What our customers say about their holidays

    • A - Verified booking

Wifi, although advertised as available, was non secured and would not connect anyway.

Not really a problem for us, but might be for others who may need it. There is a very noisy main road just below the property, the noise from which is quite invasive by day when outside or if windows are open. However it dissipates at night. Having said that, the woodland location and seclusion is perfect for those who enjoy walking and wildlife (we saw deer rutting, a fox, rabbits, birds of prey and squirrels from the house, and were serenaded by an owl (Little Owl?) most nights. There are numerous walks from the door, or further afield. The cottage itself is very warm and cosy, with plenty of wood for the fire/woodburer and piping hot water. We were only contacted twice by the caretaker, once to make sure we had arrived and were happy, and once just before we left to give us leaving details. Other than that we were left to our own devices. Just as we like. There were not reams of rules and regulations as is sometime the case at holiday cottages, so we instantly felt at home. Just one or two niggles : the upstairs loo takes an age to refill and the upstair shower head is "lazy" and wont stay upright. Perhaps a mirror over the basin would be better for those who wet shave. As a cottage in which to recharge the batteries it is perfect and had the desired effect.

There was a problem with the heating downstairs and the hot water supply on the last day or so.

My daughter-in-law left a message for the owner as it was quite difficult getting everyone up and ready on the last morning when there was no hot water. This did not happen the last time we came so it must have been a "one off". We hope so and that it can be fixed before the next people come. . As regards the heating, we found that it was not very efficient downstairs and had to put on the gas fires even though the weather was relatively mild. We did appreciate the Christmas decorations which were much more plentiful than last time and added to our enjoyment.. We all enjoyed the house itself and its facilities; it is a good place for a larger party and my grandson wants to come again in 2 years time when it's our turn to spend Christmas with the family. Thank you, too, for the welcome tray of goodies! Minehead is great for Christmas with its seafront and also the grounds at Dunster Castle to walk off Christmas food! One thing that would help us would be to have a wash basin in each bedroom; the upstairs bathroom is relatively small for 4 bedrooms and its occupants. Otherwise a lovely place to stay.

Where improvements could be made:- 1.

The instructions to find the house were not easy. We needed to turn RIGHT into King George Road and the house was on the RIGHT HAND corner as we turned in. (We saw the left hand part of King George Road and turned left which was wrong but as there were no instructions....!) 2.Although there were 3 Christmas trees only ONE was of a good size and apart from a lovely wreath on the front door there were no room decorations at all which was disappointing. We have often rented houses at Christmas which have been decorated but these decorations were a bit minimal. 3.As regards equipment, the kitchen knives were not at all sharp. Fortunately we brought some of our own otherwise there would have been a problem. Praise:- Generally we loved the house and there was so much room. The bedrooms were particularly well furnished and appointed. We also loved the spacious kitchen especially the coffee machine. Please will you give our thanks to the owners who left a very generous tray of gifts for us. We much appreciated this! As regards feedback, only publish the complimentary ones!

The house was immaculately clean when we arrived - thank you to Angie, the housekeeper.

The fresh flowers, port and chocolates were a lovely welcoming gift as well. This is more a cherished home than a holiday let. All of the furnishings and artwork have been lovingly chosen to enhance the historical features of the house and there is every modern comfort that you could wish for. The kitchen is very well equipped and the super king sized bed was so comfortable. We were half expecting the house to be a little chilly, considering its great age and the size of the rooms, but the heating was very efficient and there was always plenty of hot water. We lit the log burner every evening and we were very cosy - there is also a plentiful supply of logs. If you are looking for peace and quiet this is an ideal location. Apart from the rooks nest building and visits from Clare's flock of sheep in the orchard there was no other noise. Absolute bliss. This is an exceptional property - the best we've stayed in - and we booked a return visit for the autumn as soon as we were home. Many thanks to the owners for a very special stay.

The house was a beautiful location and we loved it.

However on arrival there was a very strong smell of oil which made everything taste of oil and was very unpleasant for 2 days and probably not good for the health. We couldn't spend time relaxing downstairs and eating was not an option unless we wanted to taste anything other than oil. Ironically I had asked for the aroma sticks to be removed as we have an extremely sensitive sense of smell. Angie Brown was very helpful in getting out an engineer within the evening of the second day of our stay. The smell started to subside after that but it was a while before it disappeared although we could sometimes smell it when we returned after a day out. I appreciate that these things happen but I understand that this had been known about for 2 weeks and yet we still had to get an engineer out who spent at least an hour on it. For such a lovely place this didn't give us a good start. The surroundings were lovely and generally peaceful. We would come again if there was no repeat of the oil leak.
