" If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and spend some quality time with friends or family, here is a great place to go! This is a lovely large country house that quickly feels like home, whilst at the same time making you feel like you’re staying in a luxury hotel. I’m guessing this has been achieved by the owner being a Bidlake, and the house having 750 years of his family history. My partner and I joined 5 other couples to celebrate a ‘big birthday’. The large double bedrooms all have an en suite bathroom - with a fabulous high pressure hot shower helping to wash away the cobwebs from previous nights’ celebrations. Our bed was extremely comfortable, and being in the countryside the only noise came from cows lowing and birds singing. There are lots of rooms to enable your group to either do their own thing or get together - including two well equipped lovely country kitchens, two dining rooms, a games room, a music room, and a great lounge with a lovely open fire (with plenty of logs to keep it going). There are also landings with sofas and chairs and a chess board table. Outside, there are grounds to wander around, with what were once stables, barns, and a stream. Signs of days gone by include a Mounting Post, that would have been used originally to help the ladies get on their horses. The Magnolias were starting to bloom around the doors, adding some glorious colour. Given its size and location we were able to enjoy a fabulous dinner party, that the birthday boy’s lovely wife put together, followed by plenty of singing and dancing - there is a Sonos system with speakers in several rooms. You need to bring your own food and drink, and be prepared to all join in on making a success of your weekend, or longer - a week would be great at any time of the year. With 12 of you it makes the cost very reasonable indeed. Everywhere was beautifully clean, helped by having a large cloakroom to hang coats and leave walking boots. There are lovely wooden floors mainly downstairs, with some light carpets, so we all wore socks & slippers around the house. There are plenty of places locally to explore. We went to Tavistock for a Saturday afternoon explore around the indoor market, and the excellent Clovelly Inn at Bratton Clovelly for Sunday lunch (also highly recommended). My only small recommendation would be a more visible sign outside - we managed to drive past when we first arrived: if Little Bidlake Farm is on your right, it’s about 200/300 yards after it, on the same side. If LBF is on your left, you’ve missed it! Highly recommended. A super house (that needs respecting, of course), which is ideal for groups of friends or family. Oh, and there’s a ghost to look out for too ....... "

"The house we stayed in was superb and exceeded our expectations. The ground floor was huge, with plenty of space in the living room area and a dining table for 12. Add in the pool table, which was well used by all the males in particular, a kitchen dinner with 2 ovens and additional seating and not forgetting what we call the cinema room and everyone is happy!! There were games, dvds and books to keep you active or relaxed. Upstairs we had 5 bedrooms with 3 ensuite plus one additional bathroom near the 2 bedrooms which had no bathroom. We all coped fine and my room had a bath and shower so the 2 babies bathed in my room when required. In the rear of the house was a big grass garden with plenty of space but you had to keep an eye on the youngsters because there were some steep slopes. The nearest place for shopping was Okehampton, 5 miles away which had a Coop, Waitrose and Lidl on the same retail park. Dingles Vintage Fun fair which was 15 miles away, was a good day out where the rides were no more than £1.50. We went to Exmouth beach which was 45 minutes away which was lovely and Exeter, 15 miles away which was good for retail therapy plus sight seeing. One thing to be aware of: in the info folder the rubbish and recycling is collected on a Thursday but when I checked with a neighbour he said it was Tuesday so we missed putting it out!! Overall a fantastic holiday and I have no hesitation in recommending it."

" I booked Great Bidlake Manor to celebrate a significant birthday. My wife and I were joined by five other couples and the house proved to be a superb venue for relaxing and celebrations. The facilities are second to none - my wife did the catering in the well appointed kitchen and all twelve of us were able to sit comfortably at the beautiful period dining table in the large dining hall. All six bedrooms are wonderfully decorated and furnished with extra king sized beds and on-suite bathrooms. Plenty of fiction and non fiction books in the library together with local maps and guides. There are open fires in the lounge and dining hall which we lit and the underfloor heating keeps the whole house nice and warm. The boys enjoyed the games room with the pool table, dartboard and games console. Outside the extensive grounds are great for a pre-diner stroll and in the summer the large patio area would be great for drinks and eating al-fresco. Okehampton, Tavistock and Launceston are only a few miles away and worth a visit and Exeter is about half an hour away straight down the A30. In conclusion I would thoroughly recommend Great Bidlake Manor to anyone seeking a luxurious break on the edge of Dartmoor "

" Some notes for your information. There was some concern about the amount of flies in the property, indeed many dead ones on floors when we arrived. Sofas were a little uncomfortable, especially for older members of group to get up from, as they were very low down. The security light outside kitchen patio door seemed a little unreliable. However, the house was brilliantly resourced, especially for the preparation of Christmas dinner. It was clean (with the exception of dead flies), welcoming, and has excellent secure garden for dog to be able to run around and play. Very. useful boot room and utility space, and the den was especially popular with younger element of the party. The property was heated well throughout the break. I would definitely recommend this to friends, and many thanks for such a brilliant service throughout from Helpful Holifdays staff. Also a thank you to owners for ensuring the property was decorated so nicely for Christmas, and the card and biscuits were a lovely touch. "
