What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rhona McMichael - Verified booking

Despite being very freshly painted outside, inside is a different matter. The cottage is damp, wallpaper coming off wall and ceiling in double bedroom, carpets threadbare, the 3-seater settee broken, the place was dirty and I had to start cleaning the kitchen before I could use it. The windows don’t look to have been cleaned for months inside or out & the amount of flies going about gives the game away. I left the cottage 2 days after I arrived with bites all up the back of my legs, the last straw. I advised Discover Scotland I was going to get stronger antihistamines and wouldn’t be returning but wanted to complain about the state of the place and was asked to send a detailed email & photos of my bitten legs to which I did weeks ago and they have been giving me one excuse after another since, the site managed was off last week & they needed to talk to them before they could progress my complaint, well we are now Wednesday the following week and again I’ve heard from no-one. I wouldn’t recommend shelduck cottage OR Discover Scotland, they were happy to take my money but have done nothing to help get me any of it back, £575 wasted on a filthy place that they say they check regularly? That furniture hasn’t been cleaned in years & there’s no padding left in the table seat cushions & they haven’t been painted in years either, absolutely disgusting, I left without taking photos of the property as by the time I’d been bitten I’d had enough & just wanted to get more antihistamines & go home. Entry was 4pm Sat and I left just after 9 on the Monday not having one walk as the Sunday rained heavily, the cottage was the only place I could have got the bites and Discover Scotland have avoided me since, terrible customer service, and now I also note all the recent reviews don’t have names, just ‘trusted customer’. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone

The proximity to the beach and local amenities is great, as is the quiet location away from road noise.

Garden is a great size and was great for our dog and child. The playhouse and slide was a hit. The conservatory helps provide a really good amount of space, though the dining room being at the opposite end of the house to the kitchen is awkward. Massive TV isn't anchored and is a hazard for kids. Bedrooms are a good size, though so much space is wasted in the master by the oversized and awkward bedframe. A normal bedframe would've meant we had room for our baby's travel cot but it just wouldn't fit. Bed clothes were too big and meant you got tangled in them. Duvets in kids room were far too heavy for use. Shower is small if you have to squeeze in with a child. Plenty of towels, though no spare bedding which would've been sensible to provide. Request for this was ignored. Kitchen was under equipped, no welcome pack of information about recycling, appliances etc., uncomfortable sofa and over soft mattresses (as in springs can be felt) on all beds, as men.tioned in other reviews. Decor is in need of a refresh throughout. Enquired in advance of our stay about a travel cot and highchair for our baby and had a reply to say they'd be provided. Cot was there on arrival (included a pillow and duvet totally unsafe to use) but highchair wasn't. Messaged the owner who said someone would come to get it out of the garage. 2 days later, no one had and a follow up message to the owner went entirely unanswered. Could be so much better with some thought about guest needs and investment. Seemed over rated by Sykes and overpriced. Disappointing. Wouldn't return

Visited 21st - 28th September 2024. We loved our stay in Shelduck Cottage, having previously stayed in the cottage next door we knew what to expect but it was lovely to see the refurbishments to the property ie new bathroom and decoration throughout. The weather was kind so we could enjoy lots of time outdoors and great walks along the beach from both the reserve and local areas. Dumfries, Castle Douglas, Gatehouse of Fleet all within an easy drive. We visited Threave Castle and Gardens, the Camera Obscura and Dumfries Museum, visited the Ruthwell Cross an 8th centruy Anglo-Saxon cross, sat in the sunshine at Carsethorn and ate our picnic, bought beautiful fresh fish from Fleet Fish the mobile fish van. The kitchen was very well equipped a problem with the light was quickly sorted. We were warm, there was space for boots and coats. All in all a very comfortable stay.

We had such a wonderful time.

The location of our cottage was perfect. It provided a combination of peace and tranquillity alongside easy access to beautiful scenery. The locals we met, whilst dog walking, were friendly and engaging. The cottage itself was well equipped and had everything you could need, with a sunny garden. The bathroom offered a choice of a walk-in shower and a bath which was ideal, and the water pressure was great. The 2 bedrooms were both spacious and well equipped with coat hangers and a hairdryer. There was a roller blind as well as curtains in the bedrooms which gave us the option of darkening the rooms for a good nights sleep. The main bedroom could have easily accommodated a king size or even a super king sized bed, which would have been an added bonus, as we found the double bed was small and too firm (just our personal preference). All in all a great place to stay.

It was lovely to get a welcome message from Iain and Donna.

I can see why the property would have received good reviews but it is now in need of the paintwork being freshened and a really good deep clean to get it back up to scratch. The back garden is beautiful and the conservatory is a great addition. Although it was nice to receive a bottle of Prosecco on arrival, some milk, bread and butter would have been a much better welcome (especially as we arrived late due to awful traffic) luckily the small shop by the huge caravan park was still open otherwise we'd have been very hungry! We found the sofa and bed too soft for us but that is probably personal taste. The cottage is perfectly placed for beautiful beach walks and there are some wonderful places to visit nearby. We did have a fantastic holiday here so would recommend it. It now just needs a little money spending on it!
