About this property

Montague House, a four-bedroom mid-terrace, three-storey rustic cottage in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd is the perfect place for families and friends to spend some quality time together. Very much suited to walkers and hikers who want to use the property as a base for exploring all that the Snowdonia National Park has to offer - with great mountain views and proximity to all the amenities you'll never be short of things to do when you visit. The open-plan living space is a great space for socialising and cooking, with a kitchen furnished with an electric cooker and a dishwasher to help clean up after your home-cooked meals, along with a breakfast bar for your morning coffee, and Chesterfield sofas to relax on while the chef of the group takes care of dinner. From here, the living/dining room is a great spot to unwind, with a woodburning stove and a Smart TV, a lovely space for snuggling up after a day of walking. The bathroom has a walk-in shower for a quick freshen up and a roll-top clawfoot bath, which is perfect for soaking away your stresses. When sleep calls, the first bedroom is a pleasant space decorated in deep blues with a double bed, the second bedroom likewise has a double bed, but is more suited to a solo adult, both located on the first floor. Climb upstairs and find the third bedroom, another double with Velux windows that allow sunlight to pour in, and the fourth and final bedroom is a cute bunk room to give the children their own space. Outside, the property features a quaint garden with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys; take in the scenery and enjoy outdoor dining and lounging on the picnic benches. An action-packed day out awaits at Blaenau Ffestiniog; your little ones will love Zip World Llechwedd, an indoor adventure park complete with ziplines, ball pits and more, and for the railway enthusiasts in the family, hop aboard the Ffestiniog Railway for a journey back in time and don't forget to explore the stunning natural beauty of Cwmorthin Waterfall. There’s also an abundance of outdoor activities to try such as hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing, as well as walks around the town and nearby quarries. Head out of the town for and visit Portmeirion, a unique and beautiful Italianate village that is home to a variety of attractions, including the Gwaith Powdwr North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve and Morfa Bychan. The village is known for its eclectic architecture, which features a mix of styles from around the world, with a focus on Italy, and visitors can also enjoy a variety of shops, restaurants, and pubs in the village. For a day at the seaside, Porthmadog is an area full of natural beauty and historical attractions, as well as Black Rock Sands caves are a must-see for nature lovers; visit Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and enjoy a scenic journey through the stunning Snowdonia National Park or the Ynysypandy Slate Mill, the only working slate mill in Wales. Whatever your style of adventure, Montague House is the choice for you and your loved ones.

Blaenau Ffestiniog is ideally located for visiting Snowdonia National Park. Shops, taverns, and restaurants abound. Zip Globe Slate caves is the longest and fastest zip line in Europe and the world. The slate mines are a unesco world heritage site, and tourists may take underground expeditions to experience old-fashioned mining. The Ffestiniog mountain railway spans 13 kilometres across Snowdonia to Porthmadog. Portmeirion, famed for its architecture and the film site of The Prisoner, is nearby, as are child-friendly beaches.

The kitchen suited our needs and had adequate equipment and utensils. The location is excellent and the main selling point. However, we did find the property quite untidy: stacks of paving slabs, half used bag of compost and a parasol in a heap at the front of the house is the first thing we saw and was a disappointing first impression. Random items just left up corners, like the spare laminate flooring in the top double bedroom. The quality of the decorating is really poor - I had read other people say this in other reviews, and is was not the most important factor in our choice of somewhere to stay, however when we were there it just made the house feel a bit like a student let rather than a holiday home. The place did feel a little uncared for. I am referring to things like really careless paintwork on the doors and trim, one light switch had the screws missing, bits of trim not matching up neatly, things like that. Nothing a huge problem, but the house didn't feel like the holiday treat we had hoped for.

The work surface in the kitchen was sticky and in places smeared with white decorators caulk. There were paint splashes on the floors. Some paintwork was peeling, some appeared to finished with thin undercoat. The bathroom door did not close and fan did not work. The finishing on a lot of the woodwork was extremely crude. House needs the attention of a professional decorator!
