"Lovely period stone cottage in a great place for exploring Dartmoor. Owners very welcoming and friendly. The only downside was the intermittent broadband service. Great stay overall and will stay again in the future."

"Devon is Devon so nothing startling there. The Smithy is convenient for West Devon and Cornwall, and Plymouth, not so convenient for Exeter area. The Smithy suffers from being near a main road, OK during the day but one bedroom has to have window closed at night. Parking might be a problem if the other buildings were occupied, we got lucky. The owner was away whilst we were there so we were unable to get one of the showers fixed which was in need of some maintenance. Otherwise all went well."

"Sarah the owner was very welcoming, unfortunately the photos on the website are a bit deceiving as to the proximity of other buildings . The Smithy is situated between two very busy roads and could do with some tlc.Overall it's ideally situated for visiting attractions but very little privacy if you aren't renting both cottages"

"The Smithy is a beautiful stone cottage, wonderfully cool in the scorching weather we had. We had a very warm welcome from Sarah and family, who welcomed our two Cavaliers also. The cottage was equipped with everything we could possibly need, all in excellent working order! Every comfort was provided. We enjoyed eating in the lovely garden, well stocked with exotic plants. It was so handy to be able to exercise our dogs in the nearby meadow. There are several large food stores in Tavistock, where we could get fuel also. There are plenty of interesting places to visit in the area, Cotehele, Mount Edgecumbe, Siblyback Lake, Cawsands, Coleton Fishacre and many more. We had delicious cream teas at The Kitchen in Tavistock and visited the Panier Market there."

"The bed and furniture were too hard for my liking but would suit someone else. This was the cleanest property I've stayed in for some time and the owners were helpful and informative, without being intrusive. I'd have preferred one good sized bathroom instead of two small on-suites, but again, that's my preference. The downstairs was very dark which suited me but might not someone else. The property is perfectly situated within easy range of many attractions Devon has to offer. It is a bit of a squeeze to get a car through the gate but I found the right angle on second attempt. To sum it all up, if you don't mind a hard bed and small on-suite then I think you'd be hard pushed to do better than this property."

"The cottage is surrounded by rather busy and noisy roads on either sides. Lounge is good but the upstairs bathrooms are rather sad."

"We loved the location, the cottage was lovely and had everything we needed. We have stayed in lots of Welcome Holiday cottages and this was one of the best. We loved the garden and we're lucky enough to have good weather and spent lots of time in it. Would love to go back."
    Christine
"Best holiday location. My dog loved the cottage it's surrounding's and Sarah's dogs"

"We enjoyed our holiday at the smithy very much. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Sarah who had thoughtfully provided milk, tea etc but also lovely bottle of wine and flowers and other surprises. The smithy is on the borders of devon and Cornwall and we visited many beautiful places. We would defiantly come again"

"Fantastic holiday home. Very comfortable with everything you could possibly need, spotlessly clean. Lovely location to travel round Devon and Cornwall. The owner Sarah was the perfect landlady, very friendly and helpful there if we needed any thing but gave us total privacy. This is the best cottage we have stayed in and we will be going back. I can't recommend enough."

"We chose The Smithy as The base for our honeymoon ( accompanied by my stepson, so it was very much a short family holiday). We were delighted to find a card from Sarah congratulating us on our wedding, accompanied by a bottle of bubbly. While I understand these little touches were exceptional because it was our honeymoon, the fresh flowers were clearly a standard part of the way the cottage was prepared. It was a superb cottage, warm, homely and despite standing right next to the main house, very private. A very nicely set out kitchen and sitting room along with two bedrooms, both with en suite which were a delight. The cottage was perfectly clean and in exceptionally good order. Sarah, who owns the three cottages in the grounds was extremely personable and showed just the right level of friendliness and interest to make us feel like a welcome and valued guests without being over enthusiastic. All in all, a superb holiday and very good value for money which we would recommend to anyone"

"We had a wonderful Christmas spent at the Smithy. Our host Sarah was friendly and very helpful. When we stepped into the cottage we immediately felt at home to spend our Christmas there. Lovely comfortable couches, open fire, who could ask for more. There was limited phone reception and no WiFi, but i really liked that, nice to get away from everything!. Thank you Sarah we had a lovely time."

