What our customers say about their holidays

    • Catherine - Verified booking

This is the worse place that I've ever stayed.

I had such an awful, uncomfortable time and I came away from the property ill. The electric storage heaters don't give off enough heat. I guess they expect you to use the gas heater (not advertised), which we were forced to do, however, I have asthma so after just 2 uses of the fire, I had the start of an irritation on my chest that developed into a chest infection. Also, the fire is temperamental. It's not fun trying to light a faulty gas fire. There are no instructions in the property. We had to google to find out how to use the grill on the oven. There were no games, just jigsaw puzzles. The DVD's are just thrillers...? I notice that in May 2023 they had feedback about a faulty shower yet they have clearly done nothing about it as the shower is either boiling hot or freezing cold. The bed was so uncomfortable that I really didn't sleep. My husband slept a little but he found the bed very small. The place was very dirty. I find it a bit cheeky that they request £20 per dog when they don't clean anything. There were so many cobwebs, surfaces were dusty, stains on the sofa, the knobs on the cooker were dirty, there was a lot of dirt behind the sofa when we pulled it out, the bin was dirty and there was a stain on the mattress protector!! I was not made aware before travel of opening hours of the hosting house so we had no access to cooked breakfast, cream tea etc. Combined with the cold, chest irritation and lack of sleep; I became so ill by the third day that I cried my eyes out and wanted to go home. We had to stay because it was Christmas and because we had paid so much money. I tried to have a bath but being a larger lady, I couldn't because they have a bath that becomes narrow for some reason!! They couldn't just have a standard bath for us fatties! We also felt extremely uncomfortable to say anything to the owners with it being the time of year. To top it off, they were closed way after opening on the day we were leaving when we were trying to get hold of them to pay the outstanding money owed.

The location of the property was very good but unfortunately the cottage neither looked like the photos on the Sykes site, as well as not living up to the standards claimed.

We arrived to a property that due to a serious fire on the main house, had a lot of scaffolding up next door, which did affect the cottage. On a practical side we were affected by the noise of the white scaffolding sheeting each night when the wind was blowing! During the day there were regular comings and goings by tradespeople, as well as drilling etc which all made it difficult to relax when trying to in the sunshine! The outside furniture was of a very poor state with no cushions offered (again very different to the photos on the site). Cleanliness and standard of the property was poor. We were kept awake at night by the many mice/rats running around in the loft. Outside the bathroom the sewerage was coming up when the toilet was flushed, leaving a very unpleasant smell. We went out and ate out a lot more due to the many issues in the cottage. We hardly saw the owners and were very aware that they have a lot on sorting their home out after this major fire. However in hindsight it might have been better to not let the cottage during this period. Although through choice we arrived a day late, we also left a day early as new beds are required in this property as well as sorting the mice/sewerage and cleanliness out. We have photos of all of the above (except the mice) which do not want to attach to this but I am happy to forward at any time. We look forward to receiving a speedy and satisfactory response. The owner was very welcoming and helpful , it gave an air of assurance in these stressful "getting back to normal" times.

The cottage is cosy and comfortable in a beautiful location, with lovely views over a valley. We spent happy times over a coffee watching the amazing bird life (and saw birds of prey high up over the hills). The weather wasn't good to us during our stay but the accommodation was a welcoming place to come back to. We agree with a previous reviewer's comments , that if you are used to a firmer mattress , you notice a difference, but that is a minor point. Overall a lovely , welcoming place to retreat to for a break and an excellent base for visiting and exploring the surrounding area.

We arrived at the cider loft & liked the look & location of it , but on closer inspection the general cleanliness & maintaince of the property were lacking ( the microwave & oven both had a lot of dried food stuck inside ) ( kettle was brown) (cutlery drawer had crumbs inside it ) (bathroom sink plug chain broken ) (needs slip mat for bath for when showering )(heaters wouldn’t work apart from one in bedroom , admittedly there was a portable gas fire ) (bottom oven did not work ) we did run out of gas ( in this amazing summer weather) but Craig did replace the following morning

We had a lovely stay at Sutton Barn.

The owners were friendly and approachable but not intrusive. The barn was clean and very comfortable with the best equipped kitchen we’d ever had.Scaffolding on the main barn meant we didn’t have full access to the patio area but this wasn’t an issue as we had the run of the beautiful garden which the dogs enjoyed. The area was lovely with lots of good dog walks in the Forest of Dean and along the river Wye. We were able to get a supermarket delivery to the barn which was very convenient for us. If you like a rural retreat I can recommend Sutton Barn.
