Situated on the River Teme, in the outstanding countryside of the Welsh Marches, is the historic market town of Ludlow. Ludlow is a wonderful example of a medieval settlement and its ancient street patterns remain almost intact to this day. The town also hosts approximately five hundred listed buildings, making a settlement full of picturesque streets and providing a beautiful backdrop to the regular street markets. Showcasing a range of local goods, these gatherings are held in the shadow of Ludlow’s famous castle and supply items from cheeses and fresh produce to books and local crafts. With a number of Michelin Starred restaurants in the town, as well as numerous tea-shops, pubs and inns, there’s plenty to see and do in the diverse local area.
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was “the quietest place under the sun” and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

" Noise from street below late in the eve but this was advised at the time of booking so expected the noise. Property was very comfortable, clean and very spacious. Lovely touch of fresh bread, milk and scones in the fridge On our arrival . Would definitely recommend if ok with stairs as property is above a shop and has two flights of stairs. All in all Very happy with our stay "
    Mr Little ‐ 1 Apr 2019
" Very comfortable and quite spacious accommodation but being an extremely old building visitors should be aware of steep staircases, one or two low beams and uneven floors. Having said that my wife and myself are nearing seventy and managed o.K. although our knees were aching a little by the end of the week. There is no parking outside except for loading and unloading but there is a car park two minutes walk away beside the library where you can park for a week for ten pounds. Many places to visit in the surrounding area although we left the car on a couple of days and just explored Ludlow. "

" We found the accommodation to be very tired looking, to the point of shabby, the kitchen smelled unpleasant and the property was cold. When we looked inside the information folder to find the instructions for the heating, we found they related to a different boiler and heating control clock. In light of this we did not bring our bags into the property as we had decided we would not be staying. We then followed the guidance notes provided and tried to contact the responsible people. We first tried the caff'e downstairs but found it was closed. We tried the telephone number provided, but it took some hours before we could find a place in Ludlow to get a signal. When we did get through we were only able to leave a message with a summary of the situation and asked that we be called back. We found a good quality room at the Church Inn Ludlow for dinner, bed and breakfast, although we had brought our pre-cooked meals for three days in a cool bag. The following morning we went back to the caff'e and explained the situation. The Manager in the caff'e was very concerned and understanding and then we walked through the property with the cleaner and reviewed the conditions and the cleaner agreed with all the comments we made. The Manager said she felt sure the owner would get in touch with us but we have received no response to either our telephone message left on the first day, or our conversation with the Manager and cleaner the following morning. In conclusion, we have paid for three nights accommodation we were not able to use, as the description provided did not match the accommodation. We are still waiting for a response from the owner and now Cottages. "

" A very enjoyable time with a get you in pack in the fridge. Not least the Christmas decorations and tree. "

" we were very impressed with this great apartment it was better then we expected with plenty of space. it was very comfortable in all aspects of the word. The staff in the adjoining Restaurant was extremely helpful when we approached them This is a apartment i would totally recommend and if we get the chance i will be returning to this very good location. The Owner and the staff she has are all excellent i cannot state this enough. BRILLENT. "

" .It was perfect ! Great location, very clean with great facilities, only wished we had had more time to have stayed in and enjoyed this lovely place. "

" I lived in Ludlow until recently and had to return for work. I thought I knew all of the accomodation available so I was surprised to come across the Bakers Retreat. What a gem! It is beautifully presented with every home comfort and is meticulously clean. This will be my number one place to stay now and I will be back for work and with my family. "

