What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mrs Webb - Verified booking

Santa Monica is a quirky, yet charming property. It has direct access to the dunes and beach by a steep path at the back of the cottage but if you are able, the view of the beach is worth the scramble. If you don't feel up to that there is access very close by via a boardwalk. The property is on one level and has been imaginatively designed. The king-size bed is comfortable, great for a good night's rest after being out all day. The great hall has two comfortable sofas and although darker than the rest of the property the owner has created pools of light using lamps, uplights and down lightning, which makes the room feel cosy. The Wi-Fi was good but 'phone reception can be intermittent, which wasn't a problem for us. The dining area has French doors opening onto the garden and a lovely seating area wrapped around a large wooden table. Again, there are pools of lighting making a cosy feel in the evening, plus lots of natural light in the daytime via a light tunnel and the portholes. The bathroom has a glass ceiling so you can soak and look at the star in the claw footed bathtub. The shower between the bathroom and kitchen also has a glass ceiling for more daydreaming. There is plenty of hot water, the cottage is warm and has great green credentials. The kitchen is in keeping with the Boho beach life vibe, it is well equipped with views of the marram grasses and dunes. There is a large verandah which would be great in the summer evenings as it faces the sunset. We visited in February and did manage to sit outside for a morning in the sunshine. There is also an outside kitchen area for alfresco evenings. The village is a ten minute walk away with a café, bistro, pub and amusements. The Rock Beach Bistro serves wonderful food, is dog friendly and you feel very welcome. The beach is dog friendly all year around, although there is a restricted area near the lifeboat station in high season. Sea Palling is a small but lovely village close to Stalham where there is a medium sized supermarket, plus independent stores. The Swan Inn at Stalham serves good food and is dog friendly. Santa Monica is close to Horsey Gap where you can see seals and is also on the edge of the broads. The Nelsons Head at Horsey is worth a visit, good ales and home cooked food, dogs are also welcome here. If you are looking for a chilled holiday in a place with character Santa Monica will give you that. We were very sad to leave as Santa Monica was a little haven next to a little slice of heaven.

We all love Santa Monica and Norfolk. Our second stay - our dog just loves the beach. We would love to know some of the stories behind the artefacts here - in particular pictures in the new dining extension (which is great!). Wiveton Hall (Normal for Norfolk) is a long journey but if you are heading up the coast it is worth a visit (between Cley and Blakeney). The cafe is excellent, serves good food at reasonable prices - the shop, fruit farm and gardens are also terrific - all dog friendly. The Nelson, at Horsey, is a homely and very dog friendly. It serves generous portions of food at good prices and an amazing choice of beers and ciders. We have holidayed in Norfolk for many years- been to several places and seen the tourist attractions. It's good to come back to such a private and peaceful place - we aim to come back again.

Santa Monica is a lovely quiet location, right on the beach at sea palling. The steep incline to the back leads on to the dunes and then the open dog friendly beach. There is an easier route to the beach a little way along the lane you need to be quite fit and agile to get up and down from the cottage. We went in October, so it was quiet. The garden to the front is enclosed, but you would need to keep your eyes on inquisitive dogs as there are ways to get out to adjacent properties. The place is quirky and quite lovely The bed is very comfortable. There is no light pollution, which makes for exceptional night skies when it's clear. All in all a good place for a relaxing break.

Santa Monica is very deceptively large and spacious and is a real revelation when you explore. The decor is different but somehow fits really well with the furnishings and fittings. The antique bathroom fittings were lovely. The dining are was surprisingly spacious and bright with the French windows. The proximity to the beach was great, although we only managed the dune steps access behind the cottage once, there were ample purpose built ramps and steps within 50 yards to access the wonderful beach. Would love to return. Amenities close by were P.O and store. Pub, Bistro, Fish and chip shop and a cafe. Many places of interest within reasonable driving reach.

So lucky with the weather - able to have breakfast outside on several mornings. Wonderful cottage - love the decor and interesting artefacts. The dogs loved the beach and we found everywhere to be dog friendly so it made everything easy. Perfect place to relax and recharge the batteries. Thank you - I would recommend to everyone but would also like to keep Santa Monica a secret! PS - The Greyhound, at Hickling, is great - good food, service and very dog friendly!
