What our customers say about their holidays

    • Holly - Verified booking

The Hayloft was perfect for a relaxing getaway.

Really attentive hosts, we arrived to find milk, bread, and cake left for us which was incredibly thoughtful. We spent every evening in the hot tub, just enjoying the peace. Some of the towels left for us were stained which was disappointing, but overall the cleanliness was good, and the bedroom is so gorgeous. The pub across the road is so friendly, with an unexpectedly large vegetarian menu. I spent all week drinking whinberry gin, so lovely! We took our dogs for beautiful walks right on the doorstep, no need to drive anywhere. Such a lovely area. We fully utilised having the shop across the road, and again were pleasantly surprised at how well stocked it was and the variety of products. We were, however, quite shocked to walk in one day to hear a conversation between a shopkeeper and some locals that was transphobic and quite homophobic. It was made even worse when they tried to include us in this derogatory conversation. Though this has nothing to do with the holiday property, it may be worth noting if you're planning a stay. Again, this is of no fault to the hosts; we loved staying at the Hayloft and were sad for our holiday to end. We had such a great time

Not happy at all with this property.

Central heating was abysmal, was constantly switching off due to the boiler switch being flicked overnight. This occurred every night we stayed. I specifically requested the hot tub area to be prepared for use upon arrival, hot tub was prepared but there was no garden light whatsoever so hot tub was rendered useless at night time. No TV in the bedroom, had to borrow the TV from the living room. Toilet seat was cracked, and bathroom was too cold to use at times due to the central heating issue. I booked my stay for 7 nights, but cut it short to just 4 nights because of the terrible experience - requested a full refund from the owner but that was denied - was only compensated less than half of what I originally paid for the booking (even though the property owner constantly had to come and sort out the heating issue) so was not happy at all about the experience overall. I will never be booking here again, and I would never recommend anybody to stay here (unless you like living in a fridge-freezer). Horrible, horrible experience. 0/10.

Perfect holiday retreat for a large 3 generation family comprising of 6 adults and 5 children aged from 19 months to 10 years.

Iona and Dan were fabulous hosts, very friendly and informative. The area is set within a farming community with a couple of local public houses. The children loved seeing the cows in the fields, opposite the barn. Parking is great we had 3 vehicles but there was room for more. One thing to be aware of is that the roads in the immediate vicinity are typical narrow country roads but once you are clear there are main roads with access to Shrewsbury, Ludlow and historic towns such as Ironbridge with its numerous museums, Bliss Hill a 'restored' 1900 village is well worth a visit. As a family, we holiday for a week every year and everyone agreed that this was the best location/property yet and there were a few tears when the time came to leave. We'd love to spend Christmas there but unfortunately they're booked for the next two years, still there is 2025...

Beautiful barn with yoga studio downstairs .

Magnificent country views. Log wood burner , reclining settees and large dining table so we could all sit together at mealtimes . Uncluttered property with lots of good basics like towels , hairdryers , washing up liquid, coffee etc. There are 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms with options for a bath or walk in shower . The beds were especially comfortable ( and large) and outside there is a nice seating area that catches the sun. Well placed for country walks and a couple of nice country pubs . Just a short drive to Shrewsbury. We had a really wonderful time with great communication from the owner Iona who has clearly put a lot o.f thought into the conversion of this barn .. Perfect for large families or groups of friends wanting a relaxing getaway . Table tennis and games available for the kids . Thoroughly recommend and hope to return .

We have been going away at Easter for 10 years now (3 generations - five adults, and four children aged 10 - 12) and Black Lion Barn Retreat is by far the best cottage we have ever stayed in.

It is huge, beautiful and spotlessly clean! The open plan lounge/dining area/kitchen is brilliant - perfect for chatting, relaxing, cooking, playing games and enjoying the gorgeous view from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The games room downstairs was absolutely perfect for the four children with: table tennis, table football, bean bags, a tv and a few other foam games/activities - exactly what the children wanted after a day out exploring the local area. There are loads of local attractions to keep you busy as well as National Trust places and very local walks. Iona was a perfect host - emailing in advance as well as during our stay and also leaving a welcome gift for when we arrived. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough.