" A wonderful, characterful apartment with everything you need for a relaxing stay! Great shower, well equipped kitchen and a lovely, comfortable lounge. The property has lots of lovely beams and steep stairs as is to be expected in an older property with bags of charm and character. I would highly recommend, and we would definitely stay here again! "
    Mrs Rodgers ‐ 1 Sep 2018
" Lovely apartment right in the centre - instructions for locating the apartment confusing as no mention of tower street being one way and co-op been closed for ages "
    Ms Crawshaw ‐ 1 Sep 2018
" It is spotlessly clean, has everything you need (and more) and the welcome pack provided is beyond generous. We had the pleasure of meeting some of the 'team' behind Baker's Retreat and they couldn't do enough to make our stay a very enjoyable one. We used the WiFi frequently and never had a problem, and the car parking pass was a very welcome bonus. The creaky floors and low beams were charming, and only added to the immense character of this very comfortable property. The stairs are steep as is to be expected in an older, characterful property but all the modern amenities are provided (great shower!) We highly recommend Baker's Retreat and wouldn't hesitate to return. "
    Mrs Standen ‐ 1 Aug 2018
" As other people have mentioned, noise from the street below can be heard clearly in the bathroom and front bedroom, but not in the double bedroom which we used and slept soundly in the comfortable bed. Having said that, as a Grade 2 listed building you can't exactly expect double glazing and the convienience of the location is a worthwhile trade off. The stairs are very steep, so bear that in mind and there are some low beams and door frames. Again, the trade off is the charm and character of a historical building with lots of little nooks and no two walls the same or indeed straight "
    Mrs Rittenhouse ‐ 1 Aug 2018
" We were very unhappy that the Wifi did not work at all as it is one thing we always look for in a rental. It is difficult to get information on possible excursions without wifi anymore. We also keep in touch with our children back in Canada so it caused us some anxiety. In addition, there was no freezer in the fridge and therefore we had to buy ice each day. "
    Mrs Armstrong ‐ 1 Jul 2018
" Good quality furniture in every room - the lounge was very relaxing! Parking permit is great for parking close by. We adore Ludlow as a holiday destination and have stayed with and other companies here before. On this occasion though we shall not return to Bakers Retreat. The description mentions steps - not a problem as my family are all able to cope with steps - but there is no mention of the top floor ceiling height and beams and photos dont really show the problem - my daughter is 6ft tall and had to constantly bend and buckle herself to get from bedroom to bathroom to top of stairs - even my husband at 5ft 10 struggled in places - plenty of ouches through the week!! We also knew there was limited outside space - but the photo of the open air terrace is very misleading. It is not private as you can be seen from the cafe side of the terrace through the gaps in the obscured glass. Ther is no mention of the description of the massive cooking air vent chimney that is on the terrace - be aware in one photo on the website showing the church in the back ground that the central part to the end wall is the chimney!! It switches on about 7.45 in the morning and switches off when the shop underneath shuts. So we could not use the terrace for that time as there are cooking smells....the french door is really a big window too - and could do with a step up as the window is an awkward height. the photograph shows the view from the terrace into the cafe next door - not into the apartment. Lastly the noise outside was too much. I understand day time noise due to location - but delivery vans and bin men seem to start early in Ludlow - 6.30 one morning - and there is noise till past midnight from bars and restaurants. This all sounds negative - and I dont mean it too as we did have a great week - this property just didnt suite our family and many of the problems are beyond the control of the owners of the property. "
    Mrs O'neill ‐ 1 Jul 2018
" This is a great location for anybody who like a good walk about the town and who doesn't mind stairs and low ceilings. The location of this property is on a one-way street without parking outside. On arrival we didn't have the information we needed regarding where to park as the Co-Op carpark was not easy to find (Co-Op had closed), and we found the provided parking permit too late (we'd already parked elsewhere and far away). In saying that, we had a fantastic time. The apartment was well appointed for older children/families and comfortably spacious. Favourite moments included finding my son/husband with heads out the window, peering down on the street looking at the passers by and playing my guitar in the small but private feeling balcony once the children had gone to bed. This is definitely a grade 2 listed house, plenty of angles and squeaky uneven floorboards. Really fun and different. "
    Mr Hayes ‐ 1 Jun 2018
" We enjoyed our stay in Ludlow very much but this is going to be our last visit and we liked the flat very much but as most of the houses are very old they have very steep stairs and my wife and I cannot manage them any more "
    Mrs Gaskell ‐ 1 May 2018
" Only downside a bit noisy at night but it was the beer festival weekend so maybe a bit more lively than usual. Definitely stay again "
    Miss Lewis ‐ 1 Mar 2018
" It was perfectly positioned for exploring the town. The welcome tea and biscuits were appreciated. The kitchen could do with some storage space and an ice box in the fridge. We will stay with Cottages again. "
    Mrs Pieper ‐ 1 Mar 2018
" It was in a perfect location and opposite one of the best restaurants I have been to any ages. It was quite difficult to find though which of course was an issue after a long journey. Ludlow is a lovely town with friendly people. "
    Mrs Isaac ‐ 1 Mar 2018
" Brilliant location near shops and pubs this does mean the property is noisy in the evenings with people walking on the street below. The town is bustling with markets and plenty of choice to eat and drink. The house is very well equipped. It was unclear where to empty bins/ recycle. We used the facilities in the car park only finding the bins in the alley on the last day - it would be useful to add this to the information folder. A wonderful stay! "
    Mr Drummond ‐ 1 Feb 2018
    " café next door. "
    Ms Dalgleish ‐ 1 Dec 2017
" Very warm and comfortable with lovely touches like the warm throws on the sofa and Christmas decorations. Our only gripe was the kitchen - terrible lighting (felt like cooking in the dark), no food cupboards, no ice box in the fridge (first cottage we have ever stayed at where you couldn't have ice with your G and T) , and not equipped for people who like to cook (no scales, rolling pin, whisk, baking tins, hand held mixer etc). "

