What our customers say about their holidays

    • Stuart - Verified booking

A tastefully renovated property in a quiet village located in the North Western fells of the Lake District.

Equally convenient for the City of Carlisle, the Solway Coast and the Northern Lake District, there are plenty of places to visit. Tastefully modernised, this stone cottage is comfortable and clean with ample provision of appliances and extras. We were surprised at the volume of cleaning products left for our use. We brought our own alcohol-based cleaners but these were only used initially since the obvious cleanliness gave us the confidence and comfort that we feared may not be evident. Whilst over and above our expectations in many aspects, there are some minor issues which are easily overcome...bring a torch for the dark nights as the steps up to the cottage are dark and would benefit from, say, solar lighting. If you struggle with steps, there are 17 to contend with to gain entry and the top 5 can be slippery when wet. The property Information Book is comprehensive and a ‘must read’ when you arrive (in the cabinet drawer in the lounge). Maybe the bedding duvets could be a higher tog rating or hadn’t been changed from Summer rating when we arrived in early October although we weren’t too cold and never felt the need to use the wood burner. Previous mentions re the sofas are correct...not that comfortable but, nevertheless, functional Overall, nothing would dissuade us from a return visit should the opportunity arise and we have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to others.

After reading a previous guests feedback from August, I was a little anxious in case the cottage wasn’t clean but it was generally in good order.

Just a little attention needed to cleaning the washing machine drawer and windowsills but there were plenty antibacterial sprays and cleaning materials around the cottage. The kitchen has every utensil you could possibly need but I would bin the rice and HP sauce left by previous visitors, as they look past their sell by date and not hygienic. Great views from the living room across the hills and the village is very peaceful. We didn’t use the log burner as the storage heaters were pre set to take the chill off the cottage. My only gripes were that the sofas are in desperate need of having new foam in the base cushions and are very uncomfortable to sit on. I had to get my pillows from the bedroom to use. Also the WIFI was an issue. It’s a restricted monthly supply of 60GB and renewed the week after our stay , so by Tuesday morning we were without Broadband! The pub next door is small and characterful and Mark and his assistant are superb hosts. But I would recommend reserving a table if you want to eat there , or you may not get a table. They take food orders until 7.30pm and the pub generally closes around 9.30pm depending on how full it is. All in all, an enjoyable break but a few adjustments to the facilities would make all the difference.

    • Jo - Verified booking

The accommodation was lovely, very well appointed with quality fixtures and fittings.

Beautiful location, very peaceful. Few minor maintenance niggles, potentially snagging as appeared new, but nothing that impacted the holiday. However, accessibility through the cottage was not ideal and this was not clear when booking. We were away with elderly parents and selected the cottage for the ground floor bedroom, however there were stairs to each lounge/kitchen area and to access the property, some without handrails and this did cause issues and concern. The WCs are low, again problematic for them and the bath, whilst lovely, was unmanageable for them to get in and out of. I think there was access into the cottage at grade, but parking was restricted close to this door, possibly due to ongoing building works. The first drive way gate requires someone to open and close it, within a field which is rural, uneven and at the time muddy terrain, again not ideal if you’re unsteady on your feet. Can I suggest it is worth noting more clearly that the property is not ideal if accessibility is a requirement on the description, but if not a requirement then I would highly recommend a stay here.

Beautiful cottage set in idyllic surroundings with a stream running through the garden.

Very quiet and peaceful with a magnificent view of Skiddaw from the upstairs window. There are lots of walks to be done from the cottage and Keswick is only 8 miles away. Our favorite pub is the Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite, which is a lovely unspoiled little village not far from the cottage - in fact you can walk there across the fields. The cottage was clean and well equipped. Bedding and towels are changed once a week. Just a couple of things though. There are lots of flies around, probably due to the fields of sheep nearby and also the towel rail fell off the wall in the bathroom, as it had not been fitted correctly. We saw from what had been written in the visitors book that it had been like that for about a year or more. We did mention this to Sykes, as we had nowhere to hang our towels. They removed the towel rail, but as of leaving, no replacement was provided. All in all we would love to return to this lovely part of the world and would definitely stay at Low Melbecks Cottage again.

    • June - Verified booking

Booking via telephone was great, very helpful young man.

Cottage was lovely and very well equipped. Great kitchen. The beds were fine, if a little hard and uncomfortable. Receiving an email the week before to say wifi had just become unavailable, seems a bit cynical as pretty much every guest book entry listed wifi as not working. An entry in November 2020 said the bathroom towel rail was on the floor in the hall. It was still there, not repaired, at the end of May 2021. The shower leaked and we found it dripped down into the lounge at the bottom of the stairs. Didn't see this until the Thursday before we left. Given all that, we would still return to the cottage as we loved it, the situation and the pool / games room. Oh and we also found some water on the floor in the pool room after it had been raining, maybe roof leaking? Smells a bit damp. All in all a great stay, just a few maintenance issues.
