of these issues had a significant impact on our holiday but most (if not all) of them could be easily remedied and help create a much stronger impression on future visitors.

      Stunning, just stunning.

Everything about this cottage was just perfect. The attention to every detail was amazing. The loveliest thing that really touched me was the provision of a dog bed and bowl for the dog, just so thoughtful. The bed was so comfortable and the linen was crisp and cool. The sofa is comfortable and the living room is cool (we had a warm week) yet homely and cosy, it went a bit cooler on our last night so we had an excuse to light the fire, it was just wonderful watching the flames and chilling on the sofa. The showers (both of them) are amazing. The kitchen is lovely, airy and extremely well stocked for everything you need to cook. We had planned to eat out a few times and eat in the rest of the time, if you do the same I would advise you to bring food with you as the nearest shop of any size is a little way away. There was a really nice welcome pack waiting for us when we arrived. Now to the location. Wow, wow, wow. You can see the sea from the living room window. The garden is very natural and my dog loved it and claimed it as her own. There’ are rabbits on what will be the lawn when it is grown which is lovely to see. It is very quiet here and you can’t see let alone hear anything from the neighbouring caravan site. The walk to the lovely little beach takes a couple of minutes and there is a cafe down there. The sunsets are spectacular from the sofa in the living room. The lanes getting down here are very narrow but you soon get used to them. Lots of little beaches, villages and towns nearby. If you decide to come here then I promise you that you will not be disappointed. We definitely plan to return.

      This is an amazing cottage!

A perfect location for walking the coastal path and relaxing far away from the crowds. It’s located approximately 5 minutes from the small bay, There’s lots of lovely responsibly sourced branded personal and cleaning products. So often there’s insufficient of these in rental accommodation that I’ve learned to take a pack with me. There’s a lovely welcome pack with a small carton of milk, bread and Welsh cakes, as well as a few basics for cooking eg cooking oil, pasta and seasonings. The welcome file is very detailed and informative. There’s A small washing machine which is very useful. The kitchen has been very well thought through, spacious, both bathrooms are lovely. The bed is very comfortable. Again, so many places don’t get the beds right. The garden outside is a work in progress, as it would be for any brand new property, however the wildlife is amazing. Lots of rabbits and wonderful birds to listen to. There is a mobile caravan park/mobile home just below, but you’d never know it, it’s been so quiet even during the end of May 1/2 term/platinum Jubilee celebrations. My personal recommendation is to bring with you a few days meals and food basics, as there’s no where immediately available to purchase these items. There’s a lovely ice-cream parlour about 10 minutes walk down the hill, near to the beach. It’s been so good, I’ve booked to come back in October 2022!

A lovely property of a very high standard.

It was well-equipped, spacious yet cosy. Its location was perfect. So near to the coastal path, we enjoyed many stunning walks from the door. The sunsets over the sea were gorgeous and you could see these from the garden or the rear windows. It is in a very peaceful setting but right next to another property and a small mobile home park (a small field away). You could not see or hear the mobile home park once you are at the property but you notice it on the track approaching the property. This was a bit of a surprise for us on arrival, but did not affect our enjoyment of the property at all. We did struggle with the underfloor heating, but that’s probably because we are not used to it. We would highly recommend this property if you enjoy coastal walks and peace and quiet.

      Fabulous barn renovation,no expense spared.

Loved it. Shares space with the cottage next door,so perfect for a family and or friends to share the two properties. A beautiful location, quite a way from any shops,so go with plenty of supplies.Bakery at the Crossroads to New Quay, amazing cakes, pasties, etc, all fresh baked, delicious. Cwmtdyu a charming cove,we saw seals, and walking the Coast Path dolphins. It was fabulous. If you love to walk, then the area is walkers paradise, our dog Wilf had a wonderful time,as we did.A local bus operates so you can walk one way then get the bus back, which is much appreciated after a long walk.We are in our 70’s,the coast path is challenging in places, but the views and scenery are well worth the challenge. Thank you Dolwylan for a holiday to remember.
