Holiday Cottages in the UK

The UK is a land of contrasts; head away from major cities like London, Birmingham, Liverpool and you’ll quickly reach the stunning natural landscapes that characterise places like Cornwall, the Lake District, and Dartmoor. From amazing historic landmarks to exquisite restaurants, there’s so much to experience in the UK, and holiday cottages are a great choice if you want accommodation that offers quality and comfort while giving you the freedom to holiday on your own terms.

Picture a cottage and you’re perhaps thinking of a cosy little idyll, maybe a traditional terrace or former miner’s dwelling. These holiday cottages are great for year-round breaks, and are uniquely British. There are many kinds of UK holiday cottages available, including spacious modern lodges, pet-friendly barn conversions and even holiday cottages boasting their own hot tub or swimming pool – and yes they are normally heated!

What to do on your UK holiday cottage holiday

No matter where you travel to across the length and breadth of Britain, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable getaway. Head to the southern tip of the country and you’ll find some world-class beaches and a temperate climate. Cornwall boasts some exquisite strips of sand and surfing spots such as at Fistral Beach, or you head a little upwards to North Devon and discover one of the best sandy beaches in Europe, the stunning Woolacombe Beach.

Great beaches aren’t unique to Britain, but what marks this island out as special is its long history and the sheer number of fascinating historic landmarks scattered throughout the land. There are great castles all over the place, well over two thousand in Scotland alone! Prime examples include Conwy Castle in Wales, Stirling Castle in Scotland and Bamburgh Castle, located on the coast of Northumberland.

Beyond beaches and castles there’s so much more going on, from world-class arts festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe to miles upon miles of hiking trails, cycle paths, and mountains to climb. And what better way to enjoy the country than with a stay in your very own little castle? Check out the selection of great UK holiday cottages, available for all tastes and budgets.

"The family who own the farm are absolutely lovely, friendly and helpful and made our stay lovely. The farm is very peaceful set away from the village. There is a grassy area across the yard. It is shared use with an old seesaw swings which my grandchildren loved, they had the benefit of playing with the owners granddaughter and use of her trampoline..The cottage is just starting up there was no wifi as advertised but this was put in Wednesday. Had code on Thursday and worked fine. kitchen small but functional, watched the cats playing in the old barn from the kitchen window.. We had the benefit of lovely weather and could dry our grandchildrens clothes on the washing line. A tumble drier and small vacuum cleaner would have been nice. Never used the gas fire had radiators in all rooms so warm. Water always hot. Big bath fits 3 kids. Beds, two double beds and a large bedroom with two singles. Having non sleeping grandchildren I've slept in every bed. Have to say single beds comfiest. Aberaeron good for taking children crabbing does get busy. The village is very pretty with its painted houses. Beach shingle stones. Went to NewQuay lovely beaches, bustling but busy on a bank holiday, the parking used car park just back from main town 2.50 all day. Penbryn national trust beach, good tip from the homeowner, drive down and drop stuff off then park back up the hill. Takes 5 mins but easier. Llangranog beach lovely little village shop pub at the beach. NB get there early to park. Aberystwyth steam railway lovely takes an hour to get to top, so go early and allow yourself time to walk to the waterfalls and get a later train back. Ice cream from the chocolate shop at Devils mount delicious. The scenery driving through Wales is breathtaking, driving around seems to take a while as the roads are winding but after a few trips out you realise things aren't that far away and use the little shops. We drove back into England and queues. I missed winding roads and Welsh hill peace and quiet at the farm. The review is not just about accommodation or amenities it's about people. If you want to meet the nicest hardworking people and sample the best Victoria Sponge cake you've ever eaten then go visit S59812. We sampled a little haven of peace in a busy life.Yes I would go back"

"A lovely place to stay if you want total peace and quiet! It's a lovely cottage, very well equipped - the kitchen is large and has everything you could want. The woodburner is effective - the central heating is run from it, so you do need to keep it going if it's chilly. The bed is very comfortable and sleeping in total silence is a real treat. Web didn't use the sofa bed as a bed, but as a sofa it's perfect for curling up in front of the fire. We didn't use the games in the cupboard but there are loads of them! The lovely owners live next door and are very helpful, but will leave you to enjoy the peace without interruption. Dog owners - no dogs on the furniture (fair enough) and be aware that the garden is shared, so you're asked not to exercise dogs there. There are loads of nearby walks, beaches and quiet country lanes, so this really isn't a problem. You're asked to remove pet hair etc before you leave (again, that's fair enough) but with mostly hard flooring and a good Dyson, that was a ten-minute whip round. If muddy paws need a wash after a walk, there's a mop bucket and an outside tap - there are dog towels supplied too!Ruthwell Church with its stunning 8th Century Cross is an easy 10 minute walk along the lane."

"This is a great cottage, very clean with everything you would ever want in a holiday cottage. The garden if fantastic, well fenced and very dog friendly. You may be put of with cottage details as i think from memory it says something about the cottage being on a road? The front door does go on to the open frontage, but this has car parking space and the road is only a quiet lane to residential houses. Do not be put off by this as it is very safe for both dogs and young children. The owner (a lovely lady) lives next door so any problems or concerns she is near at hand. The log burner is very effective, as good weather during our stay we only used it once one evening, but in no time the radiators were hot and the cottage was very warm. We were supplied with plenty of coal and logs. Last minute my daughter (25 yrs) decided to join us and she had very comfortable nights sleeping on the sofa bed, (so often these can be so uncomfortable!) There is also plenty of bedding provided. The location we found to be ideal and having stayed in the area many times over many years we would not hesitate to come back to the locality and cottage again."

"S69558 offers a warm welcome and is equipped with all of the essentials for a good holiday. As with most accommodation, there is a bit of getting used too, when it comes to the operational functions of the installed equipment, but that avails itself in a short time.S69558's location allows access to several local beaches (2 to 4 miles away)The downside for us was the parking and anything other than a small car will not fit outside, so the next road has to be used as the better alternative. The stairs are steep, but that was advised in the brochure, also the room with single beds is difficult to move around in and would benefit from a repositioning of the first bed along the back wall. If I had to be really critical? the tap water was the worst we have ever tasted, [No fault of the owner] even the dog refused to drink it, so we had to buy bottled instead. An aqua filter would probably correct the problem, tapping into the main line under the sink.We have however enjoyed the overall stay and consider it value for money."

"Everything was well prepared and ready for our arrival. The owner was very helpful. Easy access to washing and drying on site. Recycling and waste disposal available on site. Many little extras were included—tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and 1 pint milk on arrival. The shower was excellent and spacious, kitchen equipment all provided. The cottage was warm, hot water readily available and controllable from within the cottage. The location was pleasant, easy access from the road and suitable parking space on site close to the cottage. The chickens, doves, moorhens, coots and other wildlife added to the attraction, but did not disturb at night. There is one general shop in the village (¼ mile away), but Pwllheli is reasonably close, with easy access and all necessary shops, banks etc.The cottage is eminently suitable for a couple, but with no "appendages"."
