    Askrigg Holiday Cottages

The village of Askrigg with its old market cross and impressive Church of St Oswald is in the Wensleydale area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The main street into Askrigg is lined with beautiful 18th and 19th-century homes, many featuring original clocks made by the area’s clockmakers. You’ll see examples in the nearby Dales Countryside Museum. You might recognise a house in the village as home to the fictional vet James Herriot. The King’s Arms pub was featured in All Creatures Great and Small as The Drover’s Inn.

This is a fantastic cottage! We were three adults and a dog and we had plenty of space. The garden is huge, with lots of seating and there is a barbecue. Views from every window. Location is stunning. We stayed in April and there were curlews, lapwings and oystercatchers everywhere! Lots of options for walking (with or without getting in the car), whether you want a gentle potter or a full day fell walking. The kitchen is the most well-equipped I have ever seen. There is no conventional cooker - instead there is an aga, two air fryers and a portable hob. Cooking on the aga was a lot of fun, but it does lose it's heat in the evening so forward planning is required! The parking instructions mentioned a garage - don't be fooled by the outbuilding to the left of the property - the real garage has been demolished but there is a parking bay on the right hand side of the front door.

We spent a wonderful few days at Thornsgill Cottage last week. It was such a cosy, relaxing ‘home from home’, with all that we needed for a great stay. We were also impressed by how clean and tidy it was on arrival. The cottage was very dog-friendly, with great walks literally just on the doorstep. There was also a lockable garage for bikes and a utility room for drying clothes after a walk. The cottage was very well located in the beautiful village of Askrigg. We were within easy walking distance (only a few minutes) of a well-stocked village shop, the BakeWell cafe (which sold delicious cakes, pies and also easy suppers to cook at home too) and three great pubs. Dinner at the King’s Arms was a particular highlight, with roast lamb from a farm just down the road and a host of other locally sourced ingredients. All in all, a fabulous stay. We’ll be back!

We had a lovely time at the West End Cottage in Askrigg. The cottage is very well equipped. It has everything you may need on your holiday. The bedrooms are very comfortable. The bathroom is modern with underfloor heating. There's also wood-burner which was handy when we visited at the beginning of March. The logs and everything you will need for it was already there too. Tea, coffee and biscuits were a nice touch and made us feel welcome. The location is amazing with great walks on your doorstep. There are three pubs within walking distance serving delicious food and drinks. I truly recommend this cottage to anyone. My friends and I are already thinking of returning soon to this beautiful cottage.

The web site and description fine but the reality of coping in a cold unwelcoming cottage .Kitchen small ,prep areas too small to be useful no dishes or plates or saucepans or even mugs in the kitchen was not conducive to a stress free holiday . we struggled to open the front door ,but fortunately the next door neighbour was around to help open the door . It would have been very thoughtful if the heating had been switched on on the day of our arrival as when we arrived the house was freezing cold ( the visitors book suggested the cottage had been empty since November ).A draft excluder for the porch door as the front letterbox is always open ..

I have been a repeat visitor to the gorgeous Thornsgill Cottage. The log burner makes it cosy in winter, just perfect for retreating to a comfy sofa with a large glass of wine after a long walk in the hills. It has everything you need if you want to cook but frankly it would be a shame to miss out on the wonderful local pubs which are only a hop, skip and a jump away. It’s also been brilliant to be able to bring my dog to the cottage - the only downside to this is you then have absolutely no excuse not get get up and get out onto the hills - a hard prospect to contemplate when tucked up all snug in one of the extremely comfortable beds.
