    About this property

Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Peak District National Park, this property is a haven for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike with beautiful walks from the doorstep.
This fabulous, cosy barn conversion, which has been described as, compact, bijou and perfect as a romantic retreat, can be found 165 yards away from the family run camping site of Upper Hurst Farm, which has been awarded the coveted Environmental Quality Mark Award. Gaia Lodge, a former piggery, nestles in an elevated position that boasts panoramic views of the undulating countryside, dotted with natural hedgerows and dry stone walls; so characteristic of the southern Peak District National Park. The warm gritstone cottage has been renovated with much love, with exposed Douglas fir king post trusses, stone flag flooring and an outside patio and garden area that is fully enclosed with a dry stone wall. It is enhanced further by fully controllable underfloor heating, a wood burner and its own, completely private, additional decked patio area (south west-facing and becoming a little sun trap) with a red cedar, wood-fired hot tub, to provide a truly special stay.
Upper Hurst Farm has a nature-based, ethos, encouraging bio-diversity in fields and hedgerows. In addition, the majority of energy is provided from sustainable sources or solar panels. Resident animals include a pair of alpacas, a free range peacock and four characterful and friendly mini Shetland ponies. There are resident little owls as well as other indigenous owls and buzzards, and peregrine falcons are a common sight. Swallows and curlews return here every spring.
An area popular with walkers, cyclists and nature-lovers alike, the River Dove is just 1 mile away and takes you to Hartington, Dove Dale and Biggin, via Biggin Dale. It is also just 1 mile to the River Manifold and the start of the Manifold Trail. The Tissington Trail is around 3 miles away, and a dog friendly, food serving pub is within walking distance of the cottage, as is the local village stores. The picture-postcard village of Hartington is just 2 miles down the road and the market towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek are all around 20 minutes from the site, providing a wide range of shopping and leisure facilities. The infamous Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall can all be reached in around 30 minutes, as can one of the country’s most popular theme parks, Alton Towers. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

"We stayed for 4 nights in September and it was quiet and relaxing stay and the hot tub was a bonus though the weather could have been kinder. The location of the cottage was central to all the places we visited during our stay. Sue the owner was very helpful and all though next door to the cottage she never was in our way. Would definitely go back again."

    "Excellent accommodation hot tub fantastic."

"THE COTTAGE IS VERY SMART AND THERE IS SOME EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT IN IT. THE BED WAS COMFORTABLE AND MOST EQUIPMENT WORKED. HOWEVER WE COULD NOT WORK THE COOKER AND ALTHOUGH WE FOUND SOME INSTRUCTIONS IT WOULD STIL NOT WORK.THE TELEVISION NEEDE 2 NEW BATTERIES IN THE REMOTE CONTROL FOR IT TO WORK CONSISTENTLY. HOWEVER THE VOLUME SUDDENLY STARTED GOING VERY LOUD ON THE TELEVISION, AND IT HAD TO BE REDUCED ON THE STARTING REMOTE CONTROL.OTHERWISE WE ENJOYED OUR STAY AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT FOR A COUPLE."

"Welcoming, clean, great location ,ideal for a couple and a dog, enjoyed our stay even though weather wasn't great . Nice pub about a mile walk ,with good food . Nice view from cottage .Hot tub lovely and private but would have preferred it with a view . They do have a yurt with hot tub plus's view ."

"Beautiful cottage in a lovely setting. Owner was very obliging and happy to help with any needs. Hot tub set up for us to use. Will go back again."

"Wonderful cottage in beautiful surroundings. Sue is a fantastic host who made us feel extremely welcome. The wood-fired hot-tub is beautiful and the cottage boasts a fully equipped kitchen. Be prepared to bring food as the local shops are somewhat limited (though we managed to rustle up quite a few delights!)Overall, I highly recommend this cottage."

"Very comfortable cottage, everything to hand."

"Our second lovely stay at Gaia Lodge, cosy and comfortable, even during Storm Hannah!"
    Karen ‐ 9 May 2019
"We wanted a quite remote cottage.Clever photography doesn't show the cottage is a foot away from the farmhouse. The private garden is no use if you have dogs, we were told we had to walk them round a field to toilet, what ever the time and weather conditions. Fun in the rain at 2am.If you want to use the hot tub , it involves the farm owner constantly walking around your cottage to light the logs throughout the day, annoying and intrusive. We also had a man fixing a gate who stood at a window staring into the cottage while I was watching the TV. We had to leave all the curtains closed, it certainly wasn't suitable for a romantic get away.Having said that the cottage was lovely, spotless and the owner very nice. The guest book was full of lovely comments, so its probably just us who it didn't suit, but we wouldn't stay again."

"Such a quiet quaint place to stay, everything you could want for your stay was thought of and to a good quality. The bed was very comfortable and the shower lovely and powerful. The underfloor heating was a bonus addition and the log burner toastie. The seclusion with the hot tub was special, just wished they had a portable CD player to have some background music, however we would not mark it down for that as not everybody wants music. We planned walks around the area and Gaia lodge was a great base for this, the pub is about a 20 minute walk and serves good pub food. To wake up each morning and sit outside with your coffee listening to the birds was bliss."
    Pamela ‐ 26 Apr 2019
"The cottage was small and very cosy and comfortable. The hot tub was great."
    Lewis ‐ 23 Apr 2019
"We had an excellent long weekend stay in the lodge which was situated in the heart of the peak district, allowing for great walks and amazing scenery. We had a truly relaxing time, thanks especially to the amazing wood fired hot tub which was great fun. The lodge was warm and cosy with everything we needed, and Sue was extremely friendly and welcoming. We're coming back for the yurt!"
    Emma ‐ 20 Feb 2019
"We had a fabulous stay at Gaia Lodge. The barn has been converted and finished to a very high standard whilst the private hot tub was divine! The fact that it was a traditional wood-fired tub meant that there was no chlorine in the water which made it even better to relax in. The countryside surrounding the cottage was stunning and offered various walks and there was a local pub and tea rooms within walking distance. There were many more amenities in the nearest village which is a very short drive away (or a walk across the fields). At the property, Sue was an excellent host who couldn't do enough to help and answer questions. We would thoroughly recommend Gaia Lodge to anyone."
