What our customers say about their holidays

    • Elaine - Verified booking

My family used to have caravans in Southerness for 20+ years in the Lighthouse Leisure site so spent my childhood there every weekend and holidays, lots of happy memories, but when my dad became terminal gave van up so hadn't been back for 20 years.

I was shocked at how close the vans are in all the sites now, far too close. After being housebound for 3 years after breaking my back and covid lockdown living alone I really needed to get back out into the world but my confidence took a humdinger of a battering so I thought go back to Southerness but I wanted a peace and quiet too so not in a caravan in a busy noisy site so thought a private cottage and came across Sykes where I chose Wigwam because I knew the family had good taste because they've got 2 of the same pictures I have lol The Sykes internet booking experience I admit I had trouble with trying to pay for it because the part that sends you to your bank site to acknowledge you're paying they send you a code to type in then continue on to finalise but instead kept taking me back to start of booking process and after 6 times I gave up but unfortunately staff aren't allowed to take over the phone payments so had to wait until I was on another device for it to go through. The Wigwam itself is an amazing place with beautiful decor throughout every bit reminding you that you are on holiday by the sea. The views overlooking the beach from the 'a little sand between your toes takes away your woes' bedroom (sure as heck does btw) and the single bedroom and the whole of the living room windows look out onto the beach and the 2nd double bedroom even although overlooking the back of the site complex it was still quiet. Wigwam has all mod cons kitchen, dining area and living area, bedrooms and bathroom which admittedly I was a bit worried about with my mobility issues walk with crutches, have a wetroom and seat at home, but I still managed in and out of bath holding on to sink and towel rails. Overall an exceptional home, holiday which brought back plenty of happy memories and aye a wee bit teary bits too from start on the bus going turning into the Southerness road knowing all the times we went down 'the tickly hill' (kind of big dipper tickly tummy feeling like you get on the big dipper when dad put foot down on that bit for 20 years lol) but first time dad not there. I'll definitely be back.

We loved the cottage and its remote situation.

The directions were clear and after a long journey travelling over two days from Southern England this was much appreciated! The whole place was clean and tidy - I hope we left it as we found it. We also appreciated the little welcome pack of basics - the scones especially! We loved the village and the walk to the harbour - we had a meal at the pub one evening with our family who live nearby and sat outside watching the sun go down - lovely! The walk to the headland is beautiful and allowed our dog a bit of "off lead" time. They had seen dolphins out in the bay the previous week so we were very disappointed not to make a sighting and teased them that they had "bigged up" the place too much!! In fact we had a wonderful holiday - the local villages were nice, we visited two botanical gardens on the peninsula. And the weather was perfect too. It was just sad that we had to cut our stay short because of commitments at home. We intend to return to visit my cousin again and would stay in the cottage another time if its available. Thank you

Beautiful remote location if you want to unwind.

However the cottage is very dated and in need of some modernisation and a deep clean. When we arrived there was no key in the safe as promised so after driving over 200 miles we had to phone the owner and wait for the cleaner to bring the keys. After sitting on the drive for an hour we eventually had access to the property which was cold as the heating had been switched off found several unacceptable issues including dirty bedding ( paw prints and dog hairs on pillows and bedding). Dog poo on the garden, overturned garden furniture, mucky streaks on patio doors, cobwebs hanging in lounge, sofa spring broke, black mould on shower curtain and in cupboards, drawers in wardrobe that could not be opened and conservatory furniture in desperate need of a deep clean. It would appear issues have been raised or logged by previous guests but not acted upon. First time we have ever been disappointed with a Sykes cottage holiday.

We had a lovely holiday in your beautiful cottage.

Very cosy, with comfortable beds, the cottage was lovely & warm. Thank you for the thoughtful supplies you left, much appreciated. We noted the message about the wobbly loo seat & shelf & set about putting them right. We found the missing shelf pin & put it back in place. The loo seat was secured with metal fixings purchased in Kirkcudbright, until your repair can be done. Very effective! Unfortunately we did have a little accident with one of the tall glasses falling off the draining board on our last morning. Very sorry about this, it'll teach us to congratulate ourselves too early on successfully completed the week with no damage! We purchased some tablespoons to add to your supply of cutlery as a gift, it was a little difficult to serve things out with the smaller ones. That being our only complaint. All in all we had a perfect week & would recommend your cottage to everyone

One of the most comfortable cottages we have stayed in.

The kitchen was huge and well equipped, the living room was cosy and comfortable (the leather couches were lovely), the beds were extremely comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. The garden was a haven in the sun with a book and a cup of coffee, listening to the birds. We liked the fact that the cottage stood alone and that there was super parking. The games room was an added bonus. All in all, it was an excellent base for a week’s chill out. If I had one observation, it would be that putting a hairdryer into the cottage would be a plus. I never take my own, to cut down on packing but normally the property has one. Hetland Hall hotel, a few minutes walk, serves lovely food as does Caulder’s Garden Centre, which is a few minutes walk in the other direction.
