"Very average. We were four adults in a two bedroom lake facing apartment. The apartment is spacious however it is only set up for very simple self catering. There is a cooker, dishwsasher (that cleaned dishes sporadically), microwave, cooker, toaster and plenty of hot water. Wifi was good. However there weren't simple things like a cheese grater, egg cups, cafetière/coffee maker or plentiful cutlery and crockery. There were four items of each crockery or cutlery. Just enough, but it would be more usual in a self catering apartment to have more than one fork, knife, spoon and mug each. We found that the sound proofing from other apartments was good, but there was heavy traffic noise in the distance and I would not find it peaceful relaxing on the balcony on a summer evening. The carpets and the very basic sofa/chairs were stained in several places, but otherwise the place was clean. Bedrooms have good storage and set up as hotel bedrooms, each with iron and board, hairdryer, kettle. We were paying high season rates but the swimming pool, sauna etc was closed on the Monday and the Boathouse pub was closed on the Sunday from 4pm onwards. Both these were advertised as normal opening at these times when booking. Whilst not a show stopper there were several things in the pool area out of order when it was open (drinking water, the ice thing and the experience shower was not fully operational). The bar/restaurant is really not much more than an open plan hotel reception. It was not a place we would visit for a relaxed meal, it was more akin to a place that was a thoroughfare between spa and hotel with families using the seating for coffees, drinks and playing board games. In summary, it was very average and not upto the standards of other self catering places for a similar price."

"The property was unbelievably small, this wouldn't have been too bad - if it hadn't been so dark. The main wall in the lounge/diner/kitchen was the darkest purple, the kitchen units were dark brown, the furniture was brown. The lighting was so dim, the central light for the lounge area was 3 bulbs, they must have been only 15 watts each, we needed the standard lamp on as well and the kitchen light. One small window by the front door, the window in the kitchen did not get any sun.The bathroom was fine, water pressure was low, but manageable. The bathroom window was large, with the window going down to the sink, there was no voile or blind, the glass was obscure, however often the male owner could be seen outside. Yes, I know the garage and the dogs kennel was there, but it did feel lacking in privacy. The bedroom was nice and light with good bedside lamps. There was no information in the accommodation, no doctors number (which would have been useful) hospital details, nearest pub, takeaway etc. No places to visit info.We felt that even when it was pouring with rain we had to get out, by the Wednesday we felt we couldn't cope any longer (we were getting more an more depressed), so we went back, packed and left early Thursday morning. Some people may like dainty china tea cups and tiny tea spoons, personally I like one large coffee in the morning and then drink water. With the lack of glasses, I don't think they approve of wine either. For the amount of money we paid, we felt it was very expensive."

"Too far away from everything, horrible long pitted track road to manoeuvre to get to the place. With absolutely no amenities within walking distance. If you did want to walk, its 3 miles to the nearest pub (which i highly recommend, the pub that is), along a main road with no pavment, just gras verges. A lot of rules about what to do and not to do. You have to take your rubbish to the bottom of the road yourself. Says dog friendly, should read dogs tollerated in the living room, but please hoover the dog hairs from the carpet before you leave. Not allowed in till 4 o'clock have to be out by 10 o'clock because apparently it takes 6 hours to clean the place? Now i always leave wherever i stay just the way i found it, as i did this time, so I don't need to see notices all over the place to remind me. All this did was make my stay very uncomfortable, i was afraid to move in case i did something wrong and the book to list breakages was just the last straw. I have been renting places all over the highlands for years and without a doubt this has been my worst experience. The lodge is very very nice, beautifully decorated but you just don't feel at ease. My husband was afraid to use the oven in case he made a mark in it. It looked like new, it was pristine. So no, i would never stay there again. I loved the surroundin area and will go there again but this lodge spoilt it a bit with the unease i felt incase i or the dogs made a mess. I have 2 chihuahuas? Glad it wasn't labradors."

"Allonby is a lovely old seaside town that offers nice clean beaches, the food at the Baywatch is great value, the Codfather offers excellent fish n chips and breakfast food too.The cottage is in an excellent position very near to a spacious beach (when the tide is out there's acres of sandy beach), it is immaculately presented from the outside but we found the cottage to be cold and dark, it would benefit from a refresh, my wife had to clean the cooker before she could use it, there were a lot of cobwebs in the lounge, we found the bed to be too firm (this is subjective of course) the cottage would have to receive a make over for us to stay here again, the one wall in the lounge is a vivid aubergene colour with a very old and tatty picture on it, throw it away and get some nice local photo's up, this cottage could be easily transformed into an excellent holiday base."

"Woodland Cottage, Romansleigh, North Devon20-27th MayA very beautifully furnished, comfortable and very peaceful delightful cottage, where you just want to linger and stay forever. It is very peaceful and the owners Elaine and Steve are delightful and very generous people who made us very welcome and were very helpful. The lake where we could sit and relax was a delight with fish and wildlife and lovely country views.Exmoor with its many delights of river walks, moor views and walks, coastal scenery and lovely villages with little restaurants and tearooms is just a drive away. We had a delightful week and would love to recommend this cottage and certainly look forward to returning again. T. and J. Hardy"
