    About this property

Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Peak District National Park, this property is a haven for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike with beautiful walks from the doorstep.
This fabulous, cosy barn conversion, which has been described as, compact, bijou and perfect as a romantic retreat, can be found 165 yards away from the family run camping site of Upper Hurst Farm, which has been awarded the coveted Environmental Quality Mark Award. Gaia Lodge, a former piggery, nestles in an elevated position that boasts panoramic views of the undulating countryside, dotted with natural hedgerows and dry stone walls; so characteristic of the southern Peak District National Park. The warm gritstone cottage has been renovated with much love, with exposed Douglas fir king post trusses, stone flag flooring and an outside patio and garden area that is fully enclosed with a dry stone wall. It is enhanced further by fully controllable underfloor heating, a wood burner and its own, completely private, additional decked patio area (south west-facing and becoming a little sun trap) with a red cedar, wood-fired hot tub, to provide a truly special stay.
Upper Hurst Farm has a nature-based, ethos, encouraging bio-diversity in fields and hedgerows. In addition, the majority of energy is provided from sustainable sources or solar panels. Resident animals include a pair of alpacas, a free range peacock and four characterful and friendly mini Shetland ponies. There are resident little owls as well as other indigenous owls and buzzards, and peregrine falcons are a common sight. Swallows and curlews return here every spring.
An area popular with walkers, cyclists and nature-lovers alike, the River Dove is just 1 mile away and takes you to Hartington, Dove Dale and Biggin, via Biggin Dale. It is also just 1 mile to the River Manifold and the start of the Manifold Trail. The Tissington Trail is around 3 miles away, and a dog friendly, food serving pub is within walking distance of the cottage, as is the local village stores. The picture-postcard village of Hartington is just 2 miles down the road and the market towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek are all around 20 minutes from the site, providing a wide range of shopping and leisure facilities. The infamous Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall can all be reached in around 30 minutes, as can one of the country’s most popular theme parks, Alton Towers. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

"Brilliant stay the lodge is beautiful and location is perfect for exploring and a fantastic pub within walking distance"
    Ian ‐ 29 Sep 2018
"Very good and built to an excellent standard. Most enjoyable stay. Thank you"
    Diana ‐ 25 Sep 2018
"Wonderful cottage, can't wait to return!"
    Alice ‐ 23 Sep 2018
"A quiet location and very pretty views. The hot tub took quite a while to warm up as you have to use wooden logs as the heat source. The WiFi was not working for the duration of our stay which was disappointing -mainly because we stayed with our 1 year old son so were in every evening. We would stay again just as a couple but wouldn’t stay again as a family as it’s a bit small to go with a child."

"Fabulous place to stay. Lovely views of surrounding countryside from the cottage and Shetland ponies as neighbours. Location is ideal for exploring the many delights of the Peak District with walks direct from the cottage. We were looked after very well by our host and will be recommending Gaia Lodge to our friends and family."

"A superb and very clean cottage for two, close to NCR's548 & 549 and the Manifold Valley for great walks and cycle rides. Sue was a very helpful owner who left us to get on with our holiday and gave recommendations for meals out that turned out to be great eating places. The hot tub was very nice, the only down side being the time that has to be put into getting it up to temperature berore it can be used. From the farm thwere are also a great number of walks to be enjoyed and one we found good to do was along the River Dovey which was reached by walking 2 miles form the Gaia lodge."
    Craig ‐ 27 Aug 2018
"A beautifully renovated lodge set in a fantastic location. The warmth of the private wood fired hot tub made every evening that extra bit relaxing. An enclosed garden area makes it safe and secure for the welcomed dogs joining you on your holiday and the added touch of dog treats and a little food further adds to Sue's element of love and enjoyment of renting the lodge out."

    Paul ‐ 23 Jun 2018
"This is a peaceful location, with easy walks to two dales. The owner, Sue, is a lovely and welcoming host with great local knowledge. The lodge is well appointed, comfortable and very eco friendly. The hot tub is a great bonus to an alteady lovely place to base a break in the peak district from. The views are stunning and the lodge captures a lot of sun. We will be going again and encourage couples to consider this lodge."
