What our customers say about their holidays

    • Graeme - Verified booking

We have had a wonderful 2 week stay at The Barn with our inlaws staying in adjoining Coach House.

The House is great, beautifully decorated with everything you need and some lovely little extras like nice soaps etc. Debbie and Nigel are so lovely, showed us round and explained how everything worked, they have been on hand for anything we might need. The paddock at the back is great for the dog, she loved chasing her ball (and rabbits & pheasants!) the view from the top is really lovely. The hot tub is great for relaxing after a long day exploring the area. We enjoyed a few long dog walks along part of the Weardale Way which can access from the village. Enjoyed a drink and pizza in the local pub. Chip shop in Frosterly and Stanhope are good and the Indian in Stanhope is great too. Woolsingham just a few mins drive has a lovely Italian that we went to one evening, also has a local park with ice cream van which kids enjoyed. There are two lovely bakerys one in Stanhope and one in Woolsingham for some nice lunch treats and also lovely fruit/veg/florist in Stanhope. We went swimming at Woolsingham pool and also larger pool with flume and waves in Spennymoor. Enjoyed a day out to Hall Hill Farm Park and Homeside Park. The in laws enjoyed Bowes museum and Barnard Castle. We have had a great 2 weeks here and would highly recommend to anyone.

From initially booking through Skykes until the day of our departure, the hosts Debbie & Nigel were fantastic with their communication.

I messaged Debbie the day before our 4 night arrival over the new year break and was given clear directions and instructions. Upon arrival there was ample parking. The property was well described and as lovely as expected. There was complimentary tea/coffee/milk, along with some rather tasty mince pies and mulled wine. The heating was on for our arrival which was a nice touch when it’s freezing outside. The place was spotless and very well presented. It didn’t take us long to get the log burner roaring and we felt right at home. Hot tub was an added bonus. We even caught Nigel carrying out his top up duties early one morning and ensuring the hot tub was lovely and clean throughout our stay. The weather wasn’t too kind to us for the whole stay but when we got chance to go out and about we had a lovely walk along the river with the dogs. We visited the local shop which had absolutely everything anyone could need without having to venture further afield. We also visited the Frosterley pub several times which was such a welcoming local. Everyone was so friendly. Kids and dogs were welcomed too. We all (4 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs) had an amazing time at The Barn. Highly recommended if you are planning a trip to Weardale.

Pros and Cons A lovely place in a beautiful setting and many good features inside the cottage such as comfortable beds, a nice kitchen and lovely shower.

However, the hot tub was very small and we didn't use it in the end. We were only left three very small towels- I think most people expect proper bath towels or bath sheets. The fridge was small- there were only two of us and it was a struggle- not sure what families or parties of six would do. There was stinginess with some items - a tiny amount of washing up liquid and only two dishwasher tablets - we are then told to make sure all the dishes are clean when we leave. There was only enough wood shavings to light the log burner three times. I would rather have these items stocked up on rather than a 'welcome basket' which we didn't want and left. The owner also made an appointment with a worker to come and look at the boiler while we were staying, which was very inconvenient as well as sending me a text on our home asking if we had taken one of their blankets - The blanket was found in another room.

We were disappointed with our stay here.

The cottage is very tiny. There is a folding dining table & chairs provided but really no space to put it. The double bedroom has limited space to walk by the window side & at the bed & at the bottom of the bed. The kitchen window overlooks a well planned seated garden which you discover is next doors. When you open the kitchen door the small sloping garden that greets you is overlooked by the other neighbours kitchen window, there wasn't any where to sit out at the rear. To the front is a small patio area with seating & a table but no lawn as that is next doors! However, the cottage is extremely well thought out & been designed to very high standards. Using every possible bit of space to its advantage. You have to appreciate the quirky character of it & it is in the most wonderful area with the sounds skylarks, curlews & the local peacocks.

We recently stayed at this Cottage and were extremely disappointed with our experience.

From the start, we encountered numerous issues that were never resolved, despite contacting the host. There was no WiFi, the hot tub displayed an error message and had a broken lid, and the TV didn’t work. The cleanliness was very subpar—from a filthy shower curtain, too cleaning items like a rusty dirty mop and bucket left to great you on arrival. Additional inconveniences included a washing machine that moved around the kitchen when in use and a clothesline that had to be retrieved from a bush. After three days, none of these problems were addressed, and our stay was significantly affected. We expected a comfortable, clean, and well-maintained space, but unfortunately, this was far from what we experienced and due to the nature of the issues we decided to end our stay 4 days early. I cannot recommend this property based on our stay.
