About this property

An impressive luxury cottage and former Edwardian shooting lodge, situated on the stunning Egton Estate, approximately one hour north of York and six miles from the picturesque fishing town of Whitby. The Estate sits on the northeast fringe of the North York Moors National Park and offers 6,000 acres of magnificent woodland, pastures and moorland for you to explore.

Manor Cottage is a first class choice, whether for a short romantic stay, a week’s summer holiday for a family or an idyllic spot for a group of friends wanting to sample the superb fishing on the Esk river - which is a two minute walk away. Egton train Station is also a 2 minute walk away and it takes you straight into Whitby.

Here, elegance and comfort go hand in hand; original features and antique furniture are complemented a cosy woodburning stove, welcoming décor and quality soft furnishings – the perfect country retreat.

With central heating throughout, Manor Cottage has a flagged hallway leading to a good size sitting room with a magnificent stone fireplace and woodburning stove, offering supreme cosines in the cooler months. There are some lovely decorative touches, such as the original wood panelling, charming writing desk, rustic coffee table and Edwardian-style copper ware, which give the space a pleasing sense of homely informality.

From the kitchen window, admire the picturesque courtyard and beautiful grounds of the adjacent Manor House. Great care has gone into updating this period property and the kitchen retains some lovely original features, such as the deep Belfast sink and quirky ‘pulley maid’ a – useful for drying and airing clothes after a bracing moorland ramble. The dining area with farmhouse table seats five people, a lovely spot to enjoy a full English breakfast before heading into the great outdoors.

Moving upstairs, to the wide landing, you’ll find three delightful bedrooms. A tranquil master double with king-size bed, TV and a large wardrobe. There’s a charming twin with full size single beds overlooking the courtyard and a smart single bedroom with antique brass bed, original decorative fireplace and views of a lovely wooded area to the rear.

The spacious house bathroom has a bath with shower over, basin and WC.

Outside, the front courtyard area is a pleasant place to enjoy a BBQ in the warmer months. There’s a table and chairs to sit awhile and enjoy your morning coffee with nothing to disturb but the sound of birdsong.

The location is very special – the lovely village of Egton and neighbouring Egton Bridge are picturesque and boast three inns offering the choice of hearty pub meals or elegant fine dining; there is simply stunning woodland and fabulous walks nearby, with Whitby, and its beautiful beaches, only 10 minutes’ drive.

Come and escape to the country at Manor Cottage – you’re sure to have a memorable stay.

The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors. Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.

Our stay was excellent and the hosts Olly and Laura were lovely. It location is ideal for some charming Esk Valley walks, getting to Grosmont and access to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway along with short drives to Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes etc.. We wanted to use the scheduled train from Egton Bridge to go to Whitby and avoid using the car but the 3 hour frequency of the service was a limiting factor. As for the house itself we felt very comfortable there and it was lovely and cosy with its biomass central heating. Once we’d tweaked the radiator valves and thermostat to our liking (the upstairs when we arrived tended to get too hot for us) there was no need to light the log burning stove. One unexpected benefit of a well built period cottage was you could barely hear our very raucous children from one room to the next. So a lie in was still possible even when they were below making lots of noise! For us little to fault but if we return as we hope to with a dog in future there isn’t an enclosed space to let them out to. Worth considering for any dog owners for the early morning toilet trip outdoors for their dog. Though if your dog is well socialised it should get on great with Olly and Laura’s dogs! A great stay. Thanks Olly & Laura

Cosy and well equipped with the softest beds for a great nights sleep. Superb location for walking and no less than 4 pubs nearby at Egton Bridge and Egton. The Wheatsheaf at Egton is highly recommended with great new hosts that took over in late 2022. You wont be disappointed. God's country.
