What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mr Currie - Verified booking

As you should know, our appreciation of the property and enjoyment of our holiday was badly affected by complete lack of water supply to the property from 10am on Monday 21 Aug, when we notified you, until 4pm on Wed 23 Aug. At 11am on Mon, your text indicated that you were sorry this issue was affecting our holiday, which you repeated in an email at 7pm. My email at 8am on Tues indicated that we expect to be reimbursed for disruption and time wasted. Plumbers first attended late on Monday afternoon, and told us that they had not been contacted until 4pm. At 2.22pm on Tuesday, you told me that plumbers had reattended and hadn't managed to locate the issue, and that the homeowner had contacted United Utilities. They worked (noisily) from 1am until 3am on Wednesday morning, so we looked forward to having water in the morning. We had none, to our surprise and the surprise of Paul, maintenance man for United Cottages. Paul told me in a later phonecall (2.20pm) that UU had solved the problem but neglected to turn the water supply back on. Paul was very helpful and supportive throughout, in person and by phone, although he was unable to solve the problem. Finally, I should mention that we were offered alternative properties on Monday (very inconvenient in Penrith and Carlisle!) and Wednesday (after the problem had been solved, although we had not been informed). I look forward to hearing from you re proposed reimbursement for the affect on our enjoyment of our holiday.

Drystones was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for selfcatering.

The description was 100% correct. A couple of minor problems for me were; 1. No warning given of steps down into kitchen. We arrived quite late (after 8 pm) and my partner entered first, otherwise I think I would have fallen. 2. The bannister up to the double bedroom in the attic could not be gripped at the top. I feel that andother bannister on the oppisite side of the wall would be beneficial. The steps were wide but a little steep and I am not getting any younger (70 +) 3. The window in the attic room was difficult to close (? hinges had dropped) and window needed lifting to close. Blind was a bit of a problem as the anchor point was not very accessible, and the blind iself was heavy. Perhaps a roller blind would be better? 4. My partner is quite tall and therefore managed to reach the skylight windows to open them and also reach up to shut the blind in the skylight. A short pole to facilitate this would be more than helpful if the holiday maker was on the short side. Overall we had a lovely holiday and the accommodation was a delight and very central for exploring the lakes.

Drystones provides an excellent base for a walking holiday in the Lake District.

It is in a good location within the beautiful village of Grasmere, with a great view over the river below. It is comfortable, cosy and well-equipped with a good TV, Internet, cooker, microwave fridge, dish washer and washing machine. There are plenty of helpful gadgets like an iron and hairdryer, plenty of cupboards and drawers, a great many walking books (that we made good use of) and reading books and a good number of enjoyable games. The down sides were steep stone steps leading up to the property, and a low ceiling in the main bedroom. We love Grasmere and are often there at the beginning of January to celebrate my birthday - but this year the village this week was empty and closed!! - most of the hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs were closed for refurbishment or lack of staff - but it didn't spoil our stay - and thankfully The Good Sport next door to Drystones was open (except on Monday). We would recommend the property for a couple or 2 couples. Thank you.

The house was lovely and clean and exactly what it said on the website.

We appreciated the Christmas decorations and that we found the house warm. There were few things that could be improved, first we were only given two toilet rolls for a family of four for almost a week stay. An extra roll would have been good rather than us having to buy more. Especially since this wasn’t mentioned in the list of things to bring. Or maybe you could add it to the list of things to bring! The kettle had green mould inside so we were not able to use it, sachets for regular cleaning of kettles are not expensive and extremely quick and easy to use.. just a suggestion. The frying pan has well passed its use by date, it’s all scratched and blackened by use. If you search it up you’ll see that this is actually considered a health hazard. Once again, you can get a decent pan for £20-£25, well worth the expense and I’m sure well covered by the fee charged. Apart from this the house was great, comfortable beds too.

A nice apartment which would benefit greatly from central heating. I appreciate we made a late booking but there was a distinct lack of heat when we arrived. So much so we ate out the first night, not our plan after a long drive. We used 4 blanket throws on the bed, and I am an outdoor person! We adjusted the controls on the storage heaters which improved things slightly. It is the only property we have been to where there has not been a welcome pack. Thank goodness I remembered tea bags as the only thing in the kitchen cupboards was Salt and Pepper. Very well equipped plenty of plates, cutlery and glasses etc. Very conveniently position with the bonus of off road parking. Beneath the apartment is Goody Blakes Restaurant with an excellent menu, superb chef and lovely ambience. Would I recommend, yes, but possibly not in cold weather.
