What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mrs Jennifer Earis - Verified booking

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Shaldon, which is a lovely village which we are so pleased to have discovered and will certainly be going back. We stayed with our 2 year old and 11 month old and the village is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday with children owing to the excellent beaches, shops, cafes, walks and low volume of traffic owing to the narrow streets in the centre of the village (this might change in school holidays). Compass Cottage was a superb base for our stay, its position on the Village Green is idyllic and a stone's throw from everything you need. We parked in the Ness Car Park (it was very busy everywhere else when we arrived on a sunny Saturday) and then didn't need our car for the rest of our time in Shaldon, everything is easily walkable from the cottage. Particular recommendations from us close to the cottage are Clipper Cafe, the London Inn (also on the Green) and the bakers and butcher on the main street. The tiny Beauty Hut is also lovely for someone wanted a massage / manicure treat but it's so popular that I'd phone to book before arriving in Shaldon. The cottage itself met our needs perfectly, it's well laid out, fully equipped, tastefully decorated and felt like a home from home. We returned home from Shaldon feeling like we'd genuinely had an enjoyable holiday and proper break (not always the case with two small children!) and wouldn't hesitate to return, both to Shaldon and to Compass Cottage.

This accommodation is all about location .

.... absolutely stunning! We were lucky with the weather but, even on a dull day, the huge windows overlooking the estuary would still provide fabulous views over to Teignmouth. You really don’t need a car so, make use of the garage and walk (if you can) over to Teignmouth or around Shaldon or to Ness Cove. Yes; parking is really difficult but if you have a medium sized car then the garage is great and it’s a 5 minute walk back to the house. We drive a Suzuki SX4 S-Cross and we got this in the garage, no problem. You’re a 5 minute walk, on the flat, from everything you need in Shaldon; the gorgeous bakery, butcher and village shop plus post office and pharmacy. We also ate at the Clipper Cafe twice; great breakfasts and, again, that beautiful view! Ness Cove is lovely but, yes, it is an uphill walk and then down some steps steps to the beach. It’s worth it though as you go through the ‘smugglers tunnel’ The house is lovely and has everything you need for a really comfortable stay. Large fridge and freezer and a dishwasher. You’ll sleep well in the comfy beds after a day out in the sunshine, exploring. Liz (the caretaker) was really helpful when we rang to sort out our arrival time and keys. I would highly recommend this place and we’ll definitely be back.

This is a lovely little property tucked away by the back beach.

Nestled between two pubs, you’d think it would be noisy but it’s not. The court yard can be a sun trap but watch out for the seagulls… Things were a little dusty and a slight feeling of damp on arrival but this was soon addressed. We did note that there were no recycle bins available. The neighbour told us that despite the owners best efforts they keep being taken. Might be worth storing them in the back? A guide might help for things like bin days (Wednesday). Parking within Teignbridge car parks has increased to £40 a week and it increases in April. It is also not valid for on street parking which is run by the county council. This is something to be aware of. Ring Go operate the parking meters. The back beach is lovely and the sea is a lot calmer, it is also where dogs can go, so if you’re not a fan beware. Finally, beware of seagulls, they can be aggressive and they are not adverse to stealing your food whilst it’s travel to your mouth. They love ice cream, sandwiches and chips. Luckily we were not caught out but saw this going on.

As a returning guest to Quayside.

I think the improvements are brilliant. A fairly decent sized tv and wifi. I would 100% recommend this property to anyone. The new front door is beautiful, however, a blind or net curtain would make the cottage feel a bit more private, particularly when it gets dark. This is constructive NOT criticism, but the seating could be more accommodating, The cottage has sleeping for 4 people. however, if there were 4 adults then the current seating would be ridiculous. Perhaps consider an L shaped sofa? A food caddy would be very helpful - all the neighbours have one. A few more bits of info would also be helpful - there were instructions for the kettle and toaster but not the washing machine! We had a lovely time at the cottage and would like to say a big thank you to the lady/man in charge of change over for doing a brilliant job on check in day. This is a nice cottage in a stunning location - Book It!

Beautiful property in a stunning location.

Comfortable, well equipped and very clean. Modern, with sufficient space for 5 of us, the snug was perfect for our girls to relax and watch TV. Excellent service from Nicki the caretaker, good contact from Sykes about instructions, etc. My only minor criticism is the lack of proper wardrobes and drawers in the master bedroom, they are very flimsy and not really in keeping with the quality of furnishings in the rest of the house. Yes, parking is a challenge - however the property is worth it. It's a lovely walk on the front to the public car park, but quite a hill. We managed to park around the steeets sometimes, which was better. Perfect village setting, 50 steps away from London Inn, with its fab food and Prosecco on the village green opposite! Fab staycation, loved it - we'll be back!
