Enjoy a break by the sea with Plymouth holiday cottages

Discover stunning sea views and cosmopolitan living when you escape to the historic city of Plymouth. The attractive port city in South Devon is jam-packed with attractions, spectacular beaches, pretty cobbled streets, and a rich maritime history.

From the outstanding beauty of Plymouth Hoe and the brilliant National Marine Aquarium to the idyllic old port and learning about the pilgrims, you'll never be short of things to do in Plymouth.

To see everything the city has to offer in comfort and style, stay in one of our beautiful Plymouth holiday cottages. Our hand-picked selection features cute cabins overlooking the water, ancient stone cottages brimming with character, and everything in between.

Whether you're looking for a cottage for a cosy weekend break, or a spacious property for a longer staycation, at Snaptrip, we'll help you find your perfect holiday pad.

Why choose a Plymouth weekend break or staycation?

Located on the south coast of Devon, Plymouth is a vibrant city with a fascinating history. Home to England's biggest naval bases and seaports, Plymouth is renowned for its role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, its links to the Napoleonic Wars, and Darwin's sailing around the world.

Its naval base is commemorated at the Mayflower Steps, where the pilgrims are thought to have set sail across the Atlantic for the New World. While the steps no longer exist, the site where the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower is marked with both Union Jack and Stars and Stripes.

From this point, you can join the Mayflower Trail, which transports you back in time to 1620, discovering what Plymouth's Barbican area was like in the 17th century.

To discover more about Plymouth's past, head to The Box, a cultural destination spread across three buildings. You'll find a museum, art gallery, and exhibition spaces. The Museum and Art Gallery focuses on the city's relationship with the sea, historic voyages that began in Plymouth, and natural history specimens.

Plymouth Hoe, also known as the Hoe, is the centre of the city, nestled high above the harbour, this must-see park offers incredible views of the city and its surrounding areas. As you make your way around the park, you'll discover the Armada Monument and the Naval War Memorial. If you fancy cooling down, take a dip in the Tinside Lido, a beautiful Art Deco outdoor swimming pool.

The city's waterfront is spectacular. It's been given the title of Britain's Ocean City, and there are so many opportunities to get out on the water. Try your hand at sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or scuba diving, or just enjoy a gentle paddle in the sparkling sea.

Plymouth is also home to the UK's largest aquarium. National Marine Aquarium boasts over 4,000 creatures, from the inhabitants of the Plymouth Sound to the tropical waters of Australia.

There are countless events and festivals held in Plymouth throughout the year, so no matter when you come, you'll always find something on. From the Ocean Festival and Pirates Weekend to Flavour Fest and the Seafood Carnival, Plymouth is a city filled with fantastic events to get stuck into.

For a great night out, head to Royal William Yard, a Grade 1 listed ex-naval victualling yard. This beautiful spot hosts a variety of popular restaurants, al-fresco dining spots, bars, pop-up shops, galleries, and excellent events.

With so much to see and do in Plymouth, you'll only wish your trip could last longer.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Michele - Verified booking

      Lovely clean cottage.

Wendy who contacted us was at the end of the phone if we needed anything but all was good. The extra fridge in the outhouse was v useful. The pub next door was welcoming for those nights when you just wanted a drink and a meal made for you, menu limited but food good. The landlady was v friendly and welcoming. Noise levels weren't an issue but there again the cottage is next to the pub so you would expect noise at some times. The Clovelly Arms is a must for food, walkable to but do book. They open at 6pm we arrived at 6 for our booking and it filled up v quickly. Staff and food great. Plymbridge Woods a great walk for the pooches. Burrator reservoir also great for dogs. Royal William Yard in Plymouth was a nice place for brunch. In fact lots to do. The cottage is in a good location for walking, woods on your doorstep turn left at the pub up the short hill and you're there. Jennycliffe was close as well. The garden had a lovely view of the lake, as others have mentioned perhaps a couple of chairs would be nice outside rather than the benches, makes for more comfort for an evening in the sun. We've had a super break and the weather being mixed didn't affect our enjoyment at all. l

The cottage is a real "home from home".

Everything you need is where you think it will be. The accommodation is immaculate and beautifully decorated, but really comfortable too. If you love peace and quiet this property is wonderful. The views from the seating areas are spectacular, all the way to Dartmoor on a clear day, but always rolling countryside. We watched the harvesting and bailing over the week whilst having dinner. Bring your telescope for star gazing at night. It's very quiet but really close to a wonderful beach at Mothescombe with reasonable all day parking. You can walk the south coast path from the cottage. It's easy to get back to A379 for travelling further afield across South Hamms and into Plymouth and Cornwall beyond. Take heed of the directions from A379 though and come through Battisborough Cross as some of the other lanes SATNAVs like are very narrow and used by the tractors quite a lot. It would test your reversing skills! Just book it, you won't be disappointed.

      Absolutely wonderful cottage.

Very homely and comfortable with lovely views over the surrounding fields. The owner kindly provided a welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits and a pint of milk in the fridge so we could have a cuppa before we'd even unpacked. The cottage was EXCEPTIONALLY clean. The double bed was so comfortable we actually came home and ordered a new mattress the same. We took my disabled father with his stroller and the cottage was perfect for him once inside but beware the rather steep slope to the door. The location was beautiful, very peaceful and quiet. It is a bit off the beaten track (for us part of the attraction) but you do have to drive down some rather narrow Devon lanes to get there. Would I recommend this cottage? Absolutely. Would we stay again? Without hesitation. 5 stars.

    • Ann - Verified booking

      Lovely owners - very polite.

Very clean and tidy. The cottage is in a very rural surrounding. The slope leading down to the front door of the cottage needs a hand rail. Inside the cottage we would recommend that the owners purchase a nest of tables for coffee cups etc.....In the double bedroom a chair would be handy. Shower could do with a caddy lower down for shorter people to place bottles etc. The lanes around the cottage are rather narrow and it took a good ten minutes or so to get to the nearest village. The nearest supermarket was approximately 30 minutes away back up on the Devon Express way. The villages have little convenience stores but not enough to supply for a weeks shopping. Overall if you want a relaxing holiday without going out or seeing people the cottage is perfect.

We are 3 sisters and a friend and have just spent an amazing week at Timbers.

The house is a home not a holiday house. Everything you could need or did not know you needed was there. I cooked on an Aga which was something I always wanted to try. The local area had some great walks but just sitting in the garden watching the boats on the river was something you would never get bored of. We can highly recommend The Dolphin Inn which also does take aways. You can reach the The Swan Inn over the causeway when the tide is out just be careful to keep an eye on the tide coming back in. They do jugs of Pimms, a great risotto and delicious ice cream. We are definitely booking again next year as there are still so many things to see and do in the area. Thanks for sharing you wonderful home with us Sue, Claire, Lynne, and Ann.
