What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr Gary Moye - Verified booking

Overall we were happy with everything Cornish Horizons (aka Original Cottages) did to describe the property and provide support. We were happy with the property too apart from one issue. The very low score on the cleanliness is only because the mattress on the bed had an unpleasant smell (a bit like sweaty feet), which meant we were uncomfortable the first night, until we stripped the bed, stopped using the duvet, and eventually worked out that it was the mattress that smelled, not just the duvet or mattress cover (we thought it was at first it was the duvet, then the mattress cover, but we think they smelled because they had been in contact with mattress). Apart from that, the rest of the property was clean and well presented. I can appreciate that spotting that the mattress smelled bad is probably not something the owner or cleaner would have easily noticed (unless they had tried to sleep in the bed). Hopefully, the owner has done something about the mattress after the comments I called and left with Paige on 0333 0151348 and the note I left on the stripped mattress for the cleaner/property owner.

This is a lovely property in the most fabulous location.

It's really well stocked - the kitchen had all the equipment I needed to cook meals. The sitting room had a lovely selection of books and games, although frankly we spent a lot of time just staring out of the window at the astonishing view. There's plenty to keep a family busy nearby - kayaking, the Hall walk, Fowey aquarium, crabbing and of course jumping into the harbour at high tide. The local shop is open every day and well stocked, although I was caught out by face masks still being required - bring one with you! I've knocked one point off comfort as it's clear that the rooms at the back of the property are quite damp. It didn't bother us in the slightest, but people who feel strongly about that sort of thing may want to bear this in mind. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We never go back to the same place twice, but I could see us going back to Polruan and The Watch Below - it is a very special place.

We did wonder if the proximity to the ferry and car park might be a problem but it was not. In fact it was quite interesting and amusing to see people accessing car park/ferry and watching the ferry go back and forth from our balcony. The only slightly negative thing from our view was the number of steps into the property but the details did mention these. We did not realise these would be split into three 'batches'. Made accepting our Tesco order a bit difficult but we survived! The beds were mega comfortable and the cleanliness of the property impressive. We also liked the open plan living. It was just such a shame that some businesses and restaurants were not fully open but that was because of Covid. We would recommend Fowey Hall Hotel for a special meal. We will certainly return to The Old Masters Yard property again in the future.

Originally booked 3 years ago but delayed and finally cancelled during the two years of Covid restrictions, but worth the wait. Solidly built apartment, tastefully decorated and furnished, with great views over the ferry crossing and estuary towards Bodinnick. In spite of the rooks and crows in the trees behind the Station Master's House, the clanking of the ferries and the ferry traffic, it was surprisingly quiet. Once again great support and advice from Tom in the Cornish Horizons office barely 100 metres away. We have now stayed in 5 different CH properties in Fowey and this is definitely one of the best.

Beautiful location with superb views of the harbour both day and night with the lights of Fowey ac ross the river.

Very well furnished plus the little touches of cornish biscuits etc on the table. Cannot drive to the front door due to very narrow walk only street so drop off the luggage at either street end then drive back up to the carpark above the village. This could be clearer on the Sykes website but is not a problem for the able bodied. Polruan is a delightful village full of character and much quieter than Fowey which can be reached by pedestrian ferry every ten minutes or so at a cost one way of £2.40; apricey extra for those crossing for meals so use the two excellent Polruan pubs whose food is just as good.
