What our customers say about their holidays

    • Roisin - Verified booking

We could not fault 3 Coastguard Station at all.

It is a welcoming homely property that had every amenity required. It has been a thoughtfully restored historic building that just feels fab and truly cared for by the owners. The location of the house could not be more perfect, we loved the convenience of ditching the car and being able to walk to local restaurants and the pub is just a few doors down! We adore the beach so having it literally on your doorstep is both practically and visually amazing, great for our sea dips too! The window seat in the cottage is my favourite spot, the beach and sea view was simply stunning. We have been regular visitors to Rathmullan for 14 years and when our usual holiday home was sold last year we were so sad because we didn’t think we would find another to match it. Lucky for us we feel we hit the jackpot with 3 Coastguard Station and look forward to returning again soon. Separately, we would like to commend the property owner on being responsive to our queries before and during our stay. It took Sykes 2 days to respond to our initial query and by that time we had already arrived at the property. They then took another 2 days to fully answer by which time we had checked out of the property. We are lodging a separate complaint around Sykes customer services which should absolutely have no reflection on the property or owners. We paid a high rate for the property via Sykes and would expect they have high standards of customer service to match, sadly that was not our experience. It was our first time using Sykes and we would be reluctant to use them again in the future. It would be such a shame if Sykes shoddy customer service damaged business for the property, the owner's don’t deserve that because the property is excellent.

      Wonderful holiday, thank you Henry!

The property is a thoughtfully renovated, comfortable and well equipped traditional Irish cottage, the kitchen being one of the best I've encountered. The cottage is beautifully located on the shores of Lough Melvin while a beautiful glade of trees beside the cottage provided much needed shade during the recent heatwave! There's lots to see and do in the locality though we also enjoyed swimming in the lake at nearby Derrynaseer ( an excellent alternative to crowded beaches as is nearby Garrison) cycling and walking the quiet roads, edged with lush hedgerows! It's clear that Henry takes Covid precautions very seriously which was reassuring. There were generous touches too like new toiletries and kitchen basics - and not so basics, wine and nice crisps! Although there's no mobile coverage inside the cottage, it's available a few 100 metres up the road - fine by us and promoted a sense of getting away from it all. Communication with Henry was easy at all times. We certainly plan to return - highly recommended!

As other reviewers have noted, there are several negatives with this property.

We had to clean the place from top to bottom; remove blood-stained bedding; and remove some slugs from the walls. We opened all the windows for a couple of hours to try and diminish the aroma of damp coming from behind the kitchen sink. To connect to the wi-fi we had to (under the owner's directions) climb up on to the kitchen cabinets and switch it on from the router's eccentric placement above the cooker. We were given the wrong wi-fi password by the owners. Their contact information was also incorrect. Further eccentricity was provided by the placement of a dusty, fake Christmas tree in the sitting room (in June). The carpet in the downstairs bedroom is filthy. Neither of the extractor fans in the bathrooms work. The mirror light in the downstairs bathroom doesn't work. The 'pop up' plugs in both bathrooms are broken. In the kitchen, the state of the oven is a disgrace. This property is tired and shabby. It is in urgent need of modernisation and a deep clean.

      A very spacious dwelling.

However some points that let it down: particularly post covid I would expect, as a minimum, mattress and pillow protectors on the beds. Our mattress was filthy and blood stained and the bed linen was not as clean as it should have been and the bed throw was dirty and tatty . There was no hot water in either the hand basins or the kitchen sink with no instructions how to remedy that. The TV was disconnected. The whole place would benefit from snagging especially in areas where excess grout has not been removed and poor finish in places etc. No indication of where to dispose of rubbish. There were large bins at the back but none of the keys we had unlocked them. The plumbing has very little water pressure and as a minimum I think the toilet flushes need improving. The kitchen is missing a couple of essentials eg teaspoons and chopping board and some of the pans need replacing. It is a shame the above points mar what is otherwise a very comfy accommodation.

This cottage was a wonderful surprise, and Bernie, the owner was very accommodating.

We had a fridge full of anything we could need on our first night/morning - an Irish breakfast, milk, wine and a fire lit! - The cottage was steeped in history and a wonderful throw back to traditional Irish living - this was a very relaxing week and we were close enough to Dungarvan to access all entertainment and fabulous restaurants we needed - it was also prefect for our dogs with its big garden which is enclosed and safe. I would highly recommend this cottage and host. If its a couple's escape you are seeking - then step back in time to Carthy's cottage and enjoy every moment it provides. We got out and about every day and discovered many coves/beaches and towns within 20 miles all worth a visit - Lismore, Stradbally, Dungarvan - the trip to Dunmore East and Passage East is beautiful - the Copper Coast drive is also a wonderful way to spend the day. A most memorable week.

    Frequent questions

    • What is the best month to visit Ireland?

The best month to visit Ireland depends on personal preferences and interests. The summer months of June, July, and August generally offer pleasant weather, longer daylight hours, and a vibrant atmosphere. However, spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) can also be excellent times to visit, with fewer crowds, beautiful landscapes, and opportunities to experience local festivals and cultural events.

    • How many days in Ireland is enough?

The number of days needed to explore Ireland depends on the depth of experience desired. A minimum of 5-7 days is often recommended to cover the highlights of popular destinations like Dublin, the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, and Galway. However, to fully immerse in Ireland's diverse landscapes, historic sites, and vibrant culture, extending the trip to 10-14 days or more allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the country.

    • Where should I go in Ireland for the first time?

For a first-time visit to Ireland, starting in Dublin, the vibrant capital city, is a great choice. Explore its historic sites, such as Trinity College and Dublin Castle, and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere. From there, consider visiting popular destinations like the scenic Ring of Kerry, the majestic Cliffs of Moher, and the charming city of Galway, which showcase Ireland's stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

    • What is the most walkable town in Ireland?

Galway is often regarded as one of the most walkable towns in Ireland. The compact city center allows for easy exploration on foot, with its pedestrian-friendly streets, lively atmosphere, and numerous attractions within close proximity. Strolling through the colorful streets of Galway allows visitors to discover charming shops, pubs, restaurants, and historical landmarks such as the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square.
