The boiling blue waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs, which are always 28 degrees Celsius, originally drew the Romans to the town. The Palladian beauty of today's Buxton was conceived and developed during the 18th and 19th centuries, under the patronage of successive Dukes of Devonshire, and includes the majestic semi-circular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens, and The Opera House. Visitors can still enjoy these spectacular buildings and gardens, as well as the complete programme of the Opera House and annual music and arts events. There is excellent walking nearby, with rocky peaks to the north and pleasant hills and dales to the south, and a variety of charming towns and villages such as Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton, and Edale strewn throughout. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both lovely sites within easy driving distance and must be seen while visiting this area. The Peak District is easily accessible from here.
