Staying in Gloucestershire

And each part manages to retain an individual romance, along with a heap of sights and activities to explore. If you love nature, Gloucestershire is your haven with pretty streams and flower-filled valleys never too far away. If you’re a fan of all things witchcraft and wizardry, it’s also home to Gloucester Cathedral where parts of Harry Potter were filmed.

"I admit we booked it in a hurry and didn't read previous reviews. If we had we wouldn't have booked it. There's no shower, no WIFI, and, although the cottage was originally no doubt lovely (15 or 20 yrs ago) it is now tired and dated. The bathroom in particular is damp with peeling wallpaper and mould. The towels provided smelt musty and wouldn't dry in there! The owners are an elderly couple who, we suspect, haven't actually been in it for ages and aren't supervising the contract cleaners because it was barely clean, They're are clearly 'doing the middles but not the edges'. The kitchen cupboards and drawer were full of crumbs and the kitchen rug was filthy. Some of the crockery was chipped or cracked and though there were lots of cooking pans many were way past it. Although a few basic foodstuffs such as tea, coffee, cooking oil, salt and pepper were provided some were past their expiry date, the oldest being the pepper, 2007. As an indication of it being unloved or cared for, whilst there were a few current local attraction leaflets the oldest one we found in the pile was 2002 !! It needs a thorough refurbishment and deep clean."

"The plus points come from a lovely setting and real peace and tranquillity, dark skies at night for stargazing and a river running through the property. S16083 is tacked on the end of a converted Cotswold stone mill of some age. The downside is the standard of maintenance in the Lodge. To be blunt, the broken bed should be taken out and burnt as a health risk. We had to go straight out and buy a deodoriser, fresh pillows, duvet, mattress protector etc. as those provided stank of stale sweat and mould. Even so, it was impossible to get a decent night's sleep on this narrow and flimsy structure, as other reviewers have remarked. Towels were damp and showed signs of not being freshly laundered and came in vile shades of olive. The décor is eccentric but dated rather than vintage and the years have taken their toll and left it scruffy. I could not in all conscience recommend this property in its current state and urge the owners to get professional advice for a major refurbishment ."

"S16083 is a little gem in the beautiful Cotswolds. It's a very cosy place with a wonderful "home from home" feeling and lovely interior decoration. Being placed at a little river, it is very relaxing to sit on the outside terrace and listen to the soothing noise of the flowing water and all the sounds of nature around you. There are several hiking trails near the cottage, so you can just put on your walking shoes and start discovering the beautiful countryside. The charming small Cotswolds town of Bourton-on-the-water is also in walking distance. S16083 gives you every opportunity to have a really relaxing holiday and is also a good starting point for exloring the many places of interest in the northern Cotswolds or for a trip to Oxford or Cheltenham."

"A lovely cottage in an equally lovely location: walking around the nearby lake was a real treat and the eating places in the village (the Italian restaurant and the pub) were of a high standard, serving quality food with excellent service. Fairford is handy for Kelmscott Manor, which we visited one afternoon and where we enjoyed a traditional high tea in the sunshine, and the whole surrounding area was delightful. Linda, the landlady, was very friendly and helpful, and we wouldn't hesitate to repeat the whole experience. Our only (slight) criticism is that the cottage is very small: we didn't find that a problem but families might; we thought it added to the cosiness. Generally, a big 'yes' and a definite recommendation!"

"We stayed at Cotswold View for a weekend. The accommodation is a few rooms above the owner's garage, but is ideally located for Stratford upon Avon, Cheltenham & Gloucester and the main Cotswold villages. The photos have been very well taken as the kitchen and bathroom (that aren't pictured) are small and could maybe do with some modernisation. The heating system is electric wall heaters but the owners have also supplied separate fan heaters for an extra boost of heat if needed. The 2 z-beds for children are a little fragile according to the owner and have to be put downstairs in the lobby at the back of the owners garage (again not pictured). The property is easy enough to find on the outskirts of Willersey village."