    "great location"

"Kitchen full equipped. No wifi. No phone signal. Parking is in a layby outside the property grounds. Shower rooms could do with some tlc/polish to the finish. Fuel for wood burner was plank offcuts and not logs, plus no window in wood burner - it is a very quirky/odd wood heating device. Living area quite dark but lots of lights, it's a quirky olde worlde living area with loads of character and features. Comfortable and practical. Very warm, loads of hot water, hot water flow upstairs very poor. Electric showers in both ensuites. Comfy bed, slept well. Couldn't find laundry, an information book would've been helpful! Owner friendly and helpful. Shared garden well appointed. Small paddock for dogs and feral kids to run around in."

"Superb, we had a great holiday and this place is charming, everything you need and your hosts are a fantastic friendly family always on hand with some great advice on days out. Nothing to much trouble."

"We didn't have the best of weather but we were able to get out and visit all the places we wanted to, and then have the comfort of the cottage to come back to."

"Amazing cottage for the price advertised. Lovely owners, highly recommended for a getaway to Cornwall!"

"We were a party of 5 (6 month baby, parents and grandparents) we had a wonderful relaxing holiday. Location good for Coast and Dartmoor etc, cosy cottage, good grounds, generous welcome pack, well serviced with Tv, white goods etc. Sarah was very helpful and welcoming. Only criticism is that while two shower rooms was very useful one was rather cramped. Other than that it was definitely a good find."
    Sue
"Had a fabulous stay at this gorgeous cottage, it was a real home from home with the owner having thought of everything we could possibly need plus more - fresh flowers, milk and eggs in the fridge, welcome basket of coffee, tea and sugar. Very welcoming and friendly, we would thoroughly recommend The Smithy and will certainly be going back. Location would have got a 10 if there had been a pub within walking distance, but less than 10 minutes to Tavistock in the car and very central for lots of places. Loved it."
    Margaret
"It's unfortunate but the place is in need of a bit of tlc and a tidy up outside. I was surprised to see it was awarded Gold Status earlier this year."
    Naomi
"We had a wonderful week there. Everything that we needed was there for us."
    Patrick
"Trading up from B&Bs of yesteryear it's got strengths; trading down the bathrooms are definitely on the wrong side of history. The Smithy - one (perhaps smallest and least well done) of three rentals created from the outbuildings of the main house "The Watering Hole" with shared gardens and some caravans in a nearby field. Positives: lovely helpful tenant manageress/ owner? Good locale - Morwellham, Tamar Trails bikes tree surfing etc. and between the two moors. Ground floor - large living and well equipped Kitchen - well executed for the budget end of the rental market - TV (no wifi or mobile reception).Characterful stone, clean modern kitchen and wood burning stove. Well equipped and thoughtfully stocked.Negatives: Wedged between two quite noisy roads. Problem of outdated unvented shoddily maintained bathrooms - reminiscent of old style 70s B&Bs and with the pervasive smells and feel of damp the wrong side of the line for me."

"Had a great stay this week. Cottage lovely and had everything we needed. Land lady friendly and as a nice touch, she had left eggs from her free range eggs in the fridge for our arrival. Great that we could take the dog, there was lovely walking locally. Only issue was the macerating toilet which made sudden loud noises, startling us in the middle of the night."

"A beautiful stone built property in a garden adjoining the main house with two other cottages facing across the garden. Owners very welcoming, helpful and informative about the history of the property and area. Beautiful vase of flowers to welcome us together with a welcome pack of essentials. Everything included, bedding, towels etc. Will definitely visit again. Oct 2012."

"Our second visit to this cottage. Love it! The area is outstanding for walking (we have 2 dogs), cream teas, good pubs etc. The owners are lovely people, friendly and helpful. We had a welcome pack on arrival (with their own free range eggs) and a beautiful vase of flowers on the table. Would definitely recommend this cottage. April 2012."

"The Smithy was lovely. I would recommend that it be quickly heated on the day of guests arrival as it was cold and took a while to warm up. Once warm, however, it was fine. Both bedrooms needed a mirror near a plug for us fussy ladies with hairdryers etc. April 2010."
