"We are a party of six walkers who stayed in the cottage between 11 and 18 March, 2016, at which time a new contractor-caretaker had taken over responsibility for the property. Consequently many of the criticisms made in previous reviews concerning cleanliness had been resolved. The property itself is charming, well furnished and ideally located for accessing Exmoor and the surrounding coastline. However, we did encounter a variety of problems, some of which were easily resolved but others not.Matters such as the absence of spare refuse bags, no waste bins in rooms, a lack of bathmats, and a bare minimum supply of towels and tea towels were irritants. More seriously, there was a mouse infestation throughout the house – clearly a recurrent problem which requires a permanent solution provided by a reputable pest control company.Regarding domestic appliances, the washing machine would not spin or drain, the dishwasher tilted when fully stacked and the electric oven was slow and inefficient. Considering the potential number of occupants, the kitchen inventory is also inadequate, and the following items need to be provided: more mugs, weighing scales, a measuring jug, serving dishes, mixing bowls and eggcups. Furthermore, although the property description mentions that the water supply is fed from a spring, it does not refer to the resulting poor pressure in some of the bathrooms, nor the fact that this affects the hot water supply, some of which is heated by an oil-fired Aga and some from the heating system boiler. One bathroom in particular – in an endeavour to retain an antique sink fitment – delivers little more than a trickle from the tap. We found that six of us could cope by working around which bathroom delivered the best option at a given time but larger parties would struggle to do so. A serious upgrade of the water supply and plumbing is therefore required. At the very least, a backup electric shower should be installed.Overall, though, the general ambience and comfort level of the cottage is commendable and most of the issues referred to above could be resolved by a small investment from the proprietors."

"We had a lovely holiday at S20229 and will definitely return. The house is a brilliant size for our families, and we love the variety of different living areas. The views from the windows and gardens are fabulous. The Aga takes some getting used to but made the kitchen an wonderfully warm and happy place to be in. Beautiful location, lovely house, a pleasure to be in. We hope to make our visits an annual event! On the negative side - the hot water supply for the showers is not good - we kept ending up with cold or lukewarm showers. Can this be fixed? It was very annoying. The dishwasher basket doesn't fit the dishwasher and so you can't fit in a full load of crockery, which is frustrating. Also, there's something wrong with the bottom tray, so it tips over and falls onto the floor, which is worrying for the crockery! We found mouse droppings in various places, which was disappointing. It would help to have an instruction manual for the electric cooker; and some attempt at marking the temperatures on the oven dial that have rubbed off. The back of a chair in the middle bedroom fell off, and one of the bannisters seems wonky. The key safe is almost impossible to shut. Also - instead of an instruction to ring the caretakers to arrange pick up a few days before the visit (which is very unusual!), can we just be contacted with the key safe number, as this is all that's needed? If these details can be fixed, it will be be perfect."

"We LOVED the house and fabulous garden and would definitely come back. Wonderful amount of rooms and there's something for everyone - not easy, in a party of 11 people ranging in age from 5 to 80! It is a stunning location and a gorgeous house. We look forward to many more visits! The only points we would make are basic housekeeping issues - a few things which, if addressed, would make our stay perfect and which in our experience should be standard in holiday houses. The porch is overflowing with recycling - bottles, plastic, cardboard etc - which is beginning to smell as the weather improves. This needs to be removed, and the recycling possibilities made more clear for future people staying. We took our recycling to the recycling bank at Minehead Tescos. The dishwasher is out of salt; the tumble dryer tank is full and needs emptying; we could find no pegs to hang washing out. There are cobwebs everywhere; much of the crockery, in and out of cupboards, is dusty and we found mouse droppings in a bowl. There was a big splodge of bacon fat on the draining board when we arrived. We were looking forward to using the table tennis table in the garden but this has been left out in the rain (if it had been folded up it would probably have survived!) and is now warped and un-usable.We really did enjoy our stay - we LOVED the house! - despite these issues, and look forward to visiting again!"

"We stayed for 1 week in August 20156 Adults - 5 kids ( ages 6,4,3,2,10months)Pros-Very old lovely looking detached house with working Aga.RoomyEnough room for allEnough bathrooms for allLarge spacious garden behind walls, great for kids. The house is a bit out of the way!. Tucked down a little winding lane, my Father likes to walk to the pub for " the last one" but this couldn't happen as the nearest pub was in Porlock, which isn't far away but you can't get a taxi, it took 1.5 hours, 4 firms booked but no one would take us to Allerford? Night time is very dark with no street lamps so walking back was not an option. The house needed cleaning, cobwebs everywhere, including very large spiders too and mice in the living rooms.!Previous occupants recycling was in the porch awaiting the bin crew. This was an obstacle course getting in and out.The dark wooden old bedroom - the bed looks like it's being chewed by something, it's not very steady, looks like it's about to collapse!.The windows are dangerous for kids, no locks on and as they are very low you need to keep an eye out!The shower door kept coming off its rollers, annoying!.I will not be returning, the house isn't loved, it's just left there to decay, it's a real shame that it was once someone's home. It needs to be shut down and all jobs taken care of, they have a very serious mouse infestation! Don't leave food out."

"Great location, great size house. The beds were very comfortable. However the ‘annex’ was freezing cold with no proper heating, only plug in electric heaters which we were not prepared to leave on through the night, meaning the annex was not suitable for anyone to sleep in. So many light bulbs didn’t work when we arrived, including lamps, the hallway and the annex ‘bathroom’. The front garden was advertised as allowing ‘parking for 4 cars’, however we struggled to get 3 cars in. The gate was extremely old, rickety & rotten and far too narrow for cars to get through with ease. The area was also incredibly muddy and most definitely unsuitable for parking and walking on! The biggest problem we encountered was the terrible lack of hot water. The house is big enough for, and advertised as being able to accommodate, 12 people. But when one person had a bath or shower, the hot water was GONE!! Ridiculous & incredibly frustrating when we had children & babies to bath. The house is in desperate need of some updating to make it more pleasing to the eye.In fortunately for these reasons, we would not return."
