Enjoy a break by the sea with Plymouth holiday cottages

Discover stunning sea views and cosmopolitan living when you escape to the historic city of Plymouth. The attractive port city in South Devon is jam-packed with attractions, spectacular beaches, pretty cobbled streets, and a rich maritime history.

From the outstanding beauty of Plymouth Hoe and the brilliant National Marine Aquarium to the idyllic old port and learning about the pilgrims, you'll never be short of things to do in Plymouth.

To see everything the city has to offer in comfort and style, stay in one of our beautiful Plymouth holiday cottages. Our hand-picked selection features cute cabins overlooking the water, ancient stone cottages brimming with character, and everything in between.

Whether you're looking for a cottage for a cosy weekend break, or a spacious property for a longer staycation, at Snaptrip, we'll help you find your perfect holiday pad.

Why choose a Plymouth weekend break or staycation?

Located on the south coast of Devon, Plymouth is a vibrant city with a fascinating history. Home to England's biggest naval bases and seaports, Plymouth is renowned for its role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, its links to the Napoleonic Wars, and Darwin's sailing around the world.

Its naval base is commemorated at the Mayflower Steps, where the pilgrims are thought to have set sail across the Atlantic for the New World. While the steps no longer exist, the site where the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower is marked with both Union Jack and Stars and Stripes.

From this point, you can join the Mayflower Trail, which transports you back in time to 1620, discovering what Plymouth's Barbican area was like in the 17th century.

To discover more about Plymouth's past, head to The Box, a cultural destination spread across three buildings. You'll find a museum, art gallery, and exhibition spaces. The Museum and Art Gallery focuses on the city's relationship with the sea, historic voyages that began in Plymouth, and natural history specimens.

Plymouth Hoe, also known as the Hoe, is the centre of the city, nestled high above the harbour, this must-see park offers incredible views of the city and its surrounding areas. As you make your way around the park, you'll discover the Armada Monument and the Naval War Memorial. If you fancy cooling down, take a dip in the Tinside Lido, a beautiful Art Deco outdoor swimming pool.

The city's waterfront is spectacular. It's been given the title of Britain's Ocean City, and there are so many opportunities to get out on the water. Try your hand at sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or scuba diving, or just enjoy a gentle paddle in the sparkling sea.

Plymouth is also home to the UK's largest aquarium. National Marine Aquarium boasts over 4,000 creatures, from the inhabitants of the Plymouth Sound to the tropical waters of Australia.

There are countless events and festivals held in Plymouth throughout the year, so no matter when you come, you'll always find something on. From the Ocean Festival and Pirates Weekend to Flavour Fest and the Seafood Carnival, Plymouth is a city filled with fantastic events to get stuck into.

For a great night out, head to Royal William Yard, a Grade 1 listed ex-naval victualling yard. This beautiful spot hosts a variety of popular restaurants, al-fresco dining spots, bars, pop-up shops, galleries, and excellent events.

With so much to see and do in Plymouth, you'll only wish your trip could last longer.

Find your dream Plymouth holiday rental

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Anne - Verified booking

'Timbers' is primarily memorable for its spectacular views.

We were so lucky to have 'Indian Summer' weather during our stay and the watery panorama seen from three of the bedroom windows and from the wooden benches on the wide terrace, delighted and entertained us all. From early morning mists to bright sunshine, we think the Yealm Estuary is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Having our own quay for the week was great. We hired a double kayak from Trioceansurf in Kingsbridge (01548 854676). They provided a soft roof rack, buoyancy aids and seats for £25 a day. One of us also brought an inflatable dingy so we spent plenty of time messing about on the water. The house is well equipped although the bathrooms and kitchen could do with a 'sparkle'. There are three bathrooms but only one has a proper shower. With six of us we had to organise a rota system. We are all used to having a quick shower in the morning and baths are normally saved for a long soak in the winter. The fridge is much too small for a group of 6+ people. There is a freezer in the utility but that doesn't really help with day-to-day food that needs to be kept chilled. The Aga does make the kitchen uncomfortably hot at times but we opened the windows and that was fine. It was useful to have a drying rack there to allow damp things to dry overnight. We ate at The Ship twice and had takeaway fish and chips from The Dolphin one night - all delicious. Sausages and pasties from the butcher on NF high street were wonderful. The weather was so hot that I went in search of a sun lounger but was not able to find one. We all have very happy memories of our glorious stay. The views from Timbers must be the best in Newton Ferrers!

We really enjoyed our stay and the kids loved the pools and the space they had to play hide and seek.

The facilities were ok, made use of the washing machines, kitchen was fully equipped but wasn't big enough for the amount of people during our stay but we made it work. Some of the beds were uncomfortable and no showers on the 3rd floor was a bit of a problem but we just used some of the other spare rooms. The house is in need of some repair especially the kitchen and bathrooms ie new shower curtains wouldn't of gone a miss. The amount of space this property has is brilliant for everyone including the dogs. The maintenance guy was very friendly and came when needed to clean the outdoor pool. The roads to and from the house are poor to say the least with pot holes and narrow roads but that is Devon and Cornwall. Bit out of the way of the local beaches and pubs as you can't walk to them as the roads are to narrow so you have to use your car if you need to go out. But all in all we all had all,26 of us ,had a fab time and the kids did not want to leave.

I would highly recommend this property.

We were given a warm welcome by the owners John and Shelagh and shown round the property and provided with many tips for trips out and local pubs and restaurants. A nice touch was the milk, bread, butter and homemade marmalade which was well received after our long journey from Yorkshire. It was also a bonus having private parking at the rear of the property. The property is very well situated for the Hoe, the Barbican and the City Centre all that can be easily walked to. There was a lot to keep us occupied in Plymouth as first time visitors and I would recommend downloading the Plymouth Trails App onto your mobile phone to help you find your way around. It is also a good base to travel over the border into Cornwall which we did on a couple of occasions to visit Looe and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Although we did have a nice week at eventide it was adequate for our stay there were a few things which would’ve made the stay more enjoyable.

Overall it was clean and the bathroom was nice. The cooking facilities were very difficult to understand with very limited instructions to anything. In fact we gave up with oven and hob after just about understanding the microwave! The tv was quite an issue as only internet viewing unless you down loaded apps! Made watching very difficult. And on a wet February week we felt some tv was needed. The hot water also In the kitchen and bathroom sink stopped working half way through week too. And the beds had to be the hardest I’ve ever slept on! But maybe some people like them like that. Definitely if yiu are tall or not very mobile you will find this place challenging. And the key to the front door was bent too. This place could be so much nicer with just a bit more thought to some small things.

We had a really lovely week’s stay in Timbers while our son in law was in Derriford.

The place was literally home from home, complete with an Aga, and airer over it to dry our damp clothes after a day out. Having the river just below, we loved to watch the tide come and go, and spot the boats and kayaks quietly making their way up and down. The little path below the house connects everything, and our grandchildren loved to go on errands to the Coop just a few minutes from the house. They also loved wallowing in the mud when the tide was low, but it was nothing the house couldn’t cope with! The house itself was warm and cosy, and just a lovely home to come back to each time we went out. Going to sleep listening to owls hooting, and waking to the soft splash of rowers going up the river made our days complete. At a difficult time in our lives, thank you Timbers.
