What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mike Clark - Verified booking

West Gorton My wife and I have been to this property 3 times before with our dogs and we enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the wonderful views. This time we found the property refurbished with a lovely new shower on the ground floor. The floors had also been refurbished – laminate flooring downstairs and new carpets upstairs. New double glazing in the two dormer windows and the bathroom window downstairs. All in all, there was a real improvement in the place. After settling in on our arrival, we tried to turn the heating on as it was quite cold, but it wouldn’t come on. Instead, we lit the open fire which was lovely. The hot water was intermittent – it came on and went off quickly with the result we had cold showers on the first two days of our holiday. We didn’t worry too much as we were warm with the open fire. The Sunday was quite cold for the time of year and again we tried the central heating and water, but it was the same problem. We called the owner who was excellent and she came up immediately and tried to sort the problem. In the end she got the plumber to come up early on the Monday morning. The problem was simply a lack of pressure in the system and was sorted there and then for which we were most grateful. From this point on there were no further issues with the hot water or central heating. We had a fabulous week at West Gorton weather-wise and we enjoyed our holiday there yet again. The rear garden was lovely to sit out in with the picnic table. The entire perimeter is well fenced and safe for our two Golden Retrievers to be let out. On previous visits, the picnic table was at the front of the cottage enjoying the views of the Cairngorms. A few comments though if we may? Despite the major refurbishment, there were a few minor comments we should like to make. My wife is a truly excellent cook and we do like to have the best of both worlds by eating in and at the same time going out to local restaurants. The cooker at West Gorton is extremely old and, in our opinion, badly needs replacing – a solid hob and would be very expensive to run in this day and age and the cost of a new induction hob would almost be recovered in energy savings in just one year. The temperature markings for the oven are totally obliterated with all the cleaning and wear and tear over the years and it was impossible to work out what the real temperature of the oven actually was and so was hit and miss with the cooking. Likewise with all the solid hob rings were old and difficult to control again with no markings to tell you which hob was on and it was trial and error to find out which ring was actually on or not as the case may be. They take ages to heat up and cool down for cleaning purposes and are exceptionally difficult to control. The toilet seats also need attention – the one upstairs has only one out of four “buffers” which prevent the lower lid coming into direct contact with the porcelain bowl of the WC and in the case of the toilet downstairs, the lower lid won’t stay upon its own. Two very simple items to fix, but important ones in our opinion. My wife and I stay in a large number of dog friendly cottages all over the UK and feel that we do have many comparisons from which to draw and base our opinions. Most cottage lets have a very comprehensive notes and instructions on the running of the premises including the heating etc which we didn’t get at West Gorton. Although there are the very basic guidance notes left pinned to a notice board, there are no detailed instructions regarding the heating controls etc which is a pity. The Wi-Fi which is done through a dongle is very expensive and not very practical in this day and age. There are very few cottage lets now which don’t supply free Wi-Fi and although there is a very good 4G signal at West Gorton, the Wi-Fi is a very important issue in this day and age – even on holiday when one is finding out information about the surrounding area! Despite what would appear to be a few negative comments, we did have a lovely holiday and as you can see from the number of times we have been here, we do love it!

Vielen herzlichen Dank!

Property not as described on web site, especially the back garden.

Lots of noise and smells from garage from as early as 7am. Garden decking area and hot tub which had the lid screwed down and obviously hasn’t been in operation for a number of years. No sail to protect from sun- missing. Table and chairs seen better days. All this looks lovely on web site but in reality is a complete disaster. Game Room/ Garage an absolute disgrace as it hasn’t been cleaned for a number of years, dust and cobwebs everywhere. Sliding patio on to decking area are absolutely disgusting as the bottom rail which the door slides on is absolutely covered in dirt and debris. The top of fridge freezer was absolutely covered in dust and had not been cleaned in some time. Top of curtain poles were so dirty when we ran hands over the top of them, they were black with dirt and dust. The shower areas in the house all need to be ripped out and replaced due to shower door falling off the bottom runner a number of times during our stay which would be an H&S issue if it landed on your feet. Regarding shower trays and skirting boards next to them they are covered in mould. One of the tiles on floor of small bathroom has a hole in it this could be another H&S issue if you caught your toe in it. We know procedure to contact the maintenance team but felt they had not carried out what was needed before our stay. We have photographic evidence of all the above unfortunately these can not be posted on website. We will forward the photos to the Sykes website. We payed £1500 for our one week stay due to the condition of this property it is only worth £700. Please don’t waste your hard earned money on this property as you will be sadly disappointed.

The house on paper was exactly what we were looking for unfortunately it came up well short.

Positives: Location in the Cairngorms is excellent, bedrooms comfortable and was nice to sleep in in-between the trucks going past. Good on-suites to the bedrooms, showers are nice and powerful. Negatives: The road noise outside it dreadful, trucks and cars go past the house morning, noon and night, one after another with the combination of the railway only slightly further on its not a peaceful night sleep. Aviemore has two access roads to the A9 anyone going north goes past the house. Downstairs each room only has a single ceiling light which has a Edison bulb with copper shade, it may look nice but its very dark and the light emitted is very orange. To do any cooking at night you have to move the 2 LED lounge lamps in the kitchen so you can see what you are doing. The carpet was not attached to its carpet runner at the top of the stairs and it slipped as I going down the stairs and I landed on my backside; not a great start to the holiday! The house was cold when we arrived, manually turning the heating on in the garage brought the boiler to life but no heat. Each room has its own thermostat we turned these up high and still no heat. In the end despite travelling 550 miles to get there we decided to go and get some fire wood and matches for the lounge wood burner as none is provided. This helped but is also broke. The air closer vent to slow the burning down doesn't seem to do anything so we get a roaring fire going very quickly but it burns through the wood within minutes. In the end we decided to leave early, very disappointing.

Once at the cottage you feel as if you are miles from anywhere, but in fact you are not really too far from the shops and pubs in the local town. Each morning we awoke to the dawn chorus or the bleat of lambs uninterrupted by the noise of traffic. We could have stayed all day watching woodpeckers, mistle and song thrushes, wagtails and other birds but not too far from the cottage there were pine forests on the edge of beaches and nature reserves with rivers running through them which we wanted to explore. The cottage was the perfect base for exploring the Cairngorms. It was comfortable and adequately equipped for four people with plenty of games and books for entertainment if the weather was bad. Fortunately for our stay we had beautiful weather and although a couple of evenings were a bit chilly, the cottage had heating and an open fire with logs provided (although we did not use the latter as it was not that cold). There was a picnic table outside which we used on a few occasions, either for breakfast or an evening meal watching the sun set over the mountains. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