" We have just spent a wonderful week at this apartment and can honestly say we were very happy we chose this place over other places we looked at. Lovely big lounge equipped with tasteful furnishings, kitchen had everything we needed, we only used the double bedded room with comfiest bed and high quality bedding but the twin bed room was so nice too. Bakers Retreat was full of character and we really didn't want to leave to go home. The cafe below was very nice too having enjoyed breakfast there. We loved Ludlow with its beautiful shops, brilliant market 5 days a week and pubs and restaurants. Lots to do in the area with beautiful countryside and plentiful walks. We would return to Ludlow and look no further than Bakers Retreat . "

" Absolutely superb accommodation. Extremely well equipped. About 1 minutes walk to centre of Ludlow. Loved everything about this spacious place. Really, really great. The discovery of a welcome pack in the fridge was very well received. The shortbreads were delicious. Just a lovely place to stop. "

" Inglenook cottage is a little gem. Tucked away in a quiet location but within an easy walk of the town centre. Well equipped and spotlessly clean it had everything we needed - although a dressing table would be a good addition. Having parking was an added bonus as this is often difficult to find in Ludlow so all in all a great place to stay. "

" We stayed at the bakers retreat for a week in July 2016 - If you are looking for a relaxing break in a place which has modern comforts in a building full of character with oak beams etc then this is the place to be. The best recommendation I can put forward is if we ever visit Shropshire again for a holiday we will look no further than the bakers retreat - Excellent value for money with excellent facilities. With regards the place I would say if you struggle with steep stairs then look elsewhere - We managed easily but an older person would need to take care on the stairs to the bedrooms- the official description does make this clear and you should consider this. The beds were extremely comfy , The temperature was maintained nice and warm throughout our stay , The kitchen is very well fitted out with fan oven gas hob, even a washer and dishwasher ( although we didn't use the last two ourselves) there is no microwave but there are pans available. The living room is fitted out with 2 modern comfy sofas and a large screen TVs with free view Wi if was said to be intermittent as it is shared with the cafe below however I found no problems at any time - The cafe closes around 6pm so the wifi signal is strong in the evening There is a roof top patio great for early evening drinks!. The bathroom looks reasonably new - The shower is great with good pressure and plenty of hot water. if you like a bath the tub is very big and does take a while to fill. The owner provides lot of towels which are very large . The owner welcomed us with a loaf of bread, milk etc in the fridge , fresh flowers on the dining table and the bonus of a parking permit for free parking on the car park nearby ( 3 - 4 mins walk) there is a "budgens" supermarket 50 yards away ( used to be the coop) so no need to bring loads of food with you. A great place to stay - I thoroughly recommend the bakers retreat "
